EDUCATION
UNDER FIRE !
When we say India, we speak of a
nation that was known from earliest
times for its wise scholars and
philosophers. As a nation that
taught the world how to count, how
to meditate and medicate; a nation
where astronomy was born; a
nation that once had centres of
learning; a nation renowned for its
great civilization and heritage, it
was indeed a beacon to the rest of
the world.
Can any of us, otherwise proud to
be Indians, digest the bitter truth
that this nation, once a renowned
center of learning, has not a single
university today that can claim a
ranking in the top 500 institutions
of the world?
But one has to…
For this epic accomplishment,
kudos to our prevailing education
system. The objective of the
twenty-odd years of education in a
person’s life is to provide him/her
with an orientation and ideology
essential for leading a socially
responsible, materially successful
and emotionally balanced life. It is
this very objective that the present
system ignores. Moreover, the
system has not succeeded to any
extent in promoting scientific
temper among students; we lack
visionary scientific leaders. Even
our so called premier institutions of
higher learning lack credibility at
the global level. Teaching of
science or technology is most often
limited to theory. Our system does
not lay adequate thrust on creative
applications of science or
technology as western institutions
do.
Education in the past was driven by
values and morals. Discipline and
right conduct was the natural
outcome of good education. On the
contrary, the current education
system is in deep crisis. It is
churning out hollow men and
women, devoid of character or
intellect.
Today, we lament on the gross
commercialization of education.
There is an exponential increase in
the number of educational
institutions. Education, in the
dubious sense of the word, has
spread to remote corners of the
nation. But the question that needs
to be answered is whether the
students from these institutions
deserve to be recognized as
‘educated’.
Often, it is the parents, who are
Greetings to
Faculty and Students of
Vignan University!
We are pleased to introduce the revamped
September 2011 edition of Voice.
This issue that you hold in your hands
owes itself to a conversation the Editor
had with Mr. Lavu Krishna a couple of
months ago. Browsing through an issue
of Voice, he remarked that the newsletter
needed more colour and student
contributions to appeal to the student
community. This got us thinking and the
VOICE editorial board decided to seek
some professional help. We approached
The Hindu for suggestions and Mr. Samuel
Jonathan, Chief reporter, Guntur and Mr.
Anand Mohan, Designer graciously
accepted to conduct a series of workshops.
We are delighted with the results of the
make-over.
This has been a particularly eventful and
responsible for this sorry state of
affairs. They are ill informed and
overambitious regarding their
child’s education. They spend
money rather than time on their
child’s education. This has spawned
a host of corporate educational
institutions. The resultant system is
an oppressive one, limiting
students’ horizons often rendering
them ‘frogs in a well’. Examinations
were intended to be mere
appraisals of a student’s learning
process, but they have now become
the very purpose. Students who
long for education as something
transcendent and powerful find
themselves locked in institutions
that reduce learning to a mindless
and irrelevant routine of drill and
skill. The reservation system that is
a boon to the underprivileged
students has become a bane to the
student community because it
promotes mediocrity and produces
inept teachers.
If the abundant human resources of
this great nation are to be harnessed,
a wholesome educational system is
the need of the hour, one that will
equip students with a broad
knowledge base and instill values
and skills that will enable them to
face any situation in life.
Editor's Voice
successful period for the University. Our campus is,
indeed, the most happening place, full of events and
activities. Students and faculty are breaking new
ground across a wide spectrum of areas; hence the
varsity has many reasons to celebrate the fabulous
accomplishments of its members.
Along with the student and faculty accomplishments,
this issue of Voice has a special focus on the
achievement of VU's alumni, both recent and past
graduates. As a university, it is important for us to
keep in touch with our graduates. You can see that
our alumni continue to do us proud. They have not
stopped studying and contributing to the world
around them.
Voice would continue to report the multifarious
activities that are being successfully carried out on
the campus. Catching the VOICE bug, some of our
outstanding students feel encouraged to enhance their
writing skills, stretch their creativity and become
passionately involved in the bringing out of this
newsletter every month. There are other interesting
tidbits and brain teasers strewn over the following
pages. In order to make the newsletter interactive, we
propose to include a new section titled ‘Letters to the
Editor'. Readers can respond to the views expressed
in the articles/book review/film review and make
further suggestions for the improvement of future
issues of the newsletter.
As the university grows and continues to thrive, our
accomplishments highlight the vibrant culture within.
No wonder VU is one of the best and most sought after
institutions of this region. With this issue we hope to
reach out to a much larger number with an expectation
that more and more readers will get interested in
reading the newsletter. Once again, thank you,
students, faculty, staff and management for your
commitment to VOICE.
Hope you all have as much fun reading it, as we had
writing and compiling it!

Tech Buzz
Human beings have five basic
senses that constitutes sight for
vision, sound for communication,
smell for fragrance, taste for sweet
and sour and touch. When a child
is born it does not have all its
senses from its birth but most of
them are developed during the life
time. Millions of years of
evolution have equipped us with
the sensory apparatus to sense the
world. According to human nature
when we see someone, something
or someplace our five senses
perceive the information and help
us in making our decision.
However, the useful information
perceived by our five senses
doesn’t always help us to make
correct decisions. Being human we
have some limitations while
interpreting the data, information
or knowledge, especially one that
is available online. But the
miniaturization of computing
devices and the availability of
internet everywhere has made that
data available everywhere. This
data has a limitation, that they are
limited to paper or mobile phone
or digital screen. There is no
interaction of the data confined to
the digital screen with our actual
world. Consider an example: If we
meet a distant relative, we can get
to know his/her personal or
professional information by taking
our mobile or the digital screen
and googling about him/her in the
data record or where ever we
store it.
Sixth Sense Technology
There is no link between the digital
information and our interaction
with the physical world.
Finally, 6 th sense technology
bridges this gap, bringing
intangible digital information to the
physical world which is tangible
and allows us to interact with the
information using our normal hand
gestures.
Sixth Sense is also named as
“WEAR THE WORLD.” It
enables us to use the entire world
as our computer.
Physical Aspects of the
Sixth Sense Device :
Sixth sense is a device with basic
gestural interface which augments
the physical world around us with
the digital information available.
The hardware components are
coupled in a pendant like mobile
wearable device.
The components constituting the
sixth sense device are,
1. Micro Battery Projector.
2. Mirror.
3. A high resolution camera.
4. A Phone with internet
connectivity and software to
allow the other devices to
interact with Phone.
5. Coloured markers.
Now coming to the function and
use of each of the components
mentioned above.
Micro Battery Projector :
It’s a small battery powered
projector that projects the digital
information on any surface - it can
be a wall, a piece of paper or if
nothing is available, on our palm.
In simpler words it can be used to
project on any opaque surface.
Mirror :
The small mirror receives the data
from the projector and reflects it on
to the opaque surface.
A high resolution camera :
The high resolution camera is used
to capture the physical world
around and the physical gestures
through which we contact the
physical world around us. The
camera recognizes and tracks the
user hand gestures and the physical
object that is in front of it.
Coloured Marker :
Coloured markers are simple
colour caps or it can be nail paint
that helps to differentiate the
normal fingers from the fingers
with which we perform the gestures
and each is different enough to
differentiate it a little further. These
are also called as visual tracking
fiducials. Movements or
arrangements of these fiducials are
interpreted as gestures that acts as
interaction instruction for the
projector application interface. The
maximum number of tracked
fingers is constrained to the
uniqueness of the fiducials. Hence
by using unique fiducials we can
provide a support for multi touch
and multi user interaction.
HOW IT WORKS:
The Sixth Sense prototype is
comprised of a pocket projector, a
mirror and a camera. The hardware
components are coupled in a
pendant like a mobile wearable
device. Both the projector and the
camera are connected to the mobile
computing device in the user’s
pocket. The projector projects
visual information enabling
surfaces, walls and physical objects
around us to be used as interfaces;
while the camera recognizes and
tracks user’s hand gestures and
physical objects using computervision
based techniques. The
software program processes the
video stream data captured by the
camera and tracks the locations of
the colored markers (visual
tracking fiducially) at the tip of the
user’s fingers using simple
computer-vision techniques. The
movements and arrangements of
these fiducials are interpreted into
gestures that act as interaction
instructions for the projected
application interfaces. The
maximum number of tracked
fingers is only constrained by the
number of unique fiducials, thus
Sixth Sense also supports multitouch
and multi-user interaction.
Mobile computing device
The SixthSense system uses a
mobile computing device in the
user’s pocket as the processing
device. The software program
enabling all the features of the
system runs on this computing
device. This device can be a mobile
phone or a small laptop computer.
The camera, the projector and the
microphone are connected to this
device using wired or wireless
connection. The mobile computing
device is also connected to the
Internet via 3G network or wireless
connection.To run the Software
component of Sixth Sense the
prototype system runs on windows
platform and major part of the code
is written in C++ and C#.
1. Drawing in open air
2. Getting updates while
reading newspaper
3. Using hand as dial pad
4. Playing with image
Imagine a bar of rich, creamy
chocolate that melts even as you
put it in your mouth.Visualize a
young boy who fantasizes over a
chocolate more intensely than
anything else. Sadly, his parents
can afford only a bar of chocolate
a year, on his birthday. And when
he gets it, he has the largesse to
share it! Meet Charlie Bucket, the
scrawny boy with a loving but dreadfully poor family consisting of an
earner (his father) and six dependents-his grandparents, his mother and
Charlie-a family for whom two square meals were a luxury. Meet the
eccentric genius, Mr.Willy Wonka, the owner of the world’s biggest
chocolate factory whose announcement sends kids world-over,
scrambling to buy chocolates. The five lucky ones to find golden tickets
in their chocolates would bag a lifetime opportunity to visit Wonka’s
mysterious factory, besides earning truckloads of chocolates and goodies
to last a lifetime.
Through a bizarre stroke of luck, Charlie finds the last of the coveted
golden tickets. Along with his grandpa, he earns the opportunity of a
guided tour to Wonka’s factory.
Entering the factory, is like a dream come true. Charlie, along with the
four other winners, beholds some of the most amazing and irresistible
sights. Chocolate waterfalls, eatable marshmallow pillows, magical
creatures called oompa loompas, fizzy lifting drinks, lickable
wallpapers, grass made of sugar, great gum machines, strange
contraptions that transmit chocolate through television and so on.
As the other children, all spoilt brats fall prey to different temptations,
Charlie the staunchest one sticks out to the very end, for which he is
rewarded with offers beyond his wildest dreams.
Essentially a children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, appeals
to all people, regardless of age, culture or geography. It presents a
delightful, pristine world viewed with a child like wonder. At the heart
of it, though, lies a profound message. The book depicts the triumph of
the underdog. The author, Roald reminds us how important it is to
savour the simple joys of life, like Charlie who nibbles a single, precious
bar of chocolate for an entire month. At another level, the book upholds
the never- say-die human spirit. It inspires us not to abandon hope or
our values even in moments of despair while reinforcing to us the
valuable lesson that virtue is greater than wealth. With his exquisite
touch, Roald creates a world of pure fantasy. His fluid and casual style
gently nudges the reader into the magical world of Willy Wonka.
Ultimately it leaves them with a warm, enchanted feeling, much like
the aftertaste of a pure Wonka’s creamy chocolate.
Film : Dookudu
Cast : Mahesh babu, Samantha, Prakash Raj, Brahmandam,
Kota Srinivas Rao, Sonu Sood, M S Narayana
Story : Gopi Mohan
Producer : Achanta Gopi chand, Ram & Anil Sunkara
Director : Sreenu Vaitla
Runtime : 2hrs 50mins
Prince Mahesh Babu’s most awaited movie has finally hit the theatres. It got released in more than 1500
theaters on day one. Well, does the movie meet the expectations raised by fans?
Glimpse of the story - Mahesh Babu(Ajay) is the son of Prakash Raj(Shankar Naryana). Prasanthi(Samantha)
is his love interest. Shankar is a gentle human being, who loves to help the poor. He lives on the hope that his
son, Ajay will someday become an MLA after him. But his hopes are shattered as things go awry. What goes
wrong?
Will Ajay be able to keep his father safe and happy? The story revolves around these questions and whether
or not Ajay will succeed keeps the audience on tenetrhooks…
Opinion - Dookudu, no doubt, bears the hallmark of Sreenu Vaitla and is bolstered by a sound script but,one
wonders how a professional movie critic may feel.Though the movie starts with a good pace, halfway through,it
wanes. As if realizing this, the director attempts to make up for the lost tempo in the second half. With a good
load of humour and sentiment, after a few twists, the pace, once again quickens leading to a sharp climax.
Performance - Super star Mahesh Babu most definitely steals the show with his stunning looks, super cool
attitude and wry humour, he has endeared himself even more to his fans after this performance. Coming to
Samantha, she is absolutely gorgeous. Of course, Brahmanandam’s acting tickles you to the core.. Prakash
Raj and Sonu Sood gave credible performances. But, M S Narayana stands out. His comical antics provide
high moments of amusement in the film.
R@ting - Out 5, I would give 3 stars to this flick
Plus points for Mahesh Babu’s acting, Samantha’s looks, Narayana’s
comedy, exotic locations and songs.
Minus points for an uninspiring story, lackluster screenplay and
excessive sentiment
Last word: A good family entertainer!!
Reverend guru Sevyananda, a dedicated disciple
of Swami Vivekananda, currently working with
Ramakrishna Mission, Vijayawada was an
invited speaker during the International Peace
Day celebrations, on 21 st September 2011 at
Vignan University. Varun of II yr Mechanical
Department took the opportunity to interview the
swami. Here is the essence of the exchange…
Varun : Swamiji, would you tell us
something about your premonastic
life?
Sevyananda : Basically, we do not attach too much importance to our
pre-monastic life. The time, when I became a monk is my
real moment of birth, that’s when I became an enlightened
being. What I was before that is not of much significance.
Varun : May I know, why you chose to become a monk?
Sevyananda : “Urge within myself”, a book by Swami Vivekananda, that
I read early in my youth made me reflect on the true
purpose of life. It was a great inspiration to me.
Varun : Where does the beauty of monastic life lie?
Sevyananda : We believe that every man is a divine being. God is not an
imagination. It is the power within you. This realisation is
reinforced to us every day of our monastic life. It is what
helps us enjoy true celestial bliss.
Varun : What does peace mean swamiji?
Sevyananda : Peace is nothing but eliminating negative thoughts from
our mind and transforming the power within us into
something fruitful.
Varun : Do you think it is important to celebrate World Peace Day?
Sevyananda : Certainly, it’s important. The present day youth should
think of seeking peace at least once a year, right?
Varun : Lastly, swamiji, what message would you give our youth
on this occasion?
Sevyananda : Cultivate a strong brain with a large heart.
Always strive to fill your mind with positive
thoughts. And remember education, as said
by Swami Vivekananda, is not merely
working for exams. It is the manifestation
of perfection that lies already in you.
Instead of having to invest time
that customers no longer need to
An ethical hacker is a computer and
network expert who attacks a
security system on behalf of its
owners, seeking vulnerabilities that
a malicious hacker could exploit.
To test a security system, ethical
hackers use the same methods as
their less principled counterparts,
but report problems instead of
taking advantage of them. Ethical
hacking is also known as
Ramya
from Siemens
Alumni
Hi folks! Can’t say how delighted
I am to be talking to all of you.
After my graduation from Vignan
in the summer of 2011, I got
shortlisted for an interview at
Siemens through a reference
posted by one of my cousin’s
friends. There is a programme
called ‘Connect-Employee
Referral Scheme’ in Siemens. If
there are any vacancies for a
position the information will be
circulated to all employees. If an
employee finds someone with all
the prerequisites s/he can refer the
candidate by posting the resume.
My entry happened so.
On 7 th May, I attended the
interview for the position of a
Systems Engineer at Siemens
Information Systems Limited,
Bengalur. It consisted of 4 phases
a) A one hour paper based test
(+1 for a right answer & -1 for a
wrong answer) b) Technical
Interview-1 c) Technical
Interview-2 d) HR interview.
The written test was based on
general aptitude (similar to TCS)
and programming languages C,
C++ and operating systems. The
News
same was tested in technical
interview with questions on the
B.Tech project. The results were
announced on the same day.
I joined the organization on 20th
June 2011. I was lucky to become
the 200th member of our
department.
The last four months at Siemens
have been immensely beneficial
to me. Initially I was a bit
apprehensive about my abilities.
But, as a fresher I was not expected
to come up with great innovations.
All I was expected to do was, be
proactive and show willingness to
learn. While learning, wherever I
stumbled, I was expected to seek a
quick clarification and move on.
Be it technical or general, coming
up with a quick response was
important.
In the initial training period, we
were treated to a lunch with all the
project managers and briefed on
Receiving words of commendation
Siemens’ organizational structure
and its policies. Next, we were
assigned a mini project of one and
a half month, on which we were
subsequently assessed.
Once assigned to the project, we
got acquainted with the work place
dynamics. I picked up some
valuable lessons in Soft Skills. I
learned to appreciate the value of
others’ time. At office, everyone
is busy. If I want to meet someone,
A presentation during the training
even if related to work, I am to
seek prior consent. Our individual
contribution determines the
team’s progress and the project
quality. So, we are always on the
learning curve. We need to equip
ourselves with sufficient
knowledge, see that we bring
value addition to the team.
Now, with two months into a real
time project, I find my work being
tracked on a regular basis. And it
is not always work; the numerous
clubs out here (sports, cultural
etc.) help us to pursue our
interests. We are encouraged to
take part in various activities and
demonstrate our potential.
So friends, life is a journey of
continuous learning, growth and
the ability to adapt. I look forward
to having a great career with
Siemens.
Suraj back to
you from Dublin
Hello friends!
Without much ado we would like
to share our experiences with you.
But before that, one thing worth
remembering is that technology is
worth only when it is put to
practical use. Knowing what’s
happening in the world, i.e.,
gaining global exposure is
important. This has prompted me
to explore VU’s twinning
programme and join the National
college of Ireland.
Ireland ranks as one of the
friendliest countries of the
world. Breathtaking landscape
complemented with an amazing
climate is what the country
promises you. Coming here made
us realize, how simple life can
become once technology is
properly implemented. No more
standing in queues for buses, no
power cuts, and phenomenal day
to day services delivered through
effective governance. Here every
job is respected and all individuals
are treated with dignity no matter
what post s/he holds. That’s
something; I personally appreciate
about this country.
Coming to college life and the
course, I will sum it up in 5 points
* The course is 100% practical
based, that is PBL which is
problem based learning. We are
expected to learn by ourselves
with faculty acting as mere
facilitators. We are often made
to work in groups and advised
to develop applications which
are out of the box.
* The classrooms are truly
heterogeneous. Age of our
classmates vary from 20 to 70
years. We always hear that
learning has no age and time
limitations. We are constantly
made to appreciate that
learning is a process and we
are blessed to have such an
opportunity at an early age.
* However NCI is not only about
studies. The Student Services
Department is a hub of
activity. Recently we
organized a Diwali festival for
our college. A cricket match is
scheduled for next week. Also,
we have a party almost every
alternate week. And, guys
believe me the party is the
"REAL PARTY".
* The labs, library, gym are all,
undoubtedly state-of-the art.
* The International office team is
extremely friendly, they make
us feel at home and help us
whenever we need them.
What to do:
1) Learn cooking; does not mean
you have to be a professional
chef. Just enough to make
some normal dishes. Trust me
you will even love your halfcooked
meals.
2) Manage money: money
matters, you should have a
clear idea on your budget.
3) Proper documents; must have
all the original documents,
have to make sure that we
execute the procedure legally
and get our visa 15 days before
the commencement of the
coursework.
4) Retain focus; can’t forget that
Suraj with Arun Kumar, Yashwanth & Hemanth Som
we are here to study. It is so
easy to get dazzled by the life
style, pomp and show of
Europe. You must not deviate
from your aim but stick to your
purpose. Everything else
comes after.
