and social aspects of the fishery described and <strong>in</strong>cluded a higher level of non-l<strong>in</strong>ear causality <strong>in</strong><br />

their mental maps of the issue. In addition, experts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g systems ecologists, an ecological<br />

modeler, and a fisheries specialist went through the same exercise. Comparison of these expert<br />

maps to the participant maps showed that the students who had received systems-based<br />

<strong>in</strong>struction created causal maps that were more similar to the expert maps than were the control<br />

group’s maps.<br />

The 2006-2007 school year saw the launch of the International Learn<strong>in</strong>g Community Project.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g with the groups Consent Consult<strong>in</strong>g & Baco Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>Education</strong> from the<br />

Netherlands, a group of 13 educators, from the Netherlands, <strong>in</strong>volved with systems th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

came to Portland for a week <strong>in</strong> October. They were hosted by teachers from Portland and worked<br />

side by side <strong>in</strong> classrooms. The follow<strong>in</strong>g March the educators from Portland went to the<br />

Netherlands to work and learn with their counterparts.<br />

Portland Waters Project: Go<strong>in</strong>g Forward<br />

Our focus has moved away from face-to-face mentor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the classroom to tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Live<br />

workshops as well as tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and support are offered throughout the year and through the<br />

website. The Waters Foundation website has existed for the past 7 years and provided a way to<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduce systems as well as be a tool for educators after tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ( www.watersfoundation.org ).<br />

We are cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g the development of the website. One project spearheaded by the Tucson<br />

group will be a series of learn<strong>in</strong>g modules; the <strong>in</strong>itial modules will be based on our Level One<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. It will be designed for multiple audiences – people with no experience explore a selfpaced<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g environment about systems th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g or people that have been practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

field and want to refresh their memory concern<strong>in</strong>g a concept, habit or tool will be able to enter<br />

the modules at whatever po<strong>in</strong>t they wish. The big question fac<strong>in</strong>g the project as we go forward is:<br />

how do we <strong>in</strong>crease our capacity to be able to tra<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number of people that we<br />

believe will be seek<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g?<br />

CIESD: History<br />

The Center for Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary Excellence <strong>in</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>Dynamics</strong>, LLP (CIESD) began as The<br />

Waters Center for <strong>System</strong> <strong>Dynamics</strong> (WC) at Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College of Vermont. Charged by its<br />

funders, Jim and Faith Waters (Waters Foundation), to utilize system dynamics (SD) to support<br />

<strong>in</strong>novation across the broad educational community, the WC developed curricular materials<br />

(largely simulation based), tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs (<strong>in</strong> both conceptual and simulation model<strong>in</strong>g), and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g software (e.g. DemoDozen and MSST) for a wide spectrum of K-G students and<br />

educators (both classroom teachers and build<strong>in</strong>g and district adm<strong>in</strong>istrators).<br />

With Tr<strong>in</strong>ity’s closure <strong>in</strong> 2000, WC transitioned <strong>in</strong>to CIESD, a consult<strong>in</strong>g partnership reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a<br />

strong, but not exclusive, focus on educational outreach. Dur<strong>in</strong>g CIESD’s first four years (2001<br />
