DIPLOMA OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN<br />

CRIMINOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL<br />

STUDIES<br />

This is a credit-based qualification.<br />

These regulations should not be read <strong>in</strong> isolation. It is important that you read them <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />

with the follow<strong>in</strong>g documents:<br />

• General Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)<br />

• Student Regulations<br />

• Module Regulations<br />

DHE–CPS Q1 QUALIFICATION NAME<br />

DHE–CPS Q1.1 The University <strong>of</strong>fers the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong><br />

Psychological Studies. The qualification is referred to as the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong><br />

Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies. Holders <strong>of</strong> this qualification are permitted to use the letters<br />

DipHE (Open) after their names.<br />

DHE–CPS Q2 REGISTRATION<br />

DHE–CPS Q2.1 To register as a student, you must satisfy the requirements set out <strong>in</strong> Student<br />

Regulation OU 3. There is no academic entry requirement.<br />

DHE–CPS Q2.2 To be awarded the <strong>diploma</strong>, you must be registered for it <strong>and</strong> have successfully<br />

completed all the requirements.<br />

DHE–CPS Q2.3 You must study modules <strong>in</strong> the order, if any, specified <strong>in</strong> the enrolment process<br />

for your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for the<br />

qualification.<br />

DHE–CPS Q2.4 If you are count<strong>in</strong>g OU credit that was awarded before register<strong>in</strong>g for the<br />

qualification or an award <strong>of</strong> credit transfer, or if you are chang<strong>in</strong>g your pathway with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

qualification, the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g credit must be studied <strong>in</strong> the order, if any, specified <strong>in</strong> the enrolment<br />

process for your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director<br />

for the qualification.<br />

DHE–CPS Q3 CREDIT REQUIREMENT<br />

DHE–CPS Q3.1 The University will award you the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology<br />

<strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies if you have a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> 240 credits from approved modules, provided<br />

that:<br />

(a) 60 credits are from specified core option modules at OU first level<br />

(b) 60 credits are from specified option modules at OU first level<br />

(c) 120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU second level.<br />

DHE–CPS Q3.2 The Senate may permit you to qualify for the <strong>diploma</strong> if you have 240 credits <strong>of</strong><br />

which 120 credits are from successfully completed modules at OU second level <strong>and</strong> not more than 120<br />

are transferred credit at OU first level.<br />

DHE–CPS Q3.3 The credit for this qualification must <strong>in</strong>clude from Open University modules a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum amount <strong>of</strong> credit that meets the conditions <strong>of</strong> General Qualification Regulation GQR 3.4;<br />

that m<strong>in</strong>imum amount is 90 credits.<br />

DHE–CPS Q4 CREDIT TRANSFER<br />

DHE–CPS Q4.1 The credit transfer scheme for the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology<br />

<strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies is governed by General Qualification GQR 6.<br />

DHE–CPS Q4.2 Any award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the specified modules at OU first level<br />

will take the form <strong>of</strong> general credit exemption.<br />

DHE–CPS Q4.3 Credit transfer is not permitted towards the modules at OU second level.<br />

DHE–CPS Q4.4 The study considered for an award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit must have been completed<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the 16 years prior to the University receiv<strong>in</strong>g your complete application for credit transfer<br />

towards this <strong>diploma</strong>.<br />

DHE–CPS Q4.5 The maximum award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher<br />

Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies is 120 credits.<br />

DHE–CPS Q5 DURATION OF STUDY<br />

DHE–CPS Q5.1 The OU credit required for the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong><br />

Psychological Studies must be obta<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g a period not exceed<strong>in</strong>g 12 years, except where credit<br />

transfer has been awarded, <strong>in</strong> which case the time to complete the OU credit will be less, as detailed <strong>in</strong><br />

General Qualification Regulation GQR 6.13.<br />

DHE–CPS Q5.2 The Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies can<br />

be obta<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g the time that the <strong>diploma</strong> is available. If the <strong>diploma</strong> is approved for withdrawal,<br />

regulation GQR 3.1.2 will apply.<br />

DHE–CPS Q5.3 Credit from particular modules may cease to be countable towards the Diploma <strong>of</strong><br />

Higher Education <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>ology <strong>and</strong> Psychological Studies at a specified po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> time after their<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al presentation.<br />
