Technology as a Tool and Quality as a Journey<br />

At Saia LTL Freight, quality is a process. It is continually<br />

evolving and being re-defi ned based on expectations – ours<br />

and those of our customers – and the tools that make it<br />

possible. As technology continues to advance, we continue<br />

to implement proprietary software so that the level of quality<br />

that we are able to deliver increases as well.<br />

Here are just a few of the ways Saia LTL Freight is using<br />

advanced technology to re-defi ne quality and service:<br />

On the Road: Since 2011, we have invested over $100<br />

million to update every tractor in our fl eet. Each vehicle is<br />

now equipped with Vnomics’ FleetKnowSys Intelligent<br />

Telematics solution that tracks real-time driver performance<br />

and truck diagnostics. All new tractors also use Bendix ®<br />

Wingman Advanced technogoy to avoid collisions, reduce<br />

driver injuries, roll-overs and loss-of-control situations. Safety<br />

technology is making the road a safer place to be and that<br />

in turn assures that every load arrives in-tact for an on-time<br />

delivery.<br />

For the Customers: Every Saia LTL Freight city<br />

driver is equipped with new handheld devices<br />

that provide our customers with detailed real-time<br />

data on every shipment we handle, including<br />

estimated arrival times for both pick-ups and<br />

deliveries.<br />

Inside the Terminal: Forklifts are now using the latest tablet<br />

computer technology to communicate with dockworkers in<br />

order to speed the process and accuracy of loading. This<br />

cuts down on mis-loads, assuring the right freight gets on<br />

the right trailer. In addition we can send instructions to our<br />

dockworkers electronically which eases congestion on the<br />

dock and speeds the loading and unloading process.<br />

With the Sales Group: Saia LTL Freight has outfi tted our<br />

sales team with iPads pre-loaded with Microsoft Dynamics ®<br />

Customer Relationship <strong>Management</strong> (CRM) software to<br />

help manage each account. The CRM software gives us<br />

a 360-degree view of every customer interaction and can<br />

manage up to 100,000 customer accounts systemwide.<br />

Since 1924, Saia LTL Freight has been part of virtually every<br />

technological innovation that has shaped the distribution<br />

industry. Even more impressive than that, we have added<br />

processes and proprietary software to those advances so that the<br />

value to our customers has been increased ten-fold. In that time,<br />

we have learned to distinguish temporary fads from solutions<br />

that create lasting value. More importantly, our<br />

experience has shown us that technology is merely<br />

a tool. It is simply used to carry out a particular<br />

function. We also know that quality is not a<br />

destination. Instead, it is a mindset that, when<br />

deeply embedded, drives everything else.<br />
