The image of the skater on the left was <strong>in</strong>itially used <strong>in</strong> a design for a<br />

London Passenger Transport Board poster Sybil Andrews made <strong>in</strong> the<br />

1930s <strong>in</strong> collaboration with Cyril E. Power, advertis<strong>in</strong>g ice~hockey<br />

matches at Wembley Park. Although this l<strong>in</strong>ocut was made <strong>in</strong> 1953 after<br />

she had moved from England to Vancouver Island, it reta<strong>in</strong>s the spirit of<br />

the 1930s. While <strong>in</strong> England, Andrews was part of the Grosvenor School<br />

of l<strong>in</strong>ocut artists, whose modernist work was <strong>in</strong>fluenced by the Futurist<br />

movement and the changes wrought by <strong>in</strong>dustrialization. The subject of<br />

sport was ideal for portray<strong>in</strong>g the energy of coord<strong>in</strong>ated movement, and<br />

Andrews also depicted horse races, football players and rowers. What was<br />

emphasized about these figures <strong>in</strong> synchronized movement was their<br />

teamwork and their anonymity, as opposed to the <strong>in</strong>dividuality of sports<br />

heroes, reflect<strong>in</strong>g the social and egalitarian outlook shared by the<br />

Grosvenor School. This dynamic pr<strong>in</strong>t re<strong>in</strong>forces the <strong>in</strong>tensity of the<br />

skaters’ forward thrust by elongat<strong>in</strong>g their skate blades aga<strong>in</strong>st a<br />

background of the stylized curves of their track, their bodies mov<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ely~balanced rac<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

This is a f<strong>in</strong>e impression with strong colours on thicker oriental paper.<br />
