COMMONWEALTH KARATE CHAMPION Zara Wech, Year 11, competed over the holidays in the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Sydney and came back to NZ with a gold medal, coming first in her category, 16‐17 year old – Under 48kg Kumite, for fighting. A great achievement for Zara, who has been working hard at her karate for 4 years. Her next goal is “to be selected for the Worlds Championship and do well”. Good luck Zara! PAST STUDENTS Zara Wech on the Podium in Sydney Selina Veltman ‐ Young Credit Professional of the Year 2010 At a glittering event held in Auckland on 7 July ex‐Head Girl, Selina Veltman, won the NZ Young Credit Professional of the Year Award. The Award, presented by the NZ Credit and Finance Institute, honours the best of the best in the credit and finance industry sector. Selina was absolutely astounded at winning the award and thought being nominated and getting into the finals was cool and would look great on her CV! ARTS DEPARTMENT It’s hard to believe we are more than half way through the year already. One good thing, we are heading for the warmer weather and longer days. Our senior Arts students are working hard towards their final assessments and exams. Photography: Photography senior students are holding an exhibition in Deluca Café, Rust Ave opening on 17 September and running for two weeks. These works are a summary of their year’s work. This will be well worth a look. Visual Art: Visual Art students are all working on their folio boards for external exams. Drama: A group of senior Drama and English students travelled to Maidment Theatre in Auckland to experience an explosive collaboration of Shakespeare’s “Othello”, performed by the Peach Theatre Company. On 18 <strong>August</strong> Drama students will have the opportunity to see the Aranui Theatre Company from Christchurch perform “Macbeth”. A number of the actors are regulars on the ‘Erin Simpson Show’ as well as ‘What Now’. This will be held in A06 starting at 9am at a charge of $2.00 per student. Drama productions will be held on the evening of Tuesday 20 September ‐ all welcome. All the performances are by New Zealand playwrights: Level 1 Takes Two Level 2 Eating the Wolf Wheelers Luck Level 3 Absurd Theatre Cow by Jo Randerson Fold by Jo Randerson Dance: Senior Dance assessment night will be held on Wednesday 17 <strong>August</strong> in A06. ‘Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance’ ‐ Carl Sandburg Music: A drum performance by a very talented young drummer was held in A06 which proved very popular with the students. Our two successful Rockquest Northland finalists, “Smoosh” and “Holy Shark”, were both placed in the top twenty in the finals. Congratulations to both groups, a great effort. Request from the Arts Department….if anyone has an old free standing wardrobe they would like to donate, we would be very appreciative, just let us know.
