Since 1980, he has been an independent entrepreneur and founded the company Baertschi Engineering AG in the field of storage and material flow techniques in planning and realization. Presently, he is a partner of b&b consulting GmbH. In 1994, Dr. Baertschi was appointed as a Guest Lecturer at the Center for Industrial Management (BWI) which is a part of the Department of Management, Technology and Economics (MTEC) of the ETH Zurich teaching «Logistics in Practice» and conducting various series of lectures in logistics management. In the MBA ETH SCM program, he coaches and supervises master’s theses. Roman Boutellier Swiss PhD in Mathematics, MBA Vice President Human Resources and Infrastructure (VPPR) Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) roman.boutellier@sl.ethz.ch MBA ETH SCM Modules: General Management; Management & SC Integration Professor Roman Boutellier was conferred a doctorate in 1979 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in mathematics. Postdoctoral, he spent a year at the Imperial College in London doing research in function theory. He later completed a degree in business administration. Since October 2008, Professor Boutellier is Vice President Human Resources and Infrastructure at ETH Zurich. From 2004 until September 2008 he was Full Professor for Innovation and Technology Management at ETH Zurich. Since 2005 he chairs the Master of Advanced Studies in Management, Technology, and Economics. In 1999 he was nominated as Adjunct Professor for Technology Management at the University of St. Gallen. Dr. Boutellier teaches the General Management and Management & SC Integration modules of the ETH MBA SCM program. In General Management, he focuses on the principles of behavior and performance levers within organizations, demonstrates leadership strategies to allow deployment of available resources within an organization as well as how to design an organization to achieve strategic goals and align decision-making to situations within the organization. In the present course, as a case study, Dr. Boutellier assigned the task of how to build up a strategy for market expansion to France, including creating a business plan and developing appropriate logistics strategies. Dr. Boutellier has both management experience in the private sector as well as in academia. From 1999 until his nomination at the ETH he was President and Chief Executive Officer of SIG Holding Ltd. Under his management the € 2 billion group developed from a diversified conglomerate to a globally active group with a focus on liquid packaging. From 1993 until 1999 he was a Professor at the University of St.Gallen and the President of the Institute of Technology Management. From 1987 until 1993 he was Head of the Technical Division at Leica AG in Heerbrugg and from 1981 until 1987 of the Optical Calculation Department and Optics Manufacturing at Kern in Aarau, during which he spent some time on a study visit at the Optical Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona. He is a member of various boards dealing with technology transfer, supply chain management and academic education and is also author and co-author of 7 books and over 100 publications. Furthermore, Dr. Boutellier is a member of the board of the SKU Advanced Management Program as well as member of boards of directors of several Swiss MNCs. Dr. Boutellier’s present research focus is on innovation, technology risks and opportunities as well as purchasing. 5
