4-H & Youth Development Agent
Agriculture, Extension, and Fair Committee Report
July 2010
Green Lake County fair exhibits were up again this year. The clubs did an
excellent job promoting 4-H and building the number of kids involved with
leadership activities. The 4-H Ambassadors will assist with many different events
at the fair. Including the Kiss the Calf charity event, ribbon and award
assistances, radio interviews, and working in the clover action area. The fairest
of the fair’s had an opportunity to speak to each show audience and gain some
valuable experience. Many of these youth are busy exhibiting their projects, but
are also taking the opportunity to build their teamwork and leadership skills. Plus
keep everything organized.
Both youth and volunteers have taken more active roles within the livestock
committee. That was stressed area this past year and it is really showing with
the outstanding involvement and leadership.
Also Record Book judging will be taking place in September. The 4-H record
book is a great opportunity for youth to evaluate their project year and record
what they learned over the past year. Each year record book workshops are
held with each club to have older youth mentor newer members.
Strengthening Volunteer Leadership
Upcoming events include a leaders retreat in September. This event is an
opportunity for leaders to learn more about their roles as volunteers and work
with one another. It is also a state requirement to have one leader from each
club take part in this training opportunity. Teamwork, communication, leadership,
and community service will be covered. Curriculum is used that my work team
created.
Agent is continuing work with Horse Council to run meeting efficiently and that
are organized. There will be a 2010-2011 planning meeting in September.

Review of requirements and organization of how the youth are involved in the
project will be evaluated. There were some communication breakdowns and
some changes need to be addressed for the next project year.
Fall club visits will be planned in the upcoming month. This year’s focus will be
community service and leadership.
Agent also attended meeting related to County Department Head duties and
responsibilities. Discussions with office staff on budget have taken place during
July and August.
I am also assisting Nav to get acclimated to Green Lake County and the office.
Professional Development:
Agriculture, Extension, and Fair Committee Report
July 2010

Programming
Family Financial Management
I will be presenting the “Financial Fitness: Getting Your Finances in
Shape!” session on August 11 for individuals referred from the Economic Support
Unit. In partnership with US Bank in Princeton, I will also be offering the Get
Checking program in October. Participants who complete the program are
eligible to open a checking or savings account, regardless of past account
history.
Family Caregiving and Aging
I presented a session titled “Creating Aging Friendly Communities” to
members of the Green Lake County I-Team, organized through the Aging Unit at
Health and Human Services. The program content was developed by the UW-
Extension Aging Specialist, Dr. Clif Barber, and would be a beneficial
presentation for County Board Supervisors and community planners. The focus
of the presentation is on examining population trends and demographics related
to aging and understanding “best-practices” with regard to community
development to support aging residents.
Because one in four adults will be a caregiver (providing care for a family
member or friend), I am offering an educational session on September 23 for
community members to assist them in planning for their future caregiving needs.
I have previously offered the program for Green Lake County government
employees, and now am providing it more widely to the community.
In 2008, I developed an assessment for employees to ascertain their level
of caregiving, the effect caregiving was having on their employment, and
resources that would assist them in their caregiving responsibilities. This survey
was disseminated among Green Lake County government employees and
employees in 5 other Wisconsin counties. The survey project is now available to
employers nationwide through the eXtension website (pronounced E-extension).
Because of my leadership in this project, my work with Green Lake County UW-
Extension is now featured on the new UW-Extension website under a special
“scholarship” section and will also be featured by Dr. Scott Peters during his
keynote presentation at the October 2010 UW-Extension state conference in
Madison.
Volunteer Development
As the advisor to the Green Lake County Association for Home and
Community Education (HCE), I am currently assisting them with several large
educational efforts, including the recent “Kids Safety Day” event at the Green
Lake County Fair, the upcoming Our Day conference at the Green Lake
Conference Center (which had 190 registrations in the first 3 weeks), and the
Wisconsin Bookworms TM program, which provides a set of 8 books to 115 low
income children in Green Lake County.
Agriculture Agent
July 2010
I joined the Green Lake County Extension on July 15, 2010. This report includes a brief
summary of work I have done from July 15 to July 28. First, I would like to thank the
committee members for providing me an opportunity to work as the Agriculture Agent.
Homeowners Call
Since the first day of work, Agent responded to 15 calls from Green Lake County
residents regarding their issues in agriculture, home horticulture, animal production,
forage production and lawn maintenance. To identify their problems and provide
suggestions, Agent visited three home owners’ gardens as per their request- one in Berlin
and two in Green Lake. Agent also provided educational materials to clients by email
attachments and by mails. To provide research based information to clients, Agent used
educational resources from UW Extension Ohio, Michigan and Iowa State Universities.
Radio Extension Program
Radio is one of the important sources of information for clients that keeps them aware of
changing situation and provides a basis for informed decisions. With a felt need for a
Radio program (suggested by Extension Committee chair, County Board chair, County

Extension Director and some clients), program proposal has been developed. As a
process of program implementation, Agent held a meeting with a representative of the
Berlin Radio. The needs of a radio Extension program and views of Extension audience
will be explored during the County fair.
Professional Development
Agent collected information on past agricultural development programs and possible
future programs in the County. Meetings were held with Carla Hargrave (previous Ag.
Agent), Donald Genrich (Adams County), Ken Williams (Waushara County), Nick
Schneider (Winnebago County). A professional development meeting was also held with
Matt Glewen from Calumet County.
Calendar
July 26 - Meeting with Ken Williams
July 27 - Meeting with Don Genrich
July 28 – Meeting with Matt Glewen
July 28 – Meeting with Nick Schneider
July 26 and 27 – Home owners’ garden visit
