Elliott Turbine-Generator Sets
Reliable, Economical Power
Turbine-Generator Sets
• Low cost power from 50 kW to
30 MW
- Synchronous & induction
An Elliott steam turbine-generator set for the
generation of electricity is money in the bank.
An ever growing number of process plants and
institutions use reliable, efficient Elliott turbinegenerators
to convert thermal energy from their
steam system directly into electricity. A portion of
the energy from steam produced for processes
or heating can often provide electrical energy
at lower cost than the utility supplier. An Elliott
turbine-generator package configured to your
requirements can provide payback on your
cogeneration investment in three years or less.
The electricity marketplace has been transformed
in recent years. Deregulation, ever-increasing
demand, public resistance to new generating
facilities, environmental concerns, new
technologies and alternative sources of supply
have all complicated supplier selection, pricing
and distribution. An Elliott turbine-generator
set gives users with steam systems a smart
alternative for reliably, efficiently and costeffectively
meeting their electrical power needs
with on-site generation. And in many states
government subsidies encourage investment in
cogeneration systems.
2

“The Right Mix”
Cost-effective co-generation of electricity
begins with “the right mix.” The right mix means
first of all a generally predictable demand
for steam. The second part of the mix is a
generally constant electrical load or a Power
Purchase Agreement. With alternating seasonal
demand for heating and air conditioning and
consistent staffing levels, many institutions such
as universities, medical centers, correctional
institutions and corporate campuses fit this
profile.
Elliott’s highly reliable, compact and efficient YR turbines are well-suited to
geared, synchronous turbine-generator applications. More than 35,000 YR
turbines have been sold around the world. This single valve, multistage unit
can produce up to 7000 kW.
The prevalent use of steam in industrial
processes also identifies those plants as
excellent candidates for electrical co-generation.
Steam generation pressures and quantities often
exceed process requirements. With an Elliott
turbine-generator set, excess thermal energy
can be cost-effectively converted into electricity
rather than wasted. Many industries such as
lumber, sugar and food processing utilize waste
material as fuel for low cost steam production.
Elliott turbine-generator packages are integrated
into many industrial applications including:
• Chemicals and petrochemicals
• Distilling
• Food processing
• Primary metals
• Pulp and paper
• Sugar mills
• Institutional steam systems
Biomass and geothermal are also appropriate
applications for Elliott steam turbine-generator
sets.
A Heritage of Quality & Reliability
Elliott Company has designed and manufactured steam turbines for nearly a century. Tens of
thousands of Elliott turbines are in operation today. Around the world and over the course of millions
of hours of operation, Elliott turbines and turbine-generator sets have earned a reputation for high
reliability and efficiency. Elliott’s product line includes single valve single stage (SVSS), single valve
multistage (SVMS) and multivalve multistage (MVMS) turbines.
Flexible, Efficient Configurations
An Elliott back pressure turbine-generator
unit can often be added in place of a
pressure reduction valve in an existing steam
system. The back pressure turbine can use
as little as 5% of the available thermal energy
to generate electrical power, with up to 95%
of the energy remaining available for process
requirements. After the turbine converts
thermal energy from the high-pressure steam
system into mechanical energy to drive the
generator, the exhaust steam is then used
for plant steam or industrial processes.
Depending upon steam conditions, a
backpressure turbine-generator can
produce electricity with little increase in fuel
consumption and no affect on downstream
processes.
Elliott provides high-efficiency condensing
steam-turbine generators for applications
where there is no demand for low pressure
steam. Extraction /condensing turbinegenerator
sets are available when the
demand for lower pressure steam is variable
and less than the available throttle flow.
All Elliott turbine-generator systems are
optimized to provide maximum pay-back
based on varying steam and electricity
demands.
Turbine-Generator Control Systems
Elliott offers sophisticated, flexible, easy to use
turbine-generator control systems. Standard
control systems can be easily modified for
special requirements. Features include:
• Touch screen interface for easy and
accurate control
• Rugged construction, UL listed
• Fully automatic startup, synchronizing
and on-line control
• Complete system monitoring
• Automatic optimization of power generation
with the available steam
• Utility paralleling
• Integrated circuit breaker
Complete packages
An Elliott turbine-generator set is a completely integrated package. Working from your requirements,
Elliott engineers design each unit to ensure trouble-free installation, start-up and operation. Elliott also
keeps lead times short and costs down through the use of standard, proven components.
A typical synchronous steam turbine-generator package includes a steam turbine, gear, couplings,
generator, baseplate, control systems and lube console. Elliott can also provide auxiliary systems
such as electrical switch gear and condensers. Directly connected induction generator packages are
available, as well.
This integrated Elliott
turbine-generator
package (above) includes
a multi-stage condensing
turbine, a speed reduction
gear and a 6 MW
synchronous generator.
