our jewish future nursery school CHERYL KARP “If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human poten tialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.”—Margaret Mead Throughout my years as an early childhood educator and director, I’ve watched many changes in preschool education. One of the biggest changes in recent years is the realization of just how many children have special needs. Our school is blessed to have teachers who are working hard to understand the neuro-developmental level of each child. The staff is also working with parents and specialty teachers who come to our school daily so that we can meet the learning needs of each child, enhancing their strengths and preserving their hope for their future. Due to our educational policy of inclusion, we as a staff have grown as professionals. Most of our classes have become inclusion classes. Inclusion refers to the commitment to educate each child, to the maximum extent possible, as equal members in a society in which all children are given the same opportunities to reach their potential. Inclusion is not simply about placing a child with special needs in a regular classroom. Inclusion, according to Susan Astor, M.S. Special Education, is about how we deal with Nursery School Registration Open Summer Camp Too! 599-1169 diversity in our society and how we deal with, or avoid dealing with, our own differences, weakness, and fears. Our parents and the entire staff are in agreement that early intervention in our nursery school is critical. Many of our staff members have taken workshops to learn how to detect when children seem out of sync in class. We have learned how to include parents in our daily observations of their child and when needed, encourage parents to go for a full neuro-developmental screening. In recent years, our teachers have gone to meetings with a variety of specialty teachers from the child’s school district so that a course of action appropriate to the child’s needs could be met. We therefore have many occupational, speech, and physical therapists coming to our school to service the child who needs physical, emotional, social or educational help. I have watched children who were non-verbal at the beginning of the school year develop their speaking skills through therapy and have full conversations with their friends at the end of the school year. There were children who did not have a clue how to interact with other classmates and were taught these skills by their occupational therapists. By the end of the year these children had developed close friendships. It is so heartwarming to all of the staff to watch the slow and steady growth of children who might have struggled through their elementary school years had they not been part of a nursery school that believed in early intervention and inclusion. We are certain that the years children spend at our nursery school become a strong foundation for their future success in school, their development of selfesteem and their ability to relate to people in their lives. The process of inclusion and the encouragement of each individual child allow each person to develop his or her talents or gifts. Our staff has come to realize that the greater the diversity in our classes the richer our capacity to create a more humane and caring society. We are committed to continue our own learning of how each child takes in information and functions so that each child will find success in life. page 20 MARCH/APRIL 2010 www.herjc.org HAKOL
eligious school DAVID WOOLFE Rabbi Zusya, when he was an old man, said, “In the coming world, they will not ask me: ‘Why were you not Moses?’ They will ask me: ‘Why were you not Zusya?’” With the wisdom and goodness of Rabbi Zusya in mind, I am very pleased to announce that we are enlarging our already award-winning Religious School program to include Jewish education for children requiring a modified curriculum. Beginning this fall, we will offer two classes: one on Monday for students in 5th and 6th grades and the other on Tuesday for students in 2nd through 4th grades. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who are in inclusion/resource room in public school or in a self-contained classroom in a mainstream setting and may have found it difficult to balance the demands of public school and the Religious School program as it currently exists. We will be adding trained professionals to our faculty in order to make this program a success. I am very excited to be able to offer this program. I believe it will benefit our students, our families, our Religious School and our synagogue. I look forward to letting you know more about this program as we go forward. Encampment is an eight day sleep away camp held at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. As a kid, I went to two Kadima and four USY encampments and then returned to camp as staff. I was a bunk counselor, then moved to Boys Head Counselor and as of last year was named Kadima Encampment Director. If you are between sixth and twelve grades and have any questions about this great program, please feel free to contact me.
