Dear Fellow Members, 

JUMP IN 

In the Fall of 2004, Carla Kantola moved to Texas and our chapter 

was suddenly without a President-Elect. As a member of her Board, Jo 

Rabaut had become an important mentor to me and I believed it was 

important that I raise my hand and show my commitment to our industry. 

I gratefully became Jo’s “PE.” I watched; I followed; and I learned 

about the ASID chapter and the responsibilities of being its leader. 

BRING SUPPORT 

No one can succeed in a leadership position without the support 

of those more talented than you. I owe the joy of this year to the eight 

people that lead this chapter: Grace Howard, Linda Benefield, Teresa 

Sword, Jared Paul, Jackie Naylor, Noreen Kloc, Shadawn Zareh, and 

Vanessa Deriso. This group taught me a lot about leadership, making 

difficult decisions, and the challenges of commitment. Our work 

together began in the spring of 2005 and was in full gear once we flew 

to Vancouver in July for our Board training. By the time October rolled 

around and we were sworn into office at the Annual Meeting, it seemed 

as if the most difficult part was over. 

DREAM BIG 

During our term, my favorite events brought new opportunities 

for our members to share their work and the journey to their success, 

because sometimes the most we can learn is from each other. Our Commercial 

Storytellers and Residential Storytellers events left our members 

talking for weeks about our presenters’ work (“I didn’t know they 

designed that?!?”), their struggles (“that sounds just like me!”), and their 

triumphs (“I saw that published in a magazine last month!”). These 

events captured the essence of 

the bond that can be felt within 

our chapter. 

And on March 8th, 2007, 

we will undertake one of our 

biggest events ever, the first 

annual ASID Vanguard Lecture 

Series with IDEO’s Tom Kelley. 

In an effort to bring the design 

community together, including 

architects, graphic designers, 

industrial designers, students, 

and artists, we are featuring 

a speaker that asks each of us to think creatively about the design 

of our business and the business of design. Tom Kelley will offer 

insight into creating a culture of innovation. (More information 

provided within this newsletter.) Please join us and bring a design 

friend or client! 

REFLECT 

The ASID Georgia Chapter is a diversely talented group with 

many accomplishments over the years. My travels associated with 

ASID have proven that our chapter is nationally recognized for our 

strengths. And while volunteer organizations are far from perfect, 

we come pretty darn close. 

Thank you for allowing me to serve you. This is a year I will 

always treasure and will never forget.

“Are you nuts??!!!” I retrieved this message from 

my answering machine just after accepting my position as 

president-elect for the year 2007. The source is a very close 

and dear friend who has been active in ASID longer than I. I 

chuckled then took a deep breath… Am I? 

ASID has done so much for me not only professionally 

but also socially. I became involved as a student. Now I am 

involved as a professional. Weighing the pros and cons of 

being elected to this important chapter office, I know I am 

not nuts. 

Outlining the year, I have begun to realize how exciting 

and exhilarating it is going to be. I have an outstanding 

board, a dynamic chapter administrator and incredible membership 

support. It is my hope to spark excitement in every 

member be they IP, Allied ASID, ASID, students, or faculty. 

Become involved and reap the rewards... come to network, 

come to participate, come to organize, come to volunteer or 

come to sponsor. I would like ASID to touch our members 

this year! 

Your attendance at the annual meeting on October 12 

should entice you to continue to attend the other great 

events planned for the year. November sees us hosting an 

evening featuring the Louvre exhibit at the High Museum. Of 

course, the Holiday Gala comes again in December. January 

features our commercial and residential storytellers. And do 

not forget our focus groups that meet monthly. We have a 

place for everyone: Industry Partners, Students, Residential 

and Commercial designers. Jared, Matthew, Teresa, Shadawn, 

Chonda, Peggy, Crystal, Grace and I all look forward to meeting 

you. Hopefully, it will be at one of the upcoming events or 

through your involvement.

Louvre Atlanta 

Please join us on Thursday, Nov. 9th 

2006, for a special evening celebrating 

the opening of the High Museum of Art’s 

Louvre Atlanta exhibition. 

Louvre Atlanta marks the beginning of the High Museum 

of Art’s unprecedented, three-year partnership 

with the Musee du Louvre that will bring hundreds of 

works of art from Paris to Atlanta. Our evening will 

begin with an exclusive overview lecture by Chief 

Curator David Brenneman at 5:30 p.m. in the Hill 

Auditorium. After the lecture, ASID members will be 

invited to tour the exhibition at 6:30 

and 7:00 p.m., enjoy drinks in the 

Wieland Lobby or dinner at 1280.

Our 2006 Georgia Chapter Annual Meeting 

will be held on Thursday, October 

12th at the RED Showroom at 1110 West 

Peachtree Street in Atlanta. 

Our outgoing president, Lucy, will give her farewell 

and our incoming president Jackie Naylor will give 

her welcome along with the installation of the 2006- 

2007 board. Special chapter and national award 

presentations will be made, too. 

The beneficiary of this event will be the Ruby Slipper

ASID invites you to attend an tour of 

the environmentally-friendly EcoManor on 

October 17th, 2006. 

Georgia’s first LEED certified residence, and one of the very 

first in the United States, features earth-friendly materials and 

energy conservation options to consider when working with 

building or re-modeling projects. EcoManor is the first residence 

in the Southeast to utilize both solar and geothermal energy to 

power its daily energy use.

our country’s most respected and influential designers. 

“In describing my friend, Jerry Pair, one word immediately 

comes to mind - connoisseur. From the Latin 

“to know,” Webster’s dictionary defines “connoisseur” as 

“a person qualified to act as a judge in matters involving 

taste and appreciation.” That is our friend and colleague, 

Jerry Pair. 

“He must have been born with built-in style radar. His 

sense of style governed not only the manufacturers’ lines

Pamela Goldstein Sanchez, CKMBD, Allied Member 

ASID won second place in the third annual Best Kitchen Design 

Competition. A total of $40,000 in cash, scholarships and 

travel were awarded to professional and student kitchen designers 

who incorporated proper Best by Broan kitchen ventilation 

in three categories. 

ai3, Inc. with members Lucy Aiken-Johnson, ASID and

issue of Contract magazine as six new national firms to watch. 

Also, featured was The Globe Restaurant on 5th Street of which

TVS Interiors’ project, The Georgia Aquarium, was on the

Alison Levino-Jones, ASID received the Trish Patterson

georgia’s new contractor licensing 

what does it mean for design professionals?

Are you prepared to get another license to stay in 

business? Think Georgia’s new contractor licensing 

act does not impact designers? Ready for a shock? 

Registered Interior Designers, already licensed under Georgia law, 

may now also need to hold a contractor’s license to continue their 

current business! Got your attention now? So let’s discuss what 

Georgia’s new contractor licensing system is and why it may impact 

designers. Then we will examine our options for protecting our 

businesses via our current licensing status with the state. 

The Georgia licensing law went into effect on July 1, 2005. 

Any contractor performing “construction” after January 1, 2008 is 

required to have a contractor’s license unless the work falls under 

the very limited exceptions. So let’s understand what constitutes a 

contractor under the act. 

Who is a Contractor? 

Work performed by designers often involves the improvement 

of real property and, at a minimum, construction management services. 

Designers often have contractual risks to the owner for the 

construction. Those services typically would fall under the broad 

definition of contractor (please see the ASID GA website for full 

definitions of contractors). It takes a very limited business model 

to avoid qualifying as a “contractor” under the new law. Designers 

will need to limit their business models (which could create excessive 

economic hardship in the marketplace), find an exemption 

from the coverage of the act or apply for a license. And there is an 

extremely important deadline looming at the end of this year! ** 

There are a few exemptions from the act. Please see the inset 

below to see why Registered Interior Designers are not exempted 

from the Georgia construction licensing act and visit www.asidga. 

Why Registered Interior Designers 

are not exempted from the Georgia 

construction licensing act 

Architects are exempt from licensing 

and many would think that because 

Registered Interior Designers are 

regulated by the Georgia State Board 

of Architects, Registered Interior 

Designers would be exempt as well. A 

technical reading of the law indicates 

that Registered Interior Designers are 

NOT “architects” licensed under Chapter 

4 of Title 43; rather Registered 

Interior Designers are registered as 

“designers” under Article 2 of chapter 

4 of Title 43. 

What does this mean? No official ruling 

from the State Licensing Board for 

General and Residential Contractors 

on this specific issue is posted on the 

official board website; however, it does 

not appear that there is an exemption 

from the coverage of the construction 

licensing act for Registered Interior 

Designers. IF designers are NOT 

EXEMPT and to the extent they are 

covered by sections of the Act regarding 

construction, they are required to 

be licensed.

So how does this pertain to me? 

Some feel the term “Specialty 

Contractor,” and the related exception 

from the coverage of the act, 

will allow them to avoid obtaining 

a contractor license. A designer 

with this limited business model 

may fall within the specific exception 

provided they can overcome a 

big obstacle. The work that a specialty 

contractor may offer must be 

done ONLY by “direct employees.” 

A specialty contractor may perform 

limited, specialty, or specific trade 

contractor work, which does not 

entail the delegation or assignment 

to or engagement of any other 

person or entity other than direct 

employees. If you limit your business 

model, in a changing environment, 

you may not be able to take 

on desired work and ultimately you may find that you will have to 

obtain a license anyway. 

Licenses available 

There are three types of licenses available: Residential – Basic 

License; Residential – Light Commercial License; and General 

Contractor License. The work that may be performed is determined 

by the type of license. Please see www.asidga.org for definitions on 

the three different types of contractors and visualize the work you 

anticipate performing. If you are going to obtain a license, the type 

of license you obtain will be critical. 

How to apply 

Those who want a license will have to either have file an application 

and take the appropriate test prior to the January, 2008 

date OR they will have to file an application and obtain an exemption 

from examination based upon their experience or reciprocity 

(whether interstate or intrastate). Interstate reciprocity will be 

determined after January 1, 2007. **Examination exemption applications 

will only be accepted by the Construction Licensing 

Board between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006. In 

addition there is a currently a $200 application fee. 

Conclusion 

This article is based the licensing statutes currently existing on 

June 1, 2006. It is anticipated that there will be a number of revisions 

in the 2007 legislative session. Review the inset box below 

on “What should you do?” and consider your options. Additional

State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors:

on its website & publications. During this critical period, 

please keep up to date with the information posted. If you are not 

a registered interior designer, you 

should strongly consider becoming 

one in the event that an exemption 

is created specifically for 

licensed interior designers under 

the contractor licensing act. 

What should you do? 

There will be revisions to the current 

act in the 2007 legislative session to 

correct a number of problems. It is 

very likely that there will be some effort 

by a number of professional associations 

to create additional exemptions 

similar to those granted to professions 

such as architects and engineers. It 

is also likely the Georgia ASID will 

attempt to find a solution which 

some would propose should exempt 

registered interior designers who are 

licensed by the state under NCIDQ 

authority. However, in the world of 

politics, there is no assurance that an 

acceptable solution will be achieved. 

Unless legislative relief is obtained, the 

options for designers at this point are 

very limited. For those who can qualify

Dear Members: 

I am very excited to be writing to you as the next student representative to the ASID 

board. However, I am equally as surprised to have this opportunity. Out of all the students out 

there I can’t believe that I have been chosen for this position. I’m honored, of course. I mean, 

who wouldn’t want the opportunity to sit on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chapter of 

ASID as a student? What an excellent and truly unique opportunity to learn about ASID and the 

interior design profession and to make a contribution to the future of our design community. 

What I am most excited about is having the opportunity to help plan events so that students 

can get involved in the design industry. There are tons of events on both the state and 

national level to which we are invited. For starters, there is a student chapter presidents/faculty 

advisors mixer planned at the Viking Showroom for August 17. Not only will there be great 

food and intriguing conversation, but also Viking will be demonstrating their latest 

products. Events like this are the perfect time to begin networking and learning about 

our design community. What better way to discover the many different fields available 

to us upon graduation? Whether you’re interested in green design, retail spaces or 

kitchen design for high end residences, there’s bound to be someone (or at least someone 

who knows someone) to talk with at any one of these events. Remember you won’t 

be in school forever and you’ll need a job someday! 

So, take a moment from your hectic schedule (believe me I know how busy you are) 

to look at the calendar in the quarterly newsletter to see which events you might be interested 

in attending. There are several exciting chapter events in the works and I can’t 

wait to begin planning many more. There’s something for everyone so don’t hesitate to 

get involved. I’m looking forward to a great year!
