ACES MAKE HISTORY The Alexandria
Aces, part of the Cal Ripken Collegiate
Baseball League, made their
first playoff appearance in team
history. The five-year-old expansion
team weathered early-season struggles
and narrowly avoided injury
when a downburst — part of June’s
derecho — interrupted a game en
route to the historic postseason appearance.
Second-year coach Corey
Haines announced plans to leave
the team following the feat.

T.C. ALUM DIES AFTER LENGTHY STRUGGLE T.C. Williams
alum and former soccer star Alhaji Armadu Hassann succumbed
to a head injury he sustained during a late-night
altercation with a bouncer in West Virginia. The 20-year-old
native of Sierra Leone had already overcome the death of
his father and was making a new life in a foreign land when
he was left hospitalized. Friends gathered to play a game at
the city’s high school in his memory not long after his death.
BODY WORK Construction workers made a gruesome discovery near the Duke Street and Interstate
395 exchange, finding a badly decomposed body. Virginia State Police launched an investigation
but struggled to identify the body. The area where it was found, police said, also contained the
remnants of a homeless camp.
