‘Engineers Should Start Imagineering’
says Dr.Hanuman Chowdhary
15 th September, the Engineers’ Day
was celebrated at the university
with great fervor and rich tributes
Visweswarayya. Addressing the
gathering, Dr.Hanuman
Chowdhary said, “There can be no
history for a nation, if great people
are not honoured”. “There is not
enough recognition for intelligence
and creativity in India”, he
lamented. Young engineers should
combine imagination and
engineering, and be led by
‘Imagineering’. Quality education
and patriotism are necessary to
make Bharat Mahan. Mr. R.
Mahesh Ronda advised students to
develop learning ability,
communication skills, and
presentation skills in addition to
improving their knowledge of
programming languages. Dr. MYS
Prasad, Associate Director of Satish
Dhawan Space Centre shared his
experiences while launching the
space craft, Chandrayan-I. He
discussed the travails faced by
space engineers. Rs.5000 crores is
spent annually on Space Research
in India. Satellite or Aerial Remote
obtain reliable data for supporting
the growth of agriculture, trading,
industries, services, science and
In collaboration with Indian
Geotechnical Society, Guntur
Chapter, the Department of Civil
Engineering organized a one-day
workshop on ‘Problems and
Adversities in Geotechnical
Engineering Practice and Solutions
(PAGES)’ on 30th July 2011.
The objective of the workshop was
to promote good liaison and cooperation
among the geotechnical
researchers, faculty, professional
engineers and students. “It offered
the participants a unique
opportunity for exchanging
academic and practical experiences
in Geotechnical Engineering,” said
Dr. A. Srinivasa Prasad, HoD Civil
Engineering. “The advancement
and innovative achievements in
Soil and Rock Engineering Projects
were discussed during the
workshop. About 400 delegates
took part in the workshop. Dr.V.
Madhusudhan Rao, Director-DET
in his opening address appreciated
the endeavours of the Department
of Civil Engineering and felt that
workshops of this sort provide both
teachers and students with a
platform for learning and research.
Er. I.V.Anirudhan said that ground
improvement programmes like
pre-loading with settlement
accelerators would require good
planning with respect to site
development. He expressed that the
co-ordination among the
foundation consultant, the
architect, the structural engineer
and the owner is a must in taking
up ground improvement programs.
Prof. M.Rama Rao, Secretary,
IGS-Guntur Chapter presented two
case- studies related to problematic
soils; one being the soil, which was
College, Warangal and the second
being soft clay sub-grade at Deep
Water Port, Kakinada. He
explained how, in the first case, an
inadequate site investigation could
cause distress to a structure founded
in expansive clay and in the second
case how the introduction of a jute
geo-textile vastly improved the
performance of the pavement laid
over a soft clay sub-grade. Mr.
M.Lakshman Rao, Asst.Manager
(Designs), M/s IVRCL Ltd.
Hyderabad familiarized the
participants with the Reinforced
Soil Structure (RSS) with
wrap-around system. He discussed
elaborately the needs, advantages
and applications of reinforced soil
structures. He felt that the
Reinforced Soil Slopes were costeffective
solutions as good quality
of material is not available in many
parts of India.
The workshop concluded with a
prolific interaction between the
participants and the resource
persons.
The School of Chemical and
Bio-Technology conducted a
seminar on “Fire and Safety”
on 27 th Sept. The Resource
person, Mr. Johnson
G. Narayana from Kings
Institute of Fire and Safety
enlightened the participants on
the crucial steps to be taken for
avoiding domestic fire
accidents. They shed on light
on how to conduct Leakage
Test, causes of electric short
circuit, fire fighting etc. They
elaborated on the minimum
rules and regulations to be
followed for maintaining an
accident free and safe
atmosphere at home and office.
