If becoming or retaining the status of a working model is your ultimate goal, it's time to get real! If becoming or retaining the status of a working model is your ultimate goal, it's time to get real. One of the first things you should ask yourself is whether you’re simply modeling for fun or do you have the drive and desire to make modeling a career for yourself. In short, if modeling is a career move you want to make, then you have to start acting like a professional. Don’t forget, this is a business. The most important image in your portfolio is your head shot; the image that can make or break your career, meaning getting signed to an agency. Your head shot is the first marketing tool you ever use to get industry work. Before you can ask another person ( agency, manager or company) to invest time, energy or money in getting you work, the first investor in your career should be yourself. Yes, that’s right beautiful people, don’t expect to get free head shots. You get what you pay for and it also lets others know how serious you are about your career. This is why it’s important to pay for quality. When you pay for a professional photographer, you are able demand the result you feel best represents ‘you’ as a brand. That means turn off the iPhones, no Instagram selfies (or worst Instagram profiles as a modelling portfolio), and nochoosing an amateur photographer just figuring out his/ her gear just because its free. If it looks bad, you look bad. DON’T DISTRACT US Less is best. Apply little or no makeup; we’re going for a natural look. Your hair should be either pulled all the way back to show your face or kept natural (don’t straighten or curl). Agencies want to see the real you! Wear a solid color shirt or tank top. Don’t wear distracting patterns such as poka dots or stripes. DON’T TRY TOO HARD No need to over self your self. We all can tell if you’re over-posing. Simple is perfect. Head shots are just the beginning to what you can do. You want to give a variety of different facial expressions. Doing so allows others to know that you are comfortable in front the camera. Camera phones & selfies won’t cut it! LIGHTING MAKES PER- FECT Do you want natural light or studio light? They both are going to give your image a different feeling. This is something a professional photographer is going to understand. The best lighting is the kind that enhances the natural color of your skin tone. The biggest difference is the source of light - strobe vs. sun. Strobe lighting you’ll find inside any basic to professional studio. Lighting from a strobe gives a consistent amount of light and helps to hides flaws and unwanted tension in the face. The disadvantage to studio lighting is that sometimes images can come off looking too staged - artificial. The one problem with natural sunlight is trying to find enough of it (from clouds) or having too much that it causes the subject to squint their eyes. The eyes should always be the center focal point of any headshot, and how they are illuminated can make all the difference. If there isn't enough light, then they appear dead and don't radiate from the screen or page. If there is too much "catch" light—the reflection of the light source in the eye—they lose vividness and the color washes. WHAT’S YOUR ANGLE? Everyone has a best angel - their best side. Its going to be different for everyone. Take a minute to look in a mirror and look for yourself; is it the left or the right or even straight on? The right angle can be that money shot or the wrong angle can add 10-15 pounds. QUIT BEING CHEAP Often in life you get what you pay for. Depending where you live, good head shots can cost anywhere from $200 to $1,200. When you pay for an image you have the power to control the result that you want to get- since you're paying, you're the boss. Don’t go the photographer that’s just figuring out his/her new gear and wants to test on you. Do your research and remember experience means everything when it comes to your portfolio. Check out their website. If they don’t have one, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can. A good photographer will only help to capture and enhance your look.
