Amazingly simple
and wonderful.
notes from the hazzan
DAVID B. SISLEN
More so than at any time of year, the High Holidays are a time when
the nusach, the system of melodies which is used in our tradition to
chant specific pieces of the liturgy, truly defines the texts of the service,
lifting them off the page in a way that gives the words added
meaning and depth. The changes are first evident on Selichot night,
when many of the unique sounds of the service are reintroduced,
only to be echoed throughout the entire Yamim Noraim period. It
makes perfect sense that the music of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur services is unique to these holidays; since the liturgy itself is
different in both text and quality, it is fitting that the melodies should be, as well. In
some cases, such as the pleading Kaddish of the Neila service, we use melodies that are
only heard once a year, befitting the singularity of these texts in our annual cycle. But
in many cases, the subtleties of the complex musical structure of the services rushes by,
being felt by the congregation in terms of changes of mood or style, but not lasting long
enough for a thorough analysis. As we head into Yamim Noraim 5772, I thought I
would take a few moments to give a taste of what’s going on behind the scenes of our
rich High Holiday liturgy.
THE MA’ARIV (EVENING) SERVICE — Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur eves are the
only time in our tradition that the Ma’ariv service is chanted in a Major key (in our
familiar Lithuanian tradition). The familiar refrains of these services, introduced by the
“Ay ay ay….” melody before Barchu sets a grand, celebratory, and one-of-a-kind tone
for the entire Holiday period.
MALCHUYOT, ZICHRONOT, AND SHOFAROT — The three sections of the Rosh
Hashanah Musaf service deal with the themes of God’s Sovereignty, Memory, and the
Shofar, respectively. The way each is introduced is unique to the themes of the section.
Malchuyot (Sovereignty) is introduced with the Great Aleinu, a majestic melody which
is shared with the beginning section of the Amida itself. After setting this mood for the
Malchuyot verses, the Zichronot (Memory) section opens in a more introspective
Minor, reflecting the warmth of memory, and the prayerful hope that we will be remembered
for Good. Finally, Shofarot begins back in Major, and in most settings of the opening
paragraph, it is not unusual to hear, appropriately, the sound of the Shofar being
echoed subtly in the music.
KOL NIDRE — The keynote text which introduces the Yom Kippur evening service has
become an annual focal point for Yamim Noraim services, in a way which belies its
actual role in the service, which is to nullify vows made carelessly or under duress
which would be otherwise unbreakable. Its role in this most dramatic service has made
it synonymous with the official start of the atonement process. The familiar melody that
we use, while not universal (a quick web search can give you a taste of how Kol Nidre
sounds in other traditions), reflects the entire process of Teshuvah, repentance. It
begins in the Ahavah Rabah mode, a mode that is used to set a mood of pleading,
HAKOL

From the Rabbi’s Study
RABBI ANDREW WARMFLASH
The Book of Numbers is largely concerned with the 40 years our
ancestors wondered in the Sinai wilderness after they received the
Torah and before entering the Promised Land. It begins with a physical
description of the Israelite camp. Explaining that each time the
people encamped, the Levites erected the portable tabernacle in their
midst and all the other tribes arrayed themselves around it. In the
center of everything was the Ark containing the Torah that Moses
brought down from the mountain.
The symbolism is clear: The Torah is meant to be at the center
of Jewish life. It is the beating heart of the Jewish people, pumping out the spiritual
energy that sustains us and renews us.
Yet for many contemporary Jews, the Torah is something of a closed book—an
ancient text we respect, but don’t engage very much, if at all.
This year, we want to change that in our Jewish community. We have declared the
New Year of 5772 to be: HERJC’s Year of Torah and have planned an unprecedented
number of programs, classes, and experiences which will engage our entire congregation
in Torah.
The centerpiece of this effort will be the writing of a new Torah scroll that we will
use for generations to come. This Sefer Torah is largely being written for us by a scribe
in Israel, but all of us, and our children and grandchildren will have an opportunity to
actually physically participate in the writing.
In this issue of Hakol, you can see just a few of the many Torah centered programs
that will be coming up at HERJC in the next couple of months. They include: our
Selichot program which considers the story of Cain and Abel from the perspective of
law and order in contemporary America; our Scholar in Residence weekend of Torah
Study with Rabbi Eliezer Diamond of JTS, our Sukkot Torah Fair for the whole family
and lots more.
The coming High Holidays are a time for renewal and rededication. This year may
we all renew our people’s ancient historic commitment to putting the Torah in the center
of our lives, and rededicate ourselves to living joyous meaningful lives guided by its
teachings.
Shalom friends! Summer is over and the new congregational year is
about to begin. As I begin my 22nd year here at HERJC, I would like
to take a few moments to recall some summer events: a hearty yasher
koach to all those individuals who gave inspirational d’vrai Torah
and recited haftarot. To all those who attended our Shabbat afternoon
services and seuda shlisheit, not only did they enjoy good
company, good food, and good conversation, they also helped make
sure there was always a minyan on a late Saturday evening.
Incidentally, there were on average, at least 20 people, each week.
On July 4th, we held our annual Bagel Barbeque Breakfast. The weather was perfect
and our garden provided a lovely setting. Thirty five people came and we all enjoyed
patriotic music, good company, and of course patriotic themed food, catered by my wife
Hannah, who was assisted by Carol Rubinstein and Rhona Tanenbaum.
Thank you to all those who helped Hazzan Sislen make sure there was always a minyan
while I was away on vacation, in particular Norman Doctor, and Mike Frank.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank many people who have in their own way,
helped me in my work during the past year: Rabbi Warmflash and Hazzan Sislen, for
their continued support; Helaine, Betsy, Eva and Nancy—thanks for putting up with
me for another year; Cheryl Karp, David Woolfe, and Todd Hausman for being great
colleagues; James and the maintenance staff for all your willing help; President Dan
Gerstman, thank you for having confidence in me; and our Ritual Committee for all
your encouragement and support.
A special thank you to the minyannaires, that wonderful group of individuals who
attend morning minyan throughout the year. And finally, to the most important people
of all: you, the members of our congregation. Thank you for allowing me to serve you
in any way I can. To those of you who celebrated a simcha, mazal tov, and to those of
you who sadly suffered a bereavement, I wish you chaim aruchim (long life).
Hannah, Ariel, Avital and I thank you for continuing to make us feel part of the
DAN GERSTMAN
From the President
I have always been intrigued by the concept of “a beginners mind.”
By that, I mean the ability to experience life as-it-is. To live in the
moment, with a fresh perspective no matter how many times one
repeats an action or event, is fascinating. For me, a beginner’s mind
experiences life like a small child, full of enthusiastic curiosity, wonder,
and amazement.
As we join together for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and follow
with Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, I prefer to do
so with “a beginners mind.” The Jewish New Year offers a new beginning
filled with so much hope and spirit to each of us! We gather as a community family
for individual reflection and self-examination, knowing we are a continuing part of
the greater Jewish people. This year, we will experience the holidays in HERJC’s welcoming
tradition, led by Rabbi Warmflash who has new inspiring directives for us individually
and collectively. And of course, with Hazzan Sislen, coming off an outstanding
rookie year, who will lead us in prayer and song from our marvelous and (nearly new)
Holiday Prayerbooks! As we embark on this New Year of 5772 together, we face exciting
opportunities and challenges. My hope and goal is that HERJC will thrive as the
place where we are supportive of each other (through good and bad), the place where
we can express our spiritual yearnings, and the place where we connect to our Jewish
traditions and maintain our support of Israel.
And speaking of Israel, led by Rabbi Warmflash and an enthusiastic group of volunteers,
under our HERJC Cares umbrella, we have an Israel Action Group who will “create
a climate that leads to advocacy for Israel via a program of education and awareness”.
It has been quite wonderful to watch as we gain momentum with our support of
Israel during a time when it is obvious that our beloved Israel has never needed us
more! Also, we continue to add enthusiastic participants to our HERJC Cares committee
as we comfort those in need right here in our community, visiting congregants who
would like companionship and driving congregants in need to medical appointments.
We also plan to take the wraps off a brand new program this year called Mitzvah 613!
There are so many unbelievably talented individuals already preparing a very meaningful
year that will fill our lives with opportunities to connect to Torah. For the vast
majority of us, this will be the first opportunity to fulfill the 613th commandment
which is to write a Torah. It also allows us to educate, dedicate, and contribute in so
many ways that will become apparent as the New Year rolls out. I urge everyone to be
a part of Mitzvah 613 as it will bring great joy to you and your family and will allow us
to come together as a community with great meaning!
Mitzvah 613 will allow the children of our Early Childhood Center and Religious
School to connect to Torah as well. This year we experience our first full year as a PJ
Library Jewish Centre, which affords us the ability to send free books (monthly) to
Jewish families with children ages 6 months to 6 years. With PJ Library and other bright
new ideas, we create a vision that allows us to improve and sustain our schools and to
begging. In the middle of the text, the scale rises to Minor, where it adopts a gentle, but
less mournful feel. And finally, it concludes in a triumphant Major. These three musical
moves reflect the three steps of Teshuvah; mournful as we realize the substance of
our misdeeds, gentle as we resolve to right the wrongs and affect change in our lives,
and finally the joy at having been successful in our efforts, receiving the forgiveness and
These few examples are but a few of the dozens of apt marriages of unique music to
unique texts in the Machzor. My hope is as we daven together this Yamim Noraim and
make the journey toward Teshuvah together once again, that you will be aware of how
the special music of the High Holidays sets the stage for an annual unique and dramatic
HERJC forms Israel action committee
We have formed a committee to create a climate that leads to advocacy for Israel via programs of education and awareness.
This is NOT about raising money, but rather finding a means for people to get involved in specific actions that
will help us support Israel from here. Each program will have a component of information or entertainment and a
component that embraces “so what can I do?”
Our first program will be on September 15 at 7:45 pm at the synagogue. Our featured speaker will be David Ze’ev,
diplomatic and political correspondent for Israel Radio. David’s topic will be “Stop Apologizing”, discussing Israel’s
feeling of being under fire literally and figuratively and feeling that it has to defend itself. Coincidently, this program
will take place during the same week the UN will be taking up the issue of Palestinian statehood. Following David’s
presentation, a representative from APIAC will discuss how we as ordinary citizens can help promote the US-Israel
relationship.
Please join us for this important event. It will be a wonderful way to get an inside view of what is going on and a
tangible way for us to show our support for Israel.
Stop Apologizing
Israel Under Fire Diplomatically and Fighting Back!
Thursday, September 15 at 7:45 pm at HERJC
Insight and analysis from the corridors of power in Israel, how decisions are made and
the personalities of those who make them. ALSO: How can ordinary citizens influence
the US–Israel relationship? Hear from America’s pro-Israel lobby about ways that each
of us can make a difference
THE HERJC NEILAH
TRADITION
The last Service of Yom Kippur is
called Neila, the “Service of the Clos -
ing of the Gates.” As twilight fell on
Biblical Jerusalem, the gates of the
Temple were closed. Neila signals the
end of the period of repentance and
we are reminded to enter the Gates of
Repentance before it is too late. Con -
gre gants are invited to come up on
the Bima while the Ark is open, for a
short, personal prayer. The service
ends with one mighty blast of the
Shofar. Bring your Shofar and join us.
social outreach
Sisterhood News
LAURIE STONE BROFSKY
Are you thinking what I used to
think? Well, think again—this is
NOT your Bubbe’s Sisterhood!
We’ll remain relevant to members of
our congregation, young and not so
young, as we transition through life
as Jewish women in the 21st century.
After all, so many of the things
we’ll do are intergenerational—
they cut across time and age and continue to bind us
together. Like preparing for holidays. Reading and discussing
books. Making head coverings. Knitting. And
playing mah jongg, too. Isn’t it amazing how these
oldies but goodies are on the popular pastime list for
everyone now?!
Our Sisterhood won’t confine ourselves to the things
we were “allowed” to do or simply to the traditional
things women used to do. This year, we will do what
only WE can do—provide programming to educate and
empower WOMEN, be that in financial planning or
Torah study—with, of course, a women’s perspective!
As far as we have gotten in society, women still have a
long way to go, here and everywhere. We need to help
each other get there, to realize our potential, our worth.
Yes, Sisterhood is synonymous with women’s issues;
we’ll bring programs and lectures toward this end. But
remember, too, that women’s issues manifest themselves
during book discussions, around the mah jongg
tables, while creating head coverings, and in the course
of collecting warm clothing and delivering necessities
to the food pantry. And as we work and play together,
we learn from each other. Sisterhood serves as the support
for women as they transition from home to work
to home again—daily or over a lifetime—providing
intellectual stimulations as well as recreation.
This is an exciting year for our Synagogue and an
exciting time for Sisterhood as well. Look for our membership
information in the mail and join us. Participate
in any or all of our varied programs and activities
designed with women in mind. Know that together we
will grow with, learn from, play alongside and provide
support for each other.
L’Shanah Tovah. To a fantastic year!
our jewish future
nursery school
CHERYL KARP
Welcome back! When my children
were younger, I watched a TV show
with them that they loved and I
thought gave wonderful messages in
appropriate and non-threatening
ways. I would not have watched this
show on my own; however it was
great for kids and starred a huge,
purple dinosaur. Some of my friends
commented that I was letting my children watch a show
that was too childish! Imagine that!
This was bad enough until my oldest daughter came
home from kindergarten crying. She loved Curious
George, and one of the kids said Curious George was
for babies. My heartbroken daughter almost gave up on
George but finally realized it was okay to like something
different than others.
I was saddened by that child’s reaction and worried
about a dangerous trend in our country: Children today
are far more sophisticated than in the past. They are ex -
posed to more sexual and violent images, and more news
of terror and hate than any generation before them.
Children today are also pushed harder academically.
Recess is given away to more reading and writing classes,
even though there is evidence that children who are
forced into intellectual activities for which their brains
are not ready, and denied outlets for free play, become
adults who are insecure, lack imagination, and are not
anymore successful in life than those who went through
their childhoods in an age appropriate manner. A rather
disturbing article appeared in the New York Times last
May which discussed the inappropriateness of tutoring
three-year-olds so they would “make” the proper city
schools. We are causing stress among our children and
insecurity among our parents.
The Book of Genesis and Rashi, one of the greatest of
Biblical commentators, have great insight into this
dilemma. According to the story, when God created
Adam and Eve, God put them in the Garden of Eden
and told them they could eat anything they wanted in
the garden except the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge
of Good and Evil. They do eat the fruit and are expelled.
Was God setting them up for failure? According to
Rashi, God did intend for them to eat of the tree but
only when they were ready. Adam and Eve acquired
knowledge of good and evil much too early in their
development. While they learned there was good and
evil in the world, they lacked the ability to determine
which was good and which was evil. They had a lot of
information but no way of processing it.
We are seeing increases in levels of children with
behavioral and learning issues. Perhaps it is because
researchers are paying more attention to children in
general. Or perhaps it is a result of not letting children
be children. A child is not merely an unfinished adult. A
child is a unique being with his or hers own needs
which do not necessarily conform to adult expectations.
Unfortunately, in our society, hundreds of children live
in great poverty and have great difficulty keeping up in
school. Even in wealthy families, children are left alone
for hours with no adult supervision with predictable
results. Media is filled with language that would make
the average person blush. Schools stress academic
achievement over imagination and slow and steady
growth. People without children should be equally concerned.
This is the generation that is going to lead us
one day, or perhaps not, depending on what kind of
adults they become. We need to find a way to celebrate
childhood, not treat it like a liability. Every child
deserves a real and safe childhood. It is a gift that if
taken away, is gone forever.
Thank you for entrusting your child to us. We look
forward to a year in a safe, healthy environment where
your children can enjoy their childhood and grow at
their own pace.
Top Ten Reasons to Join
the HERJC Youth Circus
10. The 3 rings of our circus are USY, Kadima, and Pizza Plus!
9. Just like the circus travels all over the country we offer a summer
program that travels from the east to west coast
8. Some circuses travel around the world –our circus can travel to
Israel, and Eastern Europe
7. Some circuses open the doors early so you can view the animals,
try the trapeze, unicycles and juggle. Our doors are always open - come down anytime
to try our great programs
6. Just like the variety of circus acts, we offer a multitude of program to participate in,
such as sports, arts and crafts, social action and tikun olam events, Israeli programs
and just plain fun!
5. Just like the animals have trainers to train them, the terrific youth leaders and staff
will train you in leadership skills that are so needed in the future
4. The circus is fun for all ages so come down and find the group that’s best for you
3. Some circuses offer a side show - our side show would be our divisional kinnusim,
dances, conventions and many other divisional and regional events
2. Just as in the circus, you can find food and snacks at each event
And the number 1 reason to join HERJC Youth Group . . .
DAVID WOOLFE
Whew, that was one hot summer! I hope you and your family
managed to enjoy a fun, healthy summer while not getting too overheated.
Before the next Hakol, I’m sure we will all find ourselves
bemoaning the cold weather and longing for next summer. But
before we get too far ahead of ourselves . . . we are all excited to begin
another year at our award-winning HERJC Religious School, welcoming
students and families who are new to our school and synagogue—and
students who know their way around like old pros!
Our Building Blocks program continues to be an incredible success.
Morah Robin, along with Morah Uli and Morah Nancy, look forward to another
wonderful year with our youngest students. Our Alef class can look forward to a great
year with Morah Gila. Morah Rebecca is already elbow-deep in her planning for a successful
year with her students. Morah Nancy is conjuring new games to make learning
fun and exciting for her students.
Morah Hely and I are looking forward to another fantastic year with our Akiva
students.
Mr. Plotkin is honing his fantastic story-telling skills for his Vav students and so he
can share with our students the weekly parashot and wonder of the Torah narrative.
Speaking of the Torah, this year will be a singular one for our students and families
at HERJC. This year is the “Year of Torah” at HERJC. The process of having a new Torah
written for our synagogue will involve many learning opportunities for our students
and their families. The Torah scribe will be with our students at various times during
the year. In addition, the school will have a number of events and lessons to reinforce
the power and lessons of the Torah.
It is an incredible honor to be part of a congregation as it receives a new Torah.
I urge all of you to actively participate in this exciting synagogue experience as much
as possible—both in the school and synagogue itself. This is our Torah—in every sense.
Let’s embrace it together!
Finally, I am looking forward to a fantastic 8th grade program this year. I will be
teaching a brilliant curriculum that is structured around the Shoah and Israel. I believe
that this will be the year we establish a very successful post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah educational
program that we will continue to build upon.
From strength to strength. Shanah tovah to all. May we all be inscribed in the Book
of Life for a year of health, happiness and community.
I’m looking forward to enthusiastically shaloming all of you once again soon!
