The nomination may come from an individual or a group.There is an Order of Australia nomination form which can be downloaded from www.itsanhonour.gov. au or obtained from the Honours Secretariat at Government House, Canberra. The confidential nomination should include an outline of how the nominee has made a significant contribution to the community. Contact details of the person making the nomination, of the nominee and four referees who can directly comment on the nominee’s contribution and achievements are required. The information on the nomination form is strictly for the Council for the Order of Australia to assess the nominee. Consideration of a nomination can take between 18 months and two years. People in the news — more on the next page A new Association president takes over Mr Ross Adler AC (right) was elected the new President of the Order of Australia Association by the Board of the Association at its meeting coinciding with the OAA Annual Conference in Canberra in February. Ross replaces outgoing president the Hon Shane Stone AC QC, who retired at the conference after his busy and successful three-year term. Ross, a distinguished Australian, is a most successful businessman and is dedicated to service in the Australian community. In 1999 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia and in 2007 elevated to Companion of the Order of Australia. In 2011 he was honoured with the degree of Doctor of the University of Adelaide. He has been a director of the Foundation of the OAA since its inception and strongly supports its program of providing scholarships to young Australians to further their tertiary education. His business interests are centred on Amtrade Alumni Award recognises work on people trafficking Dr Anne Gallagher AO (right) has been named as joint recipient of the 2013 Australian National University’s Alumni Awards for her continuing work as an advocate for today’s “slaves” — the victims of people trafficking. In an article in the Autumn edition of ANU Reporter, Lisa Visentin writes: Anne has built a formidable career as a lawyer, practitioner, teacher and scholar with a significant international reputation in human rights and the administration of criminal justice. After graduating from ANU with a Master of International Law in 1992 and holding various roles in Canberra, Anne served as Special Adviser to Mary Robinson, the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former President of Ireland, from 1998 to 2000. During that time, Anne led the development of the United Nations Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights and Human Trafficking and was the founding Chairperson of the UN Interagency Group on Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling. Since resigning from the UN in 2003, Anne has led the Asia Regional Trafficking in Persons Project. The $US30 million project is an intergovernmental initiative funded by the Australian Government, aimed at strengthening legislative and criminal-justice responses to human trafficking and related exploitation in all 10 Association of South East Asian Nations member states. While juggling guest-lecturer positions at some of the world’s best universities, consulting to the UN and authoring numerous documents, handbooks, research reports and training materials on human rights, criminal justice The Order No. 33, Winter 2013 International, a market-leading supplier of chemicals, plastics, raw materials and specialty products to all major segments of Australian and New Zealand industry. He was a major player in the development of the oil and gas giant Santos. Ross holds or has held board and chairman positions on many business and not-for-profit organisations, including the International Chief Executives Organisation, the Australia Japan Business Co-Operation Committee, the University of Adelaide Council, the Defence SA Advisory Board and the FTA Export Advisory Panel. Directorships include the Australian Trade Commission, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Limited and Telstra Corporation. His civic and community record of service is impressive. He has served on governing boards of the SA State Theatre Company, the Adelaide Festival of the Arts, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, the Formula One Grand Prix Board, the Adelaide Legacy Torch Appeal and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards (SA). As our new President, Ross will bring a wealth of business acumen to the association and his record of service to the community will be valued by the members and board of the association as we move to raise the national profile of both the Order of Australia and the Order of Australia Association. and the rule of law, Anne remains committed to mentoring others. Anne was awarded the inaugural Australian Freedom Award for her international work against contemporary forms of slavery in 2011. She was made an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2012. She was also named, in the same year, a Trafficking in Persons Report Hero — by the then US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton — for her work in the global campaign against modern slavery. Dr Gallagher’s co-awardee is Dr Martin Parkinson, Secretary to the Treasury. This is the inaugural year in which the Australian National University has celebrated and thanked alumni for all they have done for the ANU, Australia and the world. The awards recognise a diverse group of alumni who are making differences, seven of the winners falling into the following categories: Student of the Year, Young Alumnus of the Year, International Alumnus of the Year, Alumnus of the Year and the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Commendation Award for Alumni Volunteer Leadership and Service to ANU and the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Commendation Award for Alumni Innovation and Entrepreneurship. 3
