After several years in various industrial
positions, it was clear that I needed an
EMBA in order to have greater management
responsibilities. The EMBA of ESC Rennes
School of Business was exactly what I was
looking for. It developed my leadership skills,
enhanced my overall understanding
of complex organisations, and improved
my ability to manage a business unit.
I also found sharing experiences with fellow
students to be extremely stimulating.
Shortly after graduation, I was offered
a job as managing director
Christophe Vernet
Managing Director, Howmet SAS
Normandy Casting
As an engineer, I needed to compensate for
my business knowledge gaps in order to reach
my objective of an international management
position. This EMBA developed my expertise
in strategy, marketing and finance as well as
my self-confidence and leadership. I am now
much more capable of understanding and
managing cross-cultural situations. I also
learned to expand my network and am more
effective at leveraging relationships with
decision makers in my field.
The EMBA of ESC Rennes was great at
consolidating my engineering and marketing
experience. I found it intellectually
stimulating to go back to school and interact
with professors from different nationalities.
I learned a lot from the case studies,
consulting project, and my fellow classmates.
After the programme, I started my own
company - something which had been on my
mind for a number of years. This EMBA
gave me the confidence and credibility to
finally take the step.
strategy in a variety of contexts: national and
global, products and services, B2B and B2C,
start-ups and multinationals
Electives
THE ELECTIVES TAKE PLACE
AT THE END OF THE COURSEWORK
PERIOD
STUDENTS CHOOSE
TWO ELECTIVES FROM
THE CHOICE BELOW:
Innovation Management
You will learn in this module how firms
determine an innovation strategy, exploit
technological trends, develop firm-specific
competencies, make strategic use of R&D,
and learn from markets and alliances. You
will also examine the firm's internal structure
and processes, including environmental
scanning, resource allocation, and idea
implementation. You will also assess how
firms become "learning organisations,"
develop a creative climate, and the use
Human Resources policies to stimulate
innovation. Numerous company examples
will be discussed
Management of Hi-Tech Business
In this module, you will explore strategic
segmentation, competition, and cost
leadership issues for hi-tech firms and learn
how they can differentiate through
technology and use of analytical tools like
forecasting and trend analysis. Other topics
include: the selection-acquisitionexploitation
of technology, technology
cluster strategies, technology-based alliances,
and patent and risk management. The
module also examines the research and
development process, the impact of structure
on innovation, and learning in a strategic
alliance. Concepts will be illustrated with
case studies and presentations by directors
from both hi-tech start-ups and
multinationals.
Green Business Strategy & Management
This module will enable you to design
pioneering business models and strategies
relating to the preservation or regeneration
of the biosphere, and to assess how your
company can be more innovative and
effective in its environmental management.
You will examine best practices in the areas
of eco-conception, renewable energies, and
environmental management systems,
including how firms measure their ecological
footprint. The development of partnerships
with NGOs and suppliers will also be
explored, as well as key issues in green
purchasing and supply chain management.
CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)
Metrics and Investment
This module has two main themes:
• CSR metrics - how companies measure and
assess their corporate social performance –
criteria, indicators, reporting, standards and
labels. You will learn the significance and use
of reporting systems such as the Global
Reporting Initiatives as well as more specific
norms (ISO 14001,...) and labels (Max
Havelaar,...).
• Socially responsible investment (SRI).
You will examine the methods used by extrafinancial
rating agencies (VIGEO,...) and the
universe of specialized sustainability indices
(Dow Jones Sustainability Index,...).
INDIVIDUAL APPLIED
RESEARCH PROJECT
This individual project is the final phase
of the programme and will allow you to
undertake research on an important issue
that your company is facing, thus becoming
an "in-house" expert. The first step is to
carry out library-based research on the
subject in order to assess current knowledge
and practice. You will then conduct field
research in your firm using methodology
acquired during the coursework period.
For the final phase, you will write a
professional report in which you analyse
your findings and make strategic or
operational recommendations to your firm.
During the project, you will have access to
ESC Rennes' library's extensive data bases
and be supervised by a member of faculty.
Le campus
During the leadership development seminar,
the coach created a safe environment in
which I was able to express myself and
overcome my communication skill gaps. I am
now able to get across my message, objectives,
and strategies with greater clarity and
impact. It also allowed me to completely
rethink my professional goals and develop a
personal business plan, which I now use to
measure the progress I'm making toward my
leadership development objectives
Catherine Martin
Sales Manager, Kantemir
“At the end of the EMBA programme,
I was promoted to a position of business
manager of a France Telecom R&D division
and was asked to lead a merger with a
customer division. This involved
reorganising and optimising production for
a new profit centre. What I learned in the
EMBA of ESC Rennes School
of Business - a strategic perspective and
change management skills - was critical
to my success."
Stéphane Pefferkorn
Production and Business Director, Orange
DT Southwest France
As a specialist in the financial sector, I wanted
to attend a programme that would allow me
to broaden my business knowledge and skills.
The EMBA has definitely accomplished this.
I now have a more holistic view of the firm
and feel much more confident in dealing with
non-financial and strategic business issues.
I see my next career step as a consultant in
The EMBA's leadership development
emphasis was what I needed to reach an
executive management level. After the
programme, a firm offered me a position
with more responsibility. Upon accepting,
I was immediately confronted with a
company crisis. What I had learned in
this EMBA helped me to quickly diagnose
the situation, make recommendations,
and solve the problem. I now that 'have
the director's ear.'
