Wells Fargo is offering free resources for students who are preparing for college. The Financial Aid Journey in 5 Steps is an easy-to-follow guide that navigates parents and students through the financial aid process in five simple steps – including comparing award letters. CollegeSTEPS® magazine provides students and parents with articles, tips, and resources for planning and paying for college. If you could use some extra help planning and preparing financially for college, Get College Ready resources provide interactive college planning tools, calculators, and other resources students can use as they plan, prepare, and get ready for college in the fall, which can be found by visiting http://wellsfargomedia.com/GetCollegeReady. The Hands on Banking® program is a non-commercial financial education program featuring information for students about real-life scenarios that can help them build a strong foundation for a healthy financial future (found at http://handsonbanking.org). Between April and June, 2014, students can stop by a local Wells Fargo location and pick up their complimentary college planning resources. Students are the future employees and customers of the businesses that serve the communities in which we live and work – their success is important to all of us, and it is why Wells Fargo makes these resources available. College/Community Programs & Events Northwest Florida State College’s Forensics (Speech & Debate) Team is hosting an Open Debate Night on Thursday, April 10 th , 2014, from 6:30-8:30 PM in Classroom S-110 at the NWFSC Niceville campus. All students are welcome. No experience is necessary. Debate the current hot issues. Bring a debate partner – there will be two against two debates. Awards will go to the top three teams. If you’re looking for scholarship opportunities, enjoy traveling for free, and you would like to be a part of a very challenging, but fun team, consider joining the Northwest Florida State College Forensics Team! A full scholarship is available for qualified team members. In order to be qualified for the scholarship, students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and be registered for at least nine (9) semester hours and participate in at least two tournaments per semester. You and your family are invited to attend an Open House on the Virginia Military Institute Post this year! The remaining 2013-2014 Open House dates are April 11 th -12 th , 2014. SCAD Days are special visitation days that enable students and their families to explore the facilities and academic programs, meet faculty, get a taste of SCAD classroom settings and student life, discuss financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and begin the enrollment process. With the help of the SCAD Day Concierge, students can design their visitation day to suit their unique interests. Upcoming SCAD Day in Atlanta, GA, is April 12 th , 2014. The Health Care Summer Institute is a summer camp designed to encourage minority or rural disadvantaged students to pursue health career opportunities and to build a plan of success for their future. It is a 4-week session that will take place from June 15 th , 2014 – July 12 th , 2014. Selected participants will live in the University of Florida campus dormitories, shadow health care professionals, attend educational lectures and programs, and participate in social activities. The students will also attend an intensive SAT Prep course. The students will be supervised full time by counselors, a camp coordinator, and a camp director. Students will be selected based on GPA, an expressed interest in a health profession, maturity level, desire for post high school education, completion of the application process, and recommendations. The only cost that the student will be responsible for is personal spending money, a $50 commitment fee, and transportation to and from the University of Florida. To be eligible, students must be Seniors or Juniors during the 2014-2015 school year (Juniors and Sophomores currently), minority or rural and disadvantaged, have at least a 2.5 GPA, have teacher recommendation, guidance counselor recommendation, and completion of all registration requirements. The Law Related Education Committee of The Florida Bar presents a YouTube Contest featuring The Legal Guide for New Adults! All high school students are encouraged to participate individually or in teams of up to five people. Students may choose their video topic from any of the subjects discussed in the Legal Guide for New Adults. To access the Legal Guide, read the contest rules and details, and complete the entry form, go to www.floridabar.org/lrecyoutube. Video entries need only be 2-4 minutes in length. Judging criteria are as follows: originality - 35%; theme adherence - 35%; clarity of message – 20%; video quality – 10%. 1 st place will receive $500 and an engraved plaque, 2 nd place will receive $250 and an engraved plaque, and 3 rd place will receive an engraved plaque. Submissions must be received at the address provided on the entry form and must be postmarked by April 15 th , 2014. Auburn University announces their 2 nd Annual REAL Cents REAL Change® Summer Residential Camp, which will be held June 15 th – 20 th , 2014. Participants will experience campus life, leverage their talents and skills to benefit others, learn to create a lasting legacy, and feel confident about managing money at any stage of life. The Fort Walton Beach Panhellenic Alumnae Association will be writing recommendations for local girls starting college in the fall and interested in joining a sorority. The FWB Panhellenic Alumnae Association will not host an “Information Party” this spring due to low attendance in the past. Local girls interested in the recruitment process for membership in a national sorority can find more information online at www.fwbpanhellenic.org/Recruitment_Sororities.html or they may pick up an information packet from Ms. Brewer in Room 1C02 or Ms. Bernich in Guidance. The Emory University Pre-College Program is a summer academic program for high school students. It gives college-bound rising Juniors and rising Seniors an exciting glimpse of academic and residential life at a topranked national university. <strong>High</strong> school students may explore topics with professors who are the leading experts in their fields, enroll in classes with college students, and earn transferable college credit. Two-week non-credit courses, three-week non-credit institutes, and six-week credit courses are available.
