Dear Parents
Kia Ora tatou.
At the beginning of this term the school welcomed our new Assistant Principal,
Ms Jacqui Tyrrell (pictured right). Jacqui comes to us from Rotorua Girls’ High
School and her key portfolio pertains to student welfare. I know that you will
ensure that Jacqui and her partner are welcome in our community. We are very
fortunate in having gained her services as she has an enormous amount to offer
our school.
Events can creep up on us very quickly. The World Cup Rugby Final is on 23 October – approximately
nine weeks away. The NCEA external assessments are 11 weeks away. The All Blacks have been
planning and preparing for this event for a long time. They have a clear goal and are focused on
achieving it. The planning, practice and analysis will hopefully lead to success. The same is true for our
students as they approach their finals. Senior exams are in Week 5. These are very important as part
of the build‐up. They provide an opportunity to practice the skills and knowledge required for success,
then to reflect and analyse the outcome. As parents we need to be like an All Black’s fan; supporting
our students, cheering them on and backing them to win. As a coach we must have rules and
expectations as we guide our students to perform to their potential.
The school is doing everything it can to ensure our students succeed. The combination of teacher,
parent and student working together makes success even more likely.
Year 9 to 12 students will soon be issued with their option sheets for next year. It is vital that students
select the subjects that best serve their goals and take the time to talk to their teachers and parents
before finalising their course of study for next year.
The NZQA recently undertook a full review of our assessment policies and practices. They confirmed
that the school has excellent processes of assessment, moderation and reporting. Staff have worked
hard to ensure we have confidence in our marking and that our students are given the same
opportunities to succeed as their peers in other schools.
We are also working to improve student punctuality and attendance. There is an obvious correlation
between high levels of attendance and high levels of student achievement. Please ensure your son or
daughter is at school every day ready to work, unless there is a very good reason to be away. If we get
the basics right everything becomes so much easier.
SENIOR EXAMINATIONS
Senior Examinations are from Thursday 1 st to Friday 9 th September. These are very important because in some
cases there are assessments from which students can gain credits and others are practise for external
examinations. The practice examinations results can be used for derived grades if your child is unable to attend
any externals as a result of serious illness, where a medical certificate is required or death of a family member.
Therefore it is in their best interests to make every effort to study hard to gain the best possible results in the
examination.
Elaine Delaney – Assistant Principal (Teaching & Learning)
NCEA
All students who are sitting external assessments at the end of the year have been given a sheet to check all of
those standards and to ensure that the list is correct. All parents must sign this form and it is then to be
returned to the Whanau Teacher by 24 August. If you have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting
the school.
If a student wishes to be withdrawn from an external standard they must in the first instance seek guidance and
permission from their subject faculty leader.
University hostel applications
This is a very busy time! University hostel applications are now open and students should be applying online as
soon as they can. Once they have applied, they need to print out a copy of the Confidential Referees Report
form for me to finish completing. I would like to have all reports in to me by the end of this month, please.
Applying for university programmes
Students can now start applying online for the degree (or diploma) programme they want to study. To avoid
disappointment, please make sure that you have checked the closing dates for applications because some close
quite early (eg Bachelor of Music at Auckland Uni closes on 1 October). Apply to at least two universities just in
case your first choice does not work out.
Money, money, money…
Now is the time to get onto www.studylink.org.nz to work out projected costs and income. Check out whether
your son/daughter is eligible for a scholarship – the universities have this information on their websites. There
are also scholarships available for those students endorsed with excellence or merit at NCEA level 2, those who
have participated in leadership, sport or cultural activities and for high‐achieving Maori/Pacific students.
Subject Handbook 2012
This will be available on line from Friday 26 August 2011. There will also be hard copies in school.
Please do not hesitate to email, phone or make an appointment to see me to discuss any of these important
matters.
CAREER NEWS
Option selection
When choosing subjects it is important to keep career options open, assess abilities and interests, research
subject areas and future pathways as well as a reality check both of abilities and labour market trends. Many
people also find it difficult to succeed in an area they are only partially interested in. There should be a valid and
researched reason for every one of your option classes. It is often advisable to stick with Maths, Science and
English as these are prerequisites for many career areas and then try to have a broad range of subjects in case
you change your mind later on.
The website www.careers.govt.nz has many interactive tools and is a great source of relevant and up to date
information. This includes areas such as: Plan my career; How to get a job; Jobs database; Skill matcher; Jobs by
interest; Subject matcher; and Education and training information.
If there is a chance you could be going on to tertiary study there may be specific subjects that are prerequisites
so you must check these out. Use the internet and see the Careers or Academic Advisor at school. Appointments
can be booked at the SSC for both in and out of class time. Talk to subject teachers, Whanau teachers, Deans,
parents, and the SSC careers team as well as accessing the school subject handbook.
Student Absences
If your child is going to be away from school, please ensure that you contact the school office on telephone 09‐
4351688 (or text 027 751 3277 or email absences@kamohigh.school.nz) to let us know first thing each day. The
office has an answer phone, and you can leave a message outside of school hours.
In the case of illness, please make sure that you ring each day your child is sick, as children recover at different
rates and for your child’s safety we need to know whether to expect them at school or not. Please also note
that medical absences for periods of three days or more require a medical certificate upon your child’s return to
school. Thank you.
PATHWAYS:
The Rugby World Cup is coming! Can you score a part time job? All Pathways students will be working on
learning how to “Cold Call”, how to create a CV for a “Cold Call” and Interview Skills.
There is nothing like having a part time job to make our students understand how hard it is to earn a dollar. BUT
they must not put in so many hours that they can’t do their studies and can’t do sport and so on. It’s all about a
busy, balanced life!
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – ‘The Future Now’
The Photography Department at Kamo High School is among the best in Northland and is once again showcasing
its talents with their exhibition ‘The Future Now’. On Saturday the 17 September at 3:00pm the Level 3
Photography classes are presenting some of their best and most creative works at the Delucca Café, 6/8 Rust
Avenue. “We have been working hard all year to develop our photography skills and Miss Evitt is always
encouraging us to experiment and try new techniques,” said Year 12 student Greer Campbell. Unlike other
schools that offer Photography as a subject, Kamo High not only offers Digital but also Analogue Photography
which uses film and darkroom procedures rather than computer technology. “Analogue Photography is far
more fun than Digital, there is nothing more satisfying than placing a blank photo in the chemicals and after all
your effort seeing it come out perfect,” said another Year 12 student, Madison Brownlee.
The exhibition will be on display for two weeks from Saturday 7 September
and will be open daily ‐ Tuesday to Sundays from 9am ‐ 3pm.
AUSTRALIA TRIP (TOURISM/GEOGRAPHY)
When I think about our amazing trip the first thing I think of is sun, shopping and a lot of travelling. Then I start
remembering the blur of excitement, the little details. With tons of fun new experiences we were never bored.
We even got a little taste of flatting and trust me, it was great! In the thrill of it all we were off at Movie World
learning about the backstage, going on the Superman Rollercoaster (seven times) and meeting the stars (most
importantly Bugs Bunny). And at Wet ‘n’ Wild testing our courage, getting that huge adrenalin rush we all crave
and relaxing in the spa. We couldn’t have done it without our amazing teachers: Ms Baker, Mr Reynolds, Miss
Goldie and the parent helpers who made it possible. A huge thank you also to our sponsors, Noel Leemings in
Cameron St, who allowed us to have two barbeques at the front of their store, and Nando’s in Vine St who
arranged a fundraising meal package for us. We really appreciate the support and commitment to help us make
the trip happen. So the next time you decide to head off to Brisbane, I highly recommend taking a cook book,
lots of cash and a little bit of carefree New Zealand with you.
LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
Congratulations to Zac Doar who has received an AFS (American Field Scholar)
Language Immersion Award for 2012. This is a fully funded scholarship for going
overseas on an exchange for between 5 – 6 months in a foreign country.
Zac studies two languages at Kamo High School and therefore has the choice of
going to a French or Spanish speaking country. With 329 million native speakers,
Spanish ranks as the world's No. 2 language in terms of how many people speak it
as their first language. There are 14 countries in the world that have Spanish as
their official language. 29 countries list French as their official language and
French speakers are ranked 15 – 17 th in the world with 68 million native speakers.
This gives him a possibility of going to more than 43 destinations!
www.kamohigh.school.nz
Nicola Perkins – Year 13
Zac’s dream since Year 9 has always been to learn as many languages as he can. He has taken numerous steps
towards achieving this goal which is now finally being realised. Zac says “I still can’t believe that I am going, I am

eally excited and can’t wait for this amazing opportunity to come through, Thanks AFS!” The thing he is most
looking forward to is being immersed in another school and experiencing a different culture.
Zac’s aim for going on this immersion award is to aid his promising career in languages. “I want to use what I
learn overseas in my future”. If you wish to study a language at Kamo High School then there are always great
opportunities available to you. Some future career roles of interest to Zac are to become a translator,
interpreter or even a diplomatic officer. BRAVO ZAC AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY!!!!!!!
LEADERSHIP CAMP – ‘Element’
www.kamohigh.school.nz
Karen Baker – HOD Languages
On 15 April a group of Year 12 students went on the first of three leadership camps at Koru Creek in Ngunguru.
“The atmosphere on camp was just amazing! Here you were with 20 other teenagers you never thought you
would be friends with, all working together and trusting each other as if you were siblings,” said Beka Malone,
Year 12 participant. It was on this camp that the idea of ‘Element’, a student run leadership group dedicated to
making a positive difference in the school and the community, was created. The name chosen represents the
four tribes (Fire, Water, Air and Earth) that the students were put into for their stay at the camp.
Incorporating the knowledge they learnt at camp, they presented their ideas to the rest of the groups. After a
little opposition in the beginning, their ideas were put into motion, with the rest of the groups backing them.
Since being established in April, ‘Element’ has achieved many great things, the latest being The Paperclip
Challenge. Each tribe started with a paperclip and they had to trade for bigger and better things ‐ the tribe with
the best item at the end won the game. The tribe Air was the most successful, ending up with two televisions,
after having traded various items throughout the course of the week. “The game was about making the right
choices and learning from our mistakes. It was a great learning experience,” said Siobhan Scrivener, a Year 12
student involved in the competition.
Other notable events ‘Element’ has been involved in are the tree planting day at Taiharuru and the Gay –
Straight Alliance Group, helping to make a positive difference to the future.
came back to NZ with a gold medal, coming first in her category, 16‐17 year old – Under 48kg Kumite, for
fighting. A great achievement for Zara, who has been working hard at her karate for 4 years.
Her next goal is “to be selected for the Worlds Championship and do well”. Good luck Zara!
ARTS DEPARTMENT
It’s hard to believe we are more than half way through the year already. One good thing, we are heading for the
warmer weather and longer days.
Our senior Arts students are working hard towards their final assessments and exams.
Photography:
Photography senior students are holding an exhibition in Deluca Café, Rust Ave opening on 17 September and
running for two weeks. These works are a summary of their year’s work. This will be well worth a look.
A group of senior Drama and English students travelled to Maidment Theatre in Auckland to experience an
explosive collaboration of Shakespeare’s “Othello”, performed by the Peach Theatre Company.
On 18 August Drama students will have the opportunity to see the Aranui Theatre Company from Christchurch
perform “Macbeth”. A number of the actors are regulars on the ‘Erin Simpson Show’ as well as ‘What Now’.
This will be held in A06 starting at 9am at a charge of $2.00 per student.
Drama productions will be held on the evening of Tuesday 20 September ‐ all welcome. All the performances
HOCKEY
The season is just over half way for our hockey teams. The Boys and Girls 1st XI teams are travelling down to
Napier and Dunedin respectively for Tournament Week. On behalf of the boys team I would like to thank
Warren Litchfield, Elaine Delaney (also coach of the Girls 2nd XI), Delwyn Clements and Sheryl Riceman for their
work coaching and managing this team.
The Kamo High School 1 st XI Girls’ hockey team would like to acknowledge the support of B J and J L McKenzie
for their support this year. Mr & Mrs McKenzie have purchased the girls a set of thermal shirts to be worn
during their National Hockey Tournament in Dunedin in August. Thank you very much for your support.
Also we would like to acknowledge all the dedication and expertise of our coach Steve Shepherd and look
forward to a very successful trip away. Tune in next newsletter for the report.
RUGBY ‐ JB9s
Congratulations to Quentin Cherrington, Brett Snell, Mike Ganley, Steven Morris, Jason Pompey for coaching the
KHS 2nd XV Rugby team to the finals ‐ Saturday 13 August at and against Ruawai. It was a hard fought season
with a few problems along the way, but everyone pulled through. Continuous hard trainings have led the teams
build up to the finals. The people in this team have amazed many, especially the 1st XV with their gutsiness and
ability to pull off difficult wins. We are graced with many outstanding young rugby players with promising
futures. A selection of players has made representative squads for Whangarei and Northland from this team:
Caleb Houltham, Nick Riceman, Mohi Harris‐Otene, Jamie Goodwin, and Luke Errington. Congratulations to
everyone who helped this team out through the year. It is much appreciated.
MID‐WEEK FOOTBALL
The season is nearly at an end for mid‐week football. Our Girls 1st XI team played Tauraroa Area School in a
Semi‐final on Wednesday and won 5 ‐ 1. They will go on to play Whangarei Girls’ High in the final next week.
Thank you to Rod Hawker and Rob Olsen for putting in the coaching man hours and Lisa Halvorson for her
management. All of our other teams have finished, the 1st XI Boys making their run a little late and missing out
on playoffs, but are working hard to be ready for Tournament Week. Thank you to Mr Smith for stepping up to
take these guys to tournament and to Aaron Blundell and Simon Wilkinson for their coaching throughout the
season. The 2nd XI boys became a force to be reckoned with, finishing third in the second division, very unlucky
not to make the final. Thanks to Mr Ganess for taking these boys on and show promise of being a very good side
next year. Both the Girls 2nd and 3rd XI teams showed a lot of heart, some talent and sheer determination in a
combined girls competition with the top sides. Huge thanks to Mr Humpage, Mr Furrell and Sheryl Riceman ‐
our standout manager of the year. We look forward to hear how the girls and boys do at Tournament Week.
NAME: Zara Wech AGE: 16 years
SPORTS: Karate
REP HONOURS:
2010 New Zealand team ‐ Oceania, fighting Kumite 0‐48 kg
14‐15 years, won a silver medal
2011 New Zealand team ‐ Commonwealth, Kata and
fighting Kumite 0‐48 kg 16‐17yrs, won a gold medal.
MY LONG TERM GOAL IS….
To be selected for Worlds and do well.
THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING MY SPORT
IS….
When you represent your country you get to
travel overseas. Also travelling to Nationals in
Wellington. I also enjoy the close relationships
you make with the other team members.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I HAVE
LEARNED ABOUT TRAINING IS…
To train hard ‐
"Train with dedication, compete with
expectation" ‐ on my coach's wall.
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE I HAVE OVERCOME
IS …
Training a lot and trying to control my nerves.
www.kamohigh.school.nz
I THINK I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE….
I can get really determined which may help to
be successful in whatever I am doing.
MY PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR…..
Winning gold in fighting at Karate
Commonwealth in Sydney 2011.
I'D JUST LIKE TO THANK….
My coach, my Mum and Dad and other family
members and friends for their support.
IN 10 YEARS I SEE MYSELF…..
Being rich! Achieving well in an enjoyable
career.

NAME: Turanga Shelford‐Morell AGE: 17 years
SPORTS: Rugby League / Rugby
REP HONOURS:
Northland U18s Swords / Northland U18 Rugby
U18s Kiwi NZ team
I FIRST REALISED I HAD SOME TALENT
WHEN…..
Rugby at the age of 10
and then at 17 I started to play Rugby League.
MY LONG TERM GOAL IS….
To have a contract for a NRL team and
represent my country for NZ kiwis one day.
THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING MY SPORT
IS…
The gears! The opportunity to represent my
country and to be able to make a career of it.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I HAVE
LEARNED ABOUT TRAINING IS…
To train specific for your sport and most of all to
train correctly.
THE BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED…."
Leadership from the top down will make us
winners from the bottom up!"
THE PERSON I MOST ADMIRE IS…..
Greg Inglis and Jason Nightingale.
www.kamohigh.school.nz
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE I HAVE OVERCOME
IS …
Peer pressure of drugs and alcohol.
I ONCE DISCOVERED THAT WHATEVER YOU DO
….. In life you must always remember who you
are and where you come from. And no matter
what happens in life the key is to be happy in
what you have.
IF IT WASN'T FOR ….
My girlfriend the peer pressure would have
affected my sporting dream.
Also the support from my family.
MY PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR…..
Is to be named in the U18 Kiwis New Zealand
team.
I'D JUST LIKE TO THANK….
My Father and Mother and also my whole
family, and my Portland coaches, Sam Te Namu
and Lyndsey.

ROBERT DOUGLAS‐GREEN
Robert is continuing his success with a win at the Junior Championship held at the Norfolk Island International
Championships. He also scored the 3 rd highest score out of all the shooters in the competition. This was held
recently in July. Earlier in the year Robert competed in the World Archery Championships, Australia, in his division,
gaining a 6 th placing. He is a star to watch!
MATT DAVIES
Has been selected into the U18 Northland team for Rugby.
MATT BURNS AND ZARA WECH
Both represented New Zealand in the commonwealth Kata and Fighting Kumite tournament in Australia in the
holidays, Zara winning a gold medal.
KEELEY JOHNSON
Made the Northland Men’s Hockey team and has been competing in Wellington in the NHL series this past week.
LAURA DOUGLAS
(Teacher at KHS) Playing and Captain of the Northland Women’s Hockey Team in Wellington for the NHL series.
She also celebrated her 100th cap for Northland this week.
CJ AND LEVI ‐ NEW ZEALAND VOLLEYBALL REPRESENTATIVES
It was a great tournament and the best opportunity, the vibe that you got from everyone there was just positive and
made you really want to be there! Being the only New Zealand team over there beside our girls’ team and U21 Mens
meant there were a lot of Australian teams wanting to beat us. We ended up with a lot of respect from not only the
male but also female teams from how we played ‐ and that was real good motivation.
I think this is the best opportunity I have had in my life. I never thought I would make a NZ team when I first started
three years ago but I did so anything is possible if you want it enough.
'Take every opportunity as it comes'.
BY: CJ WYATT
Levi Walters CJ Wyatt
CJ Wyatt and Levi Walters have just returned from Australia where they represented their country in the Australian
State Champs and then in a Trans‐Tasman tournament. CJ in the U17 and Levi in the U19 Men's teams. Kane
Turketo also qualified as a non‐travelling reserve for the U17s. We would just like to congratulate these boys ‐all
their hard work at training has surely paid off. Look forward to seeing their progress next year.
