Dear Parents
Kia Ora tatou.
As we approach the end of the school year it is timely to reflect on another
successful year and to look ahead to new challenges and initiatives in 2010. This
year Kamo High School experienced significant and unexpected roll growth which
was well over the Ministry of Education predictions. This meant we faced a
number of challenges in terms of staffing and timetabling. It is to the credit of
everyone concerned that these were overcome with very little disruption to the
teaching and learning programmes.
Senior students are currently sitting their NCEA external assessments. In order to try and ensure that these
are given proper focus we have moved our Senior Prizegiving from its usual date of early November to
Monday 7 December. This key event in the school calendar will now be held at Forum North starting at
6.30pm. I encourage all parents of senior students to be there and join with the staff in celebrating the
achievements of our young people.
This year we have celebrated many successes in the Arts, Sport and Culture. The range and nature of these
achievements is evidence of the rich diversity which is Kamo High School. Our commitment to educating
the whole child is also reflected in these outcomes.
Next year we will continue to work toward this goal. The introduction of the Te Kotahitanga Programme of
teacher professional development and the changes to our daily schedule are two initiatives aimed at
raising student achievement, improving academic guidance, and building stronger, more effective
staff/student relationships. The investment of additional time in Whanau class will help provide for
students a significant adult, improved advice and guidance, and more effective communication. This time
will also be used for assemblies and all administrative functions, thus ensuring teaching/curriculum time is
safeguarded.
Over the next few weeks we will hold our Arts and Sports Awards. Congratulations to all those who are
acknowledged at these events. The talent on display at all our school events is remarkable and is a
reflection of the hard work staff and students have put in during the year.
January Mail Out
As most of you will be aware we will be sending out a newsletter in mid‐January 2010, which will contain all
of the necessary information regarding the start of the 2010 school year, including option/fees forms and
stationery lists. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that there may be more than one
option/fees forms and stationery list in the envelope (individually named) if you have more than one child
attending Kamo High School. However, the envelope will only state the eldest child’s name. Please also
advise the office as soon as possible of any change of address during this time.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make 2009 such a successful year for Kamo High School. Have a
safe and relaxing Christmas break.
CLEARANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Seniors
Clearance forms were issued on Monday 2 November 2009.
1 Clearance should have already begun by:
- Paying all outstanding fees
- Returning all borrowed equipment
- Returning all text books
- Returning all library books
- Returning all sports uniforms
- Getting teacher’s signature to confirm clearance for that
subject
2 Senior clearance day is on Tuesday 8 December 2009 ‐ 9.30am to 1.30pm.
All senior students must come to school on this morning to clear (they may wear mufti). If your child
has started a job, please make sure they inform their employer that they are required at school for this
purpose at this time. The Dean will issue end of year reports, year book (and testimonials for Year 13
students) if they have received the “all clear”.
3 If a student is unable to attend on Tuesday 8 December because of another school commitment, e.g.
DOE trip, exam or another circumstance beyond their control (having to work is NOT), they must see
Mrs Delaney with a written explanation and their clearance form as soon as possible.
Juniors
Clearance forms will be issued on Monday 30 November 2009.
1. Begin clearing now by:
- Paying all outstanding fees
- Returning all borrowed equipment
- Returning all text books
- Returning all library books
- Returning all sports uniforms
2 Between Monday 30 November and Friday 4 December students should get their teachers’ signatures
to confirm clearance. If there is a department stamp or an “all clear” they do not require their
teacher’s signature for that subject.
3 If the clearance form is lost, please ask the School Office for another copy.
4 Once the clearance form is “All Clear”, and they are the eldest child at Kamo High School and the Parent
Contribution fee for this year has been paid, students can collect a year book. These will be available at
the School Office at interval and lunchtime from Tuesday 8 December. Students must bring their
clearance form with them.
www.kamohigh.school.nz
5 Once students have completed the clearance process and received their year book, they must hand
their clearance form into their Whanau teacher. If the form is “All Clear” they will be issued with their
end of year report after Year 10 Prizegiving on Wednesday 9 December or Year 9 Prizegiving on
Thursday 10 December.
All library and subject books must be returned to school as soon as possible. Far too many students do
not regard this as important and as result the cost of replacement has an impact on the school budget.
It seems I am always farewelling students. Their time with us passes so quickly. We had a meeting last
Kamo High School and in New Zealand is the highlight of their lives and we are glad to be able to offer this
programme for them.
YEAR 10 CORE CLASS CHANGES
As students move through the school from Year 9 into Year 10, it is sometimes necessary to make changes
to the composition of the core classes. This is done primarily to maintain a balance in numbers but also to
integrate the new students who have enrolled at Year 10. This means there is a likelihood your child may
find themselves in a different core class from the one they were a part of in Year 9. I understand that some
students may find this unsettling to discover at the start of a new school year, but I would urge them to
“take it in their stride” and look for the positive outcomes this change can offer to them.
I look forward to getting to know the students who will be in Year 10 next year, and trust they have a very
rewarding year as they prepare for NCEA in 2011!
LEADERSHIP STUDENTS STEP UP
Several different groups of students from the Whanau Leadership Programme have stepped up into
leadership roles this term. Despite having exams, study and final assignments, the students have worked
on projects they are organising and managing themselves.
The Northland “P” Project is one such project. Designed to raise awareness of the dangers of “P” and its
use particularly in Northland, the students have given their time at Rugby and on Mufti Day to raise money
for the project. Under the leadership of David Tuisaula, 20 students involved themselves in this project.
Another smaller group: Megan, Ben, Barney, Sam, Adelle, Lauren, Sarah and Ashlee, have been working to
develop greater synergy between Senior and Junior students at Kamo High School. They have developed a
plan to work with Year 9 students in Term 1, 2010. This plan involves activities organised and managed by
the Year 13 students from this year’s Whanau Leadership Group.
Jan Menzies – Leadership Co‐ordinator
ARTS DEPARTMENT
The senior school have now left for the year, we wish them all well for their exams. To those Year 13’s
who have left to become part of the big world we send all our best wishes, we look forward to hearing
in the future of your success in your chosen fields.
As the school year winds down the Arts Department is still
very busy. We have junior students preparing performances,
costumes and props for their up and coming “WOW”
performances, which will be held on Wednesday 25 and
Thursday 26 November in A6 at the Arts Department, starting
at 7pm. There will be a gold coin entry fee. Make sure you are
there as it will be a great night with our young students
showcasing their talents.
Some of the junior Drama and Music students travelled to Sky City in Auckland on the 19 November to
watch the performance of Oliver; this was a terrific opportunity to watch theatre at its best.
Finally don’t forget the “ARTS AWARDS EVENING” to be held on Friday 4 December in the Kamo High
School Arts Department Drama room. Starting with a walk through at 6.30pm, the main event will start
promptly at 7.00pm. A light supper and drinks will be available. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at
both the School office and the Arts office.
