Rents for Homestay
accommodation
For the academic year 2011/2012,
rents are;
• Single room, catered
from £135 per week
• Single room, self catered
from £105 per week
• Shared room, catered
from £120 per week
• Shared room, self catered
from £90 per week
Shared rooms are with another
University of Brighton student of the
same sex.
Payments
Students are responsible for paying
for their accommodation directly to
the university. You pay two weeks
rent in advance at the beginning of
your stay and then pay monthly in
advance. Please ensure you pay your
rent promptly. If you do not pay for
your accommodation, you will be
asked to leave the Homestay.
Students are not asked to pay to
the university a deposit for their
Homestay, but any damage caused
by you to the property that does not
constitute fair wear and tear will need
to be paid for by the student.
Your host may ask the student to pay
a deposit to cover any damage, but
this is a matter for negotiation. If you
pay a deposit, it does not have to be
protected in an approved tenancy
deposit protection scheme, because
you are sharing living accommodation
with the owner. At the end of the
arrangement, the owner must notify
the student within 7 days if they
propose to make any deductions
from the deposit, accompanied by
evidence of their loss. They should
immediately return any undisputed
amount to the student. The university
will not pay for any damage or loss
caused by students, and will not get
involved in any deposit disputes.
Cancellation of accommodation
If you wish to leave your
accommodation, we ask that you give
at least two weeks notice. It is more
usual to give a months notice as most
students will pay rent monthly.
The host is also expected to give you
at least two week’s notice if they wish
you to leave. Longer notice periods
may be negotiated with the owner.
Students should make sure they
strike the balance between having
notice that is long enough to find
somewhere else to live, and not being
locked into an agreement for longer
than they would want.
You can contact the accommodation
office to discuss alternative
accommodation arrangements or
how we can help you. Our contact
details are on page 10.
