2. Grading <strong>of</strong> the grapes before sale enables farmers to get better price for<br />
their produce.<br />
3. Grading helps the consumers to get standard quality produce at fair<br />
price.<br />
4. After grading, it is easier for the consumer to compare the prices <strong>of</strong><br />
different qualities <strong>of</strong> a produce in the market.<br />
5. Grading also reduces the cost <strong>of</strong> marketing.<br />
6. Grading helps in segregation <strong>of</strong> grapes for raisin making, juice making,<br />
wine making etc.<br />
3.3.1 Grade specifications:<br />
i) Grading under AGMARK:<br />
The Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937 was enacted to<br />
maintain the quality <strong>of</strong> agricultural produce in India. The Act authorizes the Central<br />
Government to frame rules related to the fixing <strong>of</strong> grade standards and the<br />
procedure to be adopted to grade the agricultural commodities included in the<br />
schedules. In accordance with this Act, specifications have been drawn up for<br />
grapes considering various quality factors.<br />
The grade standards specified for grapes are notified by the Directorate <strong>of</strong><br />
Marketing and Inspection are as follow:<br />
I] GRADE DESIGNATION AND QUALITY OF TABLE GRAPES:<br />
1. Table <strong>Grapes</strong> shall be fruits obtained from varieties (cultivars) <strong>of</strong> Vitis vinifera<br />
L.<br />
2. Minimum requirements:<br />
i) Bunches and berries <strong>of</strong> Table grapes shall be:<br />
a. clean, sound, free <strong>of</strong> any visible foreign matter;<br />
b. free <strong>of</strong> pests, affecting the general appearance <strong>of</strong> the produce;<br />
c. free <strong>of</strong> damage caused by pests and diseases;<br />
d. free <strong>of</strong> abnormal external moisture;<br />
e. free <strong>of</strong> any foreign smell and / or taste;<br />
f. free <strong>of</strong> all visible traces <strong>of</strong> moulds;<br />
ii)<br />
Berries shall be intact, well formed and normally developed,<br />
