From the Chancellor<br />
Another school year has come and<br />
gone and the gradu<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> the class <strong>of</strong> 2011 are moving on to a new chapter in their<br />
lives. Commencement is always a joyful time, but also a little bittersweet for faculty and<br />
staff as students we’ve gotten to know and care about leave us. A UAM commencement<br />
is a wonderful occasion and also a source <strong>of</strong> pride for not only our gradu<strong>at</strong>es, but their<br />
families and friends as well. This year we made UAM’s gradu<strong>at</strong>ion experience available<br />
online by video-streaming both ceremonies over our website. It marks<br />
the first step in an effort to make more significant events available to<br />
online viewers who may be unable to come to campus. Plans are already<br />
underway to provide video-streaming <strong>of</strong> special events such as our<br />
Rockefeller Distinguished Lecture Series, music the<strong>at</strong>re productions and<br />
concerts, the Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame Banquet, Alumni Homecoming Dinner and<br />
on-campus <strong>at</strong>hletic events.<br />
We will soon be providing more inform<strong>at</strong>ion about video-streaming<br />
and other campus inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> interest to you in a new way. July 1,<br />
the university will begin publishing an<br />
E-newsletter with the l<strong>at</strong>est news upd<strong>at</strong>es about the campus and your<br />
fellow alumni. If you wish to receive this e-newsletter, make sure our Office <strong>of</strong> Alumni<br />
Affairs has your current e-mail address. You may contact them <strong>at</strong> withers@uamont.edu.<br />
I would be remiss if I didn’t discuss with you the tuition increases we reluctantly<br />
implemented <strong>at</strong> the last meeting <strong>of</strong> the UA Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees. With our oper<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
budget remaining level due to no new money from the St<strong>at</strong>e, combined with our record<br />
enrollments <strong>of</strong> the last three years, we were forced to make small adjustments to the cost<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tending the university. We are still among the least expensive four-year st<strong>at</strong>e institutions<br />
in <strong>Arkansas</strong> and one <strong>of</strong> three whose tuition and fees are covered completely by<br />
current Pell Grant funds. UAM will always be committed to keeping <strong>at</strong>tendance costs as<br />
low as possible to ensure educ<strong>at</strong>ional opportunities for future gener<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
Because <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> commitment, we will continue to emphasize the vital importance <strong>of</strong><br />
priv<strong>at</strong>ely funded scholarships. We were able to present 815 awards during the 2010-11<br />
fall and spring semesters worth $328,816 due to the generosity <strong>of</strong> so many alumni and<br />
friends. These priv<strong>at</strong>e scholarships are no longer a luxury but have become an essential<br />
part <strong>of</strong> providing ways for our students to afford a college educ<strong>at</strong>ion. Your Alumni Associ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
dues support several awards each year.<br />
On a positive note, the institution has received permission to begin <strong>of</strong>fering a master’s<br />
degree in Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and Coaching which will be <strong>of</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> benefit to our<br />
coaching gradu<strong>at</strong>es in all sports.<br />
