P R E F A C E<br />

<strong>Grapes</strong> (Vitis vinifera ) are an important fruit crop in India. <strong>Grapes</strong> are<br />

the third most widely cultivated fruit after citrus and banana. Globally<br />

grapes production contributes to about 16% <strong>of</strong> the total fruit production.<br />

India produced 1878.00 thousand tonnes during 2008 which was about 2.77<br />

per cent <strong>of</strong> the total world production. Maharashtra is the largest producer<br />

<strong>of</strong> grapes in the country. It contributes about 75 percent <strong>of</strong> the total<br />

domestic production. Grape is one <strong>of</strong> the most delicious and nutritious fruit.<br />

<strong>Grapes</strong> are widely consumed as fresh fruit in India. It is also used for<br />

producing raisins, wine, juice, juice concentrate, squash, beverages, jams<br />

and marmalades.<br />

The Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Agricultural Marketing Reforms<br />

(May, 2002), suggested several measures for strengthening agricultural<br />

marketing system in the country for benefiting the farming community to<br />

enhance the share <strong>of</strong> farmers in the ultimate price <strong>of</strong> their produce as well as<br />

for various market functionaries in the new liberalized global market<br />

opportunities and to foster true competition among the market players. This<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ile has been prepared on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Inter-Ministerial<br />

Task Force with a view to enable the farming community to scientifically<br />

manage the post-harvest operations and to widening awareness for better<br />

marketing <strong>of</strong> the grapes. The pr<strong>of</strong>ile covers almost all aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />

marketing, such as post-harvest management, marketing practices, quality<br />

standards, grading, packaging, transportation, storage, SPS requirements,<br />

marketing problems, marketing information, etc.<br />

This “<strong>Post</strong>-<strong>Harvest</strong> <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>ile</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Grapes</strong>” has been prepared by Shri<br />

Manoj Kumar, Marketing Officer under the supervision <strong>of</strong> Dr B. M. Mehrotra,<br />

Assistant Agricultural Marketing Adviser and guidance <strong>of</strong> Shri Rakesh<br />

Saxena, Dy. Agricultural Marketing Adviser, D.M.I. , B.H.O., Nagpur.<br />

The Directorate <strong>of</strong> Marketing and Inspection gratefully acknowledges<br />

the assistance and co-operation extended by various Government/Semi-<br />

Government/Private organisations in supplying the relevant data/information<br />

required for compilation <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ile.<br />
