DAN GERSTMAN
From the President
There’s an old adage which jokes that “the Jewish Holidays are never
on time—they’re either early or late” which makes me wonder about
how we as a people count time? In the Bible, they talk about the year
beginning with Nisan, the month of spring and Passover, but nowadays
we celebrate Rosh Hashanah during the month of Tishrei in the
fall? What’s up with this? I will leave it to Rabbi Warmflash to clarify
this and so many other questions for us at his Talmud and Bible
Classes and in the weekly sermon.
Getting back to the “early or late” issue, in 2010, be ready for
EARLY! The first Seder of Passover falls on March 29 and if you think this is early, wait
until Rosh Hashanah! Think Labor Day and you will be close to Rosh Hashanah this
year! But first to the Passover Seder. The word “seder” translates as “order” and I must
say that during my first year as HERJC President, I have been struck by the importance
of “order” in a synagogue’s daily existence.
The annual cycle of daily Jewish life takes on an order of its own. Then there is the
variable part like preparing the agenda for a Board of Directors meeting where we work
hard planning for HERJC’s well being, mapping out exciting upcoming events like our
60th Anniversary Diamond Gala Dinner Dance honoring Liz and Harold Kislik or the
weekly task of reviewing the honors for Shabbat service.
It’s so important to properly align and order the packed schedule of events that
makes Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre such a wonderful place for our community
families. And it’s always the right time to say thank you to everyone who gets
involved and supports our efforts to keep our synagogue “in order” with the vital
resources we need to serve our community today and well into the future.
At our Passover Seders, we use the language of the Haggadah to take us through the
order of events. As we go around the table with anticipation and participation, the story
is told! We listen to the words of our Exodus from Egypt and recall our own liberation.
The words expand our horizons, help us view our current circumstances more favorably,
and imbue our lives with love, insight, and spirit. We can look around the table
and know that this holiday came at just the right time in our lives—it always feels great
spending precious time with family and friends—the true treasures in our lives.
Throughout this Passover and spring season, may you and your family enjoy health
and peace and may your cup always be filled with priorities that bring you joy and
comfort!
From the Rabbi’s Study
RABBI ANDREW WARMFLASH
I am convinced that, apart from the Torah, no part of our Bible has
had a greater impact on Judaism than the Book of Psalms. Not only
is it the basis of much of our liturgy, it has the remarkable capacity
to give voice to some of our deepest emotions and most profound
longings. It is no exaggeration to say that the Psalms are the “soundtrack”
to the life of any observant Jew.
For those who know them well, the words of the Psalms can
reflect and amplify our feelings at some of the most important
moments in life. I can remember cradling my newborn daughter in
my arms for the first time, just moments after she was born. My heart was filled with
an overwhelming sense of joy as the words of Psalm 118 arose in my mind: “Zeh hayom
asah Adonai, nageela veh nismecha vo...This is the day that God has made, let us rejoice
and be glad.”
Some years later, during the eleven months when I said kaddish for my father, some
words from Psalms 30 and 148 which are recited in the early morning service became
a kind of lifeline for me: “Tears may linger for a night, but joy returns with the
dawn…Adonai heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.” It is hard to overstate
the comfort these simple words brought me as I recited them each morning.
To better acquaint members of our community with the riches of the Psalter (Book
of Psalms), I will be offering a new Adult Education series that will begin after Passover
and focus on the meaning of those Psalms which are recited most frequently during our
prayer services. The class will meet following minyan at 7:45 pm on three consecutive
Thursday evenings: April 15, 22, and 29.
I hope you will join me on this spiritual adventure into one of the great treasures of
our tradition.
Fly with HERJC for the Children of Haiti
By the Flyer Family and Friends
In light of the profound devastation and destruction from the recent earthquake in
Haiti, my sister, brothers, close friends the Siegel’s, and HERJC have joined together to
raise money for the children of Haiti. As you may know, there are a large number of
orphans in Haiti. Now, more than ever, these children and the orphanages they live in
need our help.
Through many avenues, we will be raising awareness about this tragic situation. We
humbly ask for your help and support. Please donate whatever you can in the form of
a check payable to HERJC. Every 2 weeks, HERJC will send a check to Save the
Children—a respected and established charity that is working closely with the children
and orphanages in HAITI. (100% of your donation will be put to good use).
If you are interested in joining the team or becoming a corporate sponsor,
please e-mail us at flyforthechildren@gmail.com.
PASSOVER
PESACH GUIDE
The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz (leaven) during Pesach. Therefore, we arrange for the sale of the
hametz to a non-Jew. The transfer, mechirat hametz, is accomplished by appointing an agent, usually the Rabbi, to
handle the sale. It is valid and legal transfer of ownership. At the end of the holiday, the agent arranges for the
reversion of ownership of the now permitted hametz. If ownership of the hametz was not transferred before the
holiday, the use of this hametz is prohibited after the holiday as well (hametz she-avar alav ha-Pesach).
Since the Torah prohibits the eating of hametz during Pesach, and since many common foods contain some
admixture of hametz, guidance is necessary when shopping and preparing for Pesach.
During the eight days of Pesach, hametz cannot lose its identity in an admixture. Therefore, the minutest amount
of hametz renders the whole admixture hametz and its use on Pesach is prohibited. However, during the rest of the
year, hametz follows the normal rules of admixture, i.e. it loses its identity in an admixture of one part hametz and
sixty parts of non-hamtez (batel be-shishim). This affords us the opportunity to differentiate be tween foods purchased
before and during Pesach.
What follows is a general guideline. However, your Rabbi should be consulted when any doubt arises. Kosher
le-Pesach labels that do not bear the name of a Rabbi or one of the recognized symbols of rabbinic supervision, or
which are not integral to the package, should not be used without consulting your Rabbi.
Prohibited foods include the following: leavened breads, cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereal, coffees containing cereal
derivatives, wheat, barley, oats, spelt, rye and all liquids containing ingredients or flavors made from grain alcohol.
Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniyot) to the
above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and peas, however, string beans are
permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously
that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible. Some Ashkenazic authorities permit,
while others forbid the use of legumes in a form other than their natural state, for
example, corn sweeteners, corn oil, soy oil. Sephardic authorities permit the use of
all of the above. Consult your Rabbi for guidance in the use of these products.
PERMITTED FOODS
a) The following foods require no kosher le-Pesach label if purchased prior to
Pesach: unopened packages or containers of natural coffee without cereal additives,
(however, be aware that coffees produced by General Foods are not kosher for Passover unless marked KP), sugar, pure
tea (not herbal tea); salt (not iodized), pepper; natural spices, frozen fruit juices with no additives; frozen (uncooked)
vegetables (for legumes see above), milk, butter, cottage cheese; cream cheese; ripened cheeses such as cheddar (hard),
muenster (semi-soft) and Camembert (soft); frozen (un cooked) fruit (with no additives); baking soda.
b) The following foods require no Kosher le-Pesach label if purchased before or during the Pesach: fresh fruits and vegetables
(for legumes see above), eggs, fresh fish and fresh meat.
c) The following foods require a Kosher le-Pesach label if purchased before or during Pesach: all baked products
(matza, cakes, matza flour, farfel, matza meal, and any products containing matza); canned or bottled fruit juices
(These juices are often clarified with kitniyot, which are not listed among the ingredients. However, if one knows there
are no such agents, the juice may be purchased prior to Pesach without a Kosher le-Pesach label); canned tuna (since
tuna, even when packed in water, has often been processed in vegetable broth and/or hydrolyzed protein—however,
that one must DISPOSE OF all his pastry, flour, sugar, etc. for the full week. Imagine
what havoc this would cause the baker, manufacturer, wholesaler or any ordinary
household! The Rabbis concluded that the leaven may not BELONG TO YOU during
the week of Pesach. Therefore, if it is sold to a non-Jew, the prohibition no longer
pertains. This, then, became the prevalent practice, though usually with the stipulation
(or tacit understanding) that the non-Jew “sell it back” after Pesach. Since,
however, it is much too cumbersome for each Jew to perform such trans actions
individually, the next step was to empower one person—usually the Rabbi—to act as
agent for the entire community.
be used to help
those in need.
While charity is a
mitzvah at all
Our Honorees – Liz and Harold Kislik
The Kisliks have been a happy HERJC family for 18 years, since they sent David,
now 21, to our Nursery School. Sophie, 11, has had the same privilege and now
attends our Religious School. Harold serves on our Board of Directors and chairs our
Ritual Committee. Liz has served on numerous committees, and despite her current
status as Immediate Past President, is still serving on quite a few. Liz has been deeply
involved in our organizational structure, and over the last few years, in addition to
the quotidian responsibilities of signing checks and chairing meetings, she presided
over Rabbinic, Cantorial, and Administrative transitions and remained optimistic
and forward looking during the depths of the recent financial crisis.
Both Liz and Harold maintain busy lives in whatever time HERJC leaves available.
Harold serves on the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Board and is a board member
and past president of the Five Towns Early Learning Center (formerly Five Towns Child Care Center) in Inwood.
Liz's management consulting practice, Liz Kislik Associates LLC, works with businesses of all sizes and segments to
raise the bar for customer and human relations, and Liz serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of the Direct
Marketing Educational Foundation, whose mission is to attract, educate, and place top college students in the business
of direct/interactive marketing.
Both Liz and Harold are dedicated
to ensuring that HERJC
is a welcoming, engaging spiritual
home. As committed
Egalitarian Conservative movement
Jews, they love to attend
services to pray, to catch up on
community news, and to see
their friends, and you can often
hear them laughing and
singing from the back row.
Liz and Harold are so grateful
to Terri and Steve Gold for
their immense appetite for
chairing Dinner Dance and
their loving natures; to Dan
and Pam Gerstman - Dan for
being such a terrific President
and Pam for being willing to
hang on for the ride—and to all
the professionals and volunteers
who are working so hard
to make this Dinner Dance a
wonderful evening and fantastic
success for our remarkable
our jewish future
nursery school
CHERYL KARP
“If we are to achieve a richer culture,
rich in contrasting values, we must recognize
the whole gamut of human
poten tialities, and so weave a less arbitrary
social fabric, one in which each
diverse human gift will find a fitting
place.”—Margaret Mead
Throughout my years as an early
childhood educator and director, I’ve watched many
changes in preschool education. One of the biggest
changes in recent years is the realization of just how
many children have special needs. Our school is blessed
to have teachers who are working hard to understand
the neuro-developmental level of each child. The staff is
also working with parents and specialty teachers who
come to our school daily so that we can meet the learning
needs of each child, enhancing their strengths and
preserving their hope for their future. Due to our educational
policy of inclusion, we as a staff have grown as
professionals.
Most of our classes have become inclusion classes.
Inclusion refers to the commitment to educate each
child, to the maximum extent possible, as equal members
in a society in which all children are given the
same opportunities to reach their potential. Inclusion is
not simply about placing a child with special needs in a
regular classroom. Inclusion, according to Susan Astor,
M.S. Special Education, is about how we deal with
Nursery School Registration Open
Summer Camp Too!
599-1169
diversity in our society and how we deal with, or avoid
dealing with, our own differences, weakness, and fears.
Our parents and the entire staff are in agreement that
early intervention in our nursery school is critical.
Many of our staff members have taken workshops to
learn how to detect when children seem out of sync in
class. We have learned how to include parents in our
daily observations of their child and when needed,
encourage parents to go for a full neuro-developmental
screening. In recent years, our teachers have gone to
meetings with a variety of specialty teachers from the
child’s school district so that a course of action appropriate
to the child’s needs could be met. We therefore
have many occupational, speech, and physical therapists
coming to our school to service the child who
needs physical, emotional, social or educational help.
I have watched children who were non-verbal at the
beginning of the school year develop their speaking
skills through therapy and have full conversations with
their friends at the end of the school year. There were
children who did not have a clue how to interact with
other classmates and were taught these skills by their
occupational therapists. By the end of the year these
children had developed close friendships. It is so heartwarming
to all of the staff to watch the slow and steady
growth of children who might have struggled through
their elementary school years had they not been part of
a nursery school that believed in early intervention and
inclusion. We are certain that the years children spend
at our nursery school become a strong foundation for
their future success in school, their development of selfesteem
and their ability to relate to people in their lives.
The process of inclusion and the encouragement of
each individual child allow each person to develop his
or her talents or gifts. Our staff has come to realize that
the greater the diversity in our classes the richer our
capacity to create a more humane and caring society. We
are committed to continue our own learning of how
each child takes in information and functions so that
each child will find success in life.
DAVID WOOLFE
Rabbi Zusya, when he was an old man, said, “In the coming world,
they will not ask me: ‘Why were you not Moses?’ They will ask me:
‘Why were you not Zusya?’”
With the wisdom and goodness of Rabbi Zusya in mind, I am very
pleased to announce that we are enlarging our already award-winning
Religious School program to include Jewish education for children
requiring a modified curriculum.
Beginning this fall, we will offer two classes: one on Monday for
students in 5th and 6th grades and the other on Tuesday for students
in 2nd through 4th grades. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who
are in inclusion/resource room in public school or in a self-contained classroom in a
mainstream setting and may have found it difficult to balance the demands of public
school and the Religious School program as it currently exists.
We will be adding trained professionals to our faculty in order to make this program
a success. I am very excited to be able to offer this program. I believe it will benefit our
students, our families, our Religious School and our synagogue.
I look forward to letting you know more about this program as we go forward. In the
meantime, if you have any questions, please be sure to contact me at 599-0424 or email
We Remember the Six Million
Yom HaShoah Commemoration at HERJC
Thursday, April 8 at 7:30 PM
It’s been 65 years since the Holocaust ended. As the years pass,
and fewer and fewer survivors remain, it becomes even more
important to keep this memory alive. That’s why we encourage
every family in the Congregation to join us for our annual Yom
HaShoah commemoration, to light a Yellow candle on Sunday
evening, April 11 and to explain to their children the significance
of the candle. Sadly, in America today, 20% of high school
students have no knowledge of the Holocaust.
