Nokia Asha range of affordable smartphones, Nokia Lumia
smartphones based on Windows Phone and localised services
like Nokia Life.
Nokia was established over 150 years ago and has evolved from
a riverside paper mill in south-western Finland to a global
telecommunications leader connecting over 1.3 billion people.
The company's longevity, as well as its ability to reinvent itself, is
partly responsible for the success of the Nokia brand.
When it comes to mobile communications, Nokia is a pioneer in
the industry, bringing many “firsts” to market. Nokia
established Mobira in 1979 and the Mobira Senator was the
first car phone back in 1982. Nokia was also the first to bring
camera technology to mobile phones, an innovation that we
continue to drive today by constantly pushing the boundaries of
what is possible in the imaging space. In 2002, Nokia launched
the first ever 3G phone, the Nokia 6650. Nokia also developed
SMS (short message service) which fast became the standard for
mobile text services.
This pioneering spirit, backed by great engineering, saw Nokia
register more patents than any other industry player. It also
meant that many people's first mobile phone was a Nokia, and
our phones were durable and reliable.
The Nokia office in Nigeria was established in late 2005, and
serves as the hub for our business across West and Central
Africa. By employing and nurturing local talent, Nokia is able to
tap into local insights and build products, services and
marketing campaigns that are relevant. These include our new
Nokia prides itself on being a responsible corporate citizen. Our
approach to sustainability is twofold – environmental
sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Nokia, which
was ranked ninth in Interbrand's Best Global Green Brands
survey in 2013, ahead of all its peers in the mobile industry, is
also one of the world's top 10 companies when it comes to
climate change disclosure and performance, according to a
report from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
In Africa, we have always taken the approach that we must
contribute back to the communities in which we operate..
Notable projects in West Arica include: Nokia Education
Delivery system in Nigeria which provides rich content via a
mobile phone to underserved schools; Nokia's sponsorship of
Junior Achievement Ghana which aims to foster
entrepreneurship amongst secondary school students; Mobile
Maths Senegal which uses a mobile phone to deliver maths
content aligned to the local curriculum to learners; and the
Implementation of the Nokia Life English Learning initiative in
partnership with UNESCO.
Another area that Nokia is committed to is enabling the local
mobile innovation ecosystem. This involves working with many
stakeholders including government departments, developers,
content owners, investors, brands and providing opportunities
for local entrepreneurs to thrive in the mobile space.
Nokia boasts some of the brightest talent in the market, a
fantastic corporate culture driven by passion and respect, a
commitment to research and development and an ability to
delight consumers. By combining all of those factors, we see the
next 150 years of Nokia being just as exciting as the first.
