It’s a Reading Celebration!
Read Across America Day is a national event held each year
on March 2 nd . This date is also the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the late
author and illustrator also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel. Throughout
the week of February 27 th , the elementary teachers and students
honored Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day by participating in
a variety of reading, writing, science, and art activities to celebrate
the joy of reading. Everyone had smiles on their faces as they were
reminded that reading can be so much fun!
A highlight of the celebration included 28 guest readers.
Members of our school and community were invited into the K-5
classrooms to share their favorite books and read to the students.
Our own Elementary Principal, Mr. Kuhns, read to the entire kindergarten
and first grade. Individual classrooms participated in door
decorating contests with themes to support the love of reading and
learning. Winning classrooms received books as prizes. Mrs. T.
Smith’s third grade class door won for being the most creative; Mrs.
Benner’s class won for most unique; and Mrs. Kauffman’s fourth grade class won
for being the most decorative.
The Cat in the Hat himself made an appearance on Friday, March 2nd.
He performed small assemblies for students in K-2. All were entertained by The
Cat’s antics and lively storytelling of his adventures as a small kitten growing up
with a neighborhood dog. The Cat also read stories to the students, but added a
strong message: to become a great reader, you must “practice, practice, practice.”
“We may not be able
to prepare the future
for our children, but
we can at least our
children for the future.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
The Kindergarten classes enjoyed a beautiful
day walking down to the Millerstown
Post Office. While there, they learned a
bit about how mail is sorted and delivered.
Mrs. Seibert’s class is pictured above, in
front of the Post Office.
