opportunities in employment and programming, including compliance with Title IX requirements.

About This Calendar/Family Handbook
This 4-H Calendar & Family Guide was created for families in Green Lake County. We ask that when you use
the calendar, please remember that sometimes information may be added, deleted, or changed for reasons beyond
the control of the leaders involved. Watch the 4-H Focus Newsletter for the most recent and accurate information
or contact the UW-Extension Office for verification of details.
The purpose of this calendar is:
1. To help families plan their 4-H year.
2. To help county and club leaders plan activities.
3. To help everyone in the 4-H program to have important information.
As you will see when paging through the calendar, 4-H has a lot to offer Green Lake County youth and
families. If you have questions about any activities, ask your Club Organizational Leader or the UW-Extension
Office for more information.
4-H members and families may add club activities (and any other family activities they desire) to the
calendar. Families today are very busy and active. This calendar can be a tool to help you make choices for
your family.

What Is 4-H
EMBLEM/COLOR:
In 1907 when Jessie Field Shambaugh, from Page County, and superintendent of Wright County Schools, O.H. Benson
started using a three-leaf clover for the identity of boys and girls clubs. The three H's were for; Head (was trained to
think, plan and reason); Heart (to be kind true and sympathetic); and Hand (to be useful, helpful, and skillful). It wasn't
until 1911 when O.H. Benson worked in Washington D.C. that the idea of the four-leaf clover came into play. He suggested
the fourth "H" to stand for Health (to resist disease, enjoy life, and make for efficiency). Those are the four H's on the four
-leaf clover .
The 4-H emblem is a green (Pantone 347) four-leafed clover with a white “H” on each leaf. When displaying or using
the 4-H Name and Emblem, there are some specific guidelines as it is protected under Federal Statute.
Please note the website: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/4h_name.htm
PLEDGE:
The 4-H Pledge was worded by Otis Hall, Kansas State 4-H leader. It was approved at the first National 4-H Club Camp
in 1927 in Washington, D.C. The words "my world" were added to the pledge in 1973. Their addition is the only change
ever made to the 4-H Pledge
MOTTO:
I pledge
…..My Head to clearer thinking
…..My Hear to greater loyalty
…..My Hands to larger service, and
…..My Health to better living
For my Club, my Community, My Country and my World.
In 1927, the club motto originally proposed by Miss Carrie Harrison, botanist in the Bureau of Plant Industry, was
adopted by the leaders. The motto remains the same today: “To Make the Best Better”
4-H PHILOSOPHY/SLOGAN
“To learn by doing”
“To win without bragging”
“To lose without squealing”

What Is The Role of Family In 4-H
Good youth development programs do not just happen. It takes the combined efforts of parents and volunteers along with guidance
of Extension youth development professionals to establish a good 4-H program. In 4-H we have a team . . . a 4-H team which
contributes to the ultimate development of boys and girls. On this team are the parents who become partners of the team. If this team
is to be successful, then the parents must become "regular players" not "bench warmers."
How can active parent participation strengthen and broaden the 4-H program
4-H work would be totally impossible without the active support of interested parents.
It has been found that boys and girls do better club work when parents show interest, not only by work but also by deeds.
Extending a helping or encouraging hand to a boy or girl is one of the finest ways you can express affection to your children or
other youth.
4-H is a FAMILY AFFAIR offering parents many opportunities to participate in a program with their child and build family unity.
When parental support is positive, the chances are good for the club to become stronger, larger and more active.
In clubs where parental support is good, individual club members receive more personal attention and guidance from leaders
and parents.
Club activities and events will develop and expand with the added support of parents.
4-H has a positive influence on the lives of thousands of boys and girls. This happens only when parents care enough to share
their time, efforts and talents.
What Can Parents Do to Support and/or Help in the 4-H Program
Learn what 4-H is all about (purposes, objectives, etc.)
Exhibit a genuine interest and enthusiasm in 4-H and in your child.
Encourage participation in 4-H activities. Participation stimulates interest and enthusiasm.
Assist your child in selecting a project they will enjoy, a project they have the ability to accomplish and one for which you can
help furnish facilities, financing, needed materials and guidance.
Provide encouragement. Help in project work with record keeping, demonstrations, judging, and completion of attempted
work and leadership responsibilities.
Provide transportation for members to local club meetings, county events and various other activities.
Attend at least half of the club meetings each year with your child.
Get informed about "what's going on” and continue to keep informed.
Provide a meeting place for a project group. When possible, assist leaders and club by providing refreshments or other help.
Volunteer to be a project leader. All adults have abilities that would greatly assist the 4-H program.
Serve on a committee to help plan and conduct special club or county activities and events.

Clothing Preview: Anyone involved in the clothing, knitting, and crocheting project is welcome to create a garment to model at our pre-fair event as well
as the County Fair Awards Program. The emphasis of the preview is on how the garment fits you and the general appearance of the garment. Youth and
leaders work together to pick out a fun theme and make props for the show.
Demonstrations: Our county program encourages you to give a demonstration at some time during your club's 4-H year. Demonstrations are
opportunities for you to share the steps of making or doing a small project and give you the chance to practice and build your speaking skills. Why not
consider entering our Demonstration Contest held each year as a pre-fair event!
Favorite Foods Revue: What a great event! If you'd like to showcase a food you've practiced making and have fun designing a balanced menu and
creative place setting, enter the Favorite Foods Review.
County Fair: Enter some of your project creations, plants, animals, etc! You'll meet with a judge who'll share tips on making your project even better next
year. The judges will give you a ribbon and following the fair you'll receive a small check/award money for your efforts. The best part of the fair is the
fun you'll have visiting with other 4-H members!
Wisconsin State Fair: Participation in the Wisconsin State Fair, held in early August, is open to youth 9-19 years old. Selection for non-animal projects is
done the prior year to the State Fair at the GLC Fair. Animal projects are open to all youth to enter, but livestock exhibition is limited to youth 12-19
years. Note that special guidelines need to be followed in registering animal projects for the State Fair. Please contact the UW-Extension Office regarding
this if you are interested.
National 4-H Week: Early October allows us to show our 4-H spirit through 4-H Club Window Displays, school visits, and general 4-H Promotions.
NE Area Animal Science Days: NE Area Animal Science Day places emphasis on judging for animal project members. The event rotates to various counties
and is usually held in spring.
Club Leadership/Officer Training: We offer a county-wide program in the Fall each year for club officers and others. We go over officer duties, how to
make meetings fun, and do a few activities to get to know one another.
Cloverbud Day: Cloverbud Day is an annual fall event where 4-H Cloverbuds and area schools are invited to participate in a day-long program of
learning. The youth involved partake in projects led by 4-H leaders and older youth.
Super Saturday: Held in February/March, Super Saturday is an opportunity for youth to explore new projects through hands-on sessions.
