Switzerland produces just 3% 

of these watches and only one in 

six of the watches that Switzerland

global watch industry and this share 

is increasing. The finest mechanical 

watches represent precision, 

pioneering craftsmanship, taste 

and a tangible link to the passing of 

time. These are all real values and 

acknowledgment and admiration for 

each of these is lasting. 

2013 bears witness to the giants 

of the watchmaking industry 

consolidating their strengths. 

Rolex’s new sports models (page 

13), the GMT Master II, the steel 

YachtMaster II and the platinum 

Daytona (which celebrates its 

50th anniversary) are all superb 

developments. Patek Philippe, 

the king of complications, present 

emphasis on more contemporary 

styling in this year’s collection. 

The 5205R and the 5960R (page 11) 

with black dials and the subtle new 

styling of the self winding ladies 

Nautilus (page 4) are good examples 

of this and will no doubt attract a 

younger audience. 

The most noticeable development, 

however, is that it is apparent from 

all the major watch houses and 

throughout the fine jewellery world 

that gold is coming back and that 

this time it will be rose gold.

NEW 2012 MODELS 

hile the Panerai brand was 

founded in Florence in 

1860, the Panerai watch 

came into being in the world of the 

depths of the sea. To be precise, the 

depths of the Mediterranean, where 

in March 1936 the commandos 

of the Italian Navy first tested the 

prototype created by Panerai in 

response to the request from the 

General Staff to develop “a special 

luminous underwater watch”. The 

Royal Navy, as it was then called, 

evaluated the creations of many 

established producers, but the 

only example which satisfied all the 

rigorous requirements of the military 

authorities was the one which would 

become Panerai’s first prototype, 

and also, according to many, the 

first professional underwater model 

in the history of watchmaking: the 

Radiomir. 

In the years before the Radiomir 

was created, watches had already 

been made that were water-resistant 

because they had a double case, 

that is, they were inserted in a 

hermetically sealed case, or fitted 

in a screw case that could resist 

the pressure of water to a certain 

depth. But water-resistance alone 

was not enough for the Italian 

military authorities, who required 

a watch which met several other 

requirements that were fundamental 

for the commandos who would 

operate underwater for long periods, 

frequently in critical conditions. 

When the Florentine watchmaker 

Panerai created the Radiomir, the 

company had already been a trusted 

supplier of the Navy for some 

time. In 1938, two years after the 

success of the prototype, it put into 

production the first ten examples for 

ithin this superb 

timepiece with its 

classic lines and pure 

design, the ingenious tourbillon 

mechanism recaptures its initial 

function: that of a device designed 

to further improve rating precision.

which were part of the Italian 

Navy’s Submarine Command. On 

their wrists, over of the waterproof 

suit of rubberised fabric, the 

commandos wore both a watch, 

the indispensable instrument 

for synchronising all wartime 

operations, and other precision 

instruments developed by Panerai, 

such as the depth gauge and the 

compass. 

Equipped only with this vital 

equipment, the divers of the 

Submarine Command carried 

out their operations riding 

slow-speed torpedoes, special 

underwater vessels which carried 

two operators seated astride 

the vessel. On these human 

torpedoes, the commandos 

explored the depths of ports 

in the Mediterranean under 

extremely difficult conditions, 

in the darkness of the night in 

waters which were frozen and 

muddy. They descended 40 

metres below the surface of the 

sea and remained immersed for 

hours, depending only on their 

instruments, which consequently 

had to be guaranteed to provide 

the maximum resistance,

Perpetual Calendar. The Portuguese 

Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 5023) with the

is now also being manufactured in 

the same case size, in red gold with a 

silver-plated dial and in white gold with a

The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is 

available with the classic cut-out moon 

phase display when observed from

satellite waxes onto this miniature stage 

from the left behind the semi-circular 

setting becomes visible in the middle 

as a full moon and wanes on the right 

side behind the second semi-circle. It 

is accompanied on the moon disc by 

small raised stars.

mechanism with grand and 

small strike, minute repeater, splitseconds 

chronograph with minute 

counter and jumping seconds as 

well as a perpetual calendar with 

moonphase display. 

The development of the GRAND 

COMPLICATION is an adventurous 

expedition into the cosmos of 

complexity. The result is a watch 

that is extraordinary in every respect, 

reflecting the brilliance of the Lange 

dynasty’s forebears and the virtuosity 

of today’s watchmakers. 

A sound of inimitable purity 

Two carefully hand-wrought gongs 

produce the seductive tones of the 

minute repeater and of the hour and 

quarter-hour strikes. The GRAND 

COMPLICATION is endowed 

with a chiming mechanism that 

automatically indicates the time in 

the grand strike (grande sonnerie) or 

small strike (petite sonnerie) modes. 

Every fifteen minutes, when set 

to grande sonnerie, it first indicates 

the full hour on the low-pitched gong 

and then the quarter-hours with a 

double strike on both gongs. In the 

petite sonnerie mode, it indicates 

the elapsed quarter-hours with one, 

two, or three double strikes on both 

gongs. At the top of every hour, 

it strikes the time in hours on the 

low-pitched gong. 

It is no coincidence that the 

grande sonnerie is considered to 

be one of the most challenging of 

all complications in watchmaking. 

It imposes extreme requirements 

on the perfect interaction of 

intricate mechanisms crafted from 

materials of the highest quality 

by exceptionally talented and 

experienced watchmakers. “Free, 

with no shake” – that is the mantra 

which governs the interplay between 

moving parts to such a degree 

of accuracy that they deliver a 

precise strike and sound with 

unmatched purity. 

The chiming mechanism is 

powered by one of a total of three 

mainspring barrels. They are wound 

with the crown. Turning the crown 

clockwise tensions the springs for 

the going train and the chronograph. 

The chiming mechanism barrel is 

wound in the opposite direction. 

When the slide in the case flank 

is actuated, the minute repeater 

indicates the time on demand with 

two gongs: The hours sound with 

low-pitched tones, the quarterhours 

with double-tone strikes, and 

the minutes with high-pitched tones. 

At 7:52, for instance, the melody 

consists of seven low tones, 

three double strikes, and seven 

high tones.

The Sea, History, Technology and Design 

W 

hile the Panerai brand was 

founded in Florence in 

1860, the Panerai watch 

came into being in the world of the 

depths of the sea. To be precise, the 

depths of the Mediterranean, where 

in March 1936 the commandos 

of the Italian Navy first tested the 

prototype created by Panerai in 

response to the request from the 

General Staff to develop “a special 

luminous underwater watch”. The 

Royal Navy, as it was then called, 

evaluated the creations of many 

established producers, but the 

only example which satisfied all the 

rigorous requirements of the military 

authorities was the one which would 

become Panerai’s first prototype, 

and also, according to many, the 

first professional underwater model 

in the history of watchmaking: the 

Radiomir. 

In the years before the Radiomir 

was created, watches had already 

been made that were water-resistant 

because they had a double case, 

that is, they were inserted in a 

hermetically sealed case, or fitted 

in a screw case that could resist 

the pressure of water to a certain 

depth. But water-resistance alone 

was not enough for the Italian 

military authorities, who required 

a watch which met several other 

requirements that were fundamental 

for the commandos who would 

operate underwater for long periods, 

frequently in critical conditions. 

When the Florentine watchmaker 

Panerai created the Radiomir, the 

company had already been a trusted 

supplier of the Navy for some 

time. In 1938, two years after the 

success of the prototype, it put into 

production the first ten examples for 

the men of the naval assault forces 

which were part of the Italian 

Navy’s Submarine Command. On 

their wrists, over of the waterproof 

suit of rubberised fabric, the 

commandos wore both a watch, 

the indispensable instrument 

for synchronising all wartime 

operations, and other precision 

instruments developed by Panerai, 

such as the depth gauge and the 

compass. 

Equipped only with this vital 

equipment, the divers of the 

Submarine Command carried 

out their operations riding 

slow-speed torpedoes, special 

underwater vessels which carried 

two operators seated astride 

the vessel. On these human 

torpedoes, the commandos 

explored the depths of ports 

in the Mediterranean under 

extremely difficult conditions, 

in the darkness of the night in 

waters which were frozen and 

muddy. They descended 40 

metres below the surface of the 

sea and remained immersed for 

hours, depending only on their 

instruments, which consequently 

had to be guaranteed to provide 

the maximum resistance, 

reliability, accuracy and legibility.

IWC Celebrates it’s Legendary Portuguese Family

o other time machine 

approaches as close to the 

ideal of a perfect navigational 

instrument in the infinite ocean of time 

as a perpetual calendar from IWC. This 

is particularly true of the Portuguese 

Perpetual Calendar. The Portuguese 

Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 5023) with the 

traditional display of the moon phase 

is now also being manufactured in 

the same case size, in red gold with a 

silver-plated dial and in white gold with a 

slate-coloured dial. 

The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is 

available with the classic cut-out moon 

phase display when observed from 

the northern hemisphere. The Earth’s 

satellite waxes onto this miniature stage 

from the left behind the semi-circular 

setting becomes visible in the middle 

as a full moon and wanes on the right 

side behind the second semi-circle. It 

is accompanied on the moon disc by 

small raised stars.

The coveted Portuguese Tourbillon 

Mystère in two new, limited series 

in platinum and red gold with the 

retrograde date display is enhanced 

by an additional horological 

refinement, which also appears in 

the name of this novelty: Portuguese 

Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde (Ref. 

5044). A date indicator with a flyback 

function at the end of the month has 

been integrated into this exceptional 

watch for the first time. The role of the 

seconds display is performed by the 

cage of the minute tourbillon. 

Since 2009, the Portuguese Minute 

Repeater (Ref. 5449) with the new 

IWC-manufactured 98950-calibre 

movement in hunter style has chimed 

out the time in the most delightful 

way. Since then, it has also had the 

small seconds at “6 o’clock”. Each of 

the two variants in platinum and red 

gold is limited to 500 watches.

designation L1902 incorporates 

scores of lavishly finished parts,

complications which the art of haute 

horlogerie has to offer: Chiming 

mechanism with grand and 

small strike, minute repeater, splitseconds 

chronograph with minute 

counter and jumping seconds as 

well as a perpetual calendar with 

moonphase display. 

The development of the GRAND 

COMPLICATION is an adventurous 

expedition into the cosmos of 

complexity. The result is a watch 

that is extraordinary in every respect, 

reflecting the brilliance of the Lange 

dynasty’s forebears and the virtuosity 

of today’s watchmakers. 

A sound of inimitable purity 

Two carefully hand-wrought gongs 

produce the seductive tones of the 

minute repeater and of the hour and 

quarter-hour strikes. The GRAND 

COMPLICATION is endowed 

with a chiming mechanism that 

automatically indicates the time in 

the grand strike (grande sonnerie) or 

small strike (petite sonnerie) modes. 

Every fifteen minutes, when set 

to grande sonnerie, it first indicates 

the full hour on the low-pitched gong 

and then the quarter-hours with a 

double strike on both gongs. In the 

petite sonnerie mode, it indicates 

the elapsed quarter-hours with one, 

two, or three double strikes on both 

gongs. At the top of every hour, 

it strikes the time in hours on the 

low-pitched gong. 

It is no coincidence that the 

grande sonnerie is considered to 

be one of the most challenging of 

all complications in watchmaking. 

It imposes extreme requirements 

on the perfect interaction of 

intricate mechanisms crafted from 

materials of the highest quality 

by exceptionally talented and 

experienced watchmakers. “Free, 

with no shake” – that is the mantra 

which governs the interplay between 

moving parts to such a degree 

of accuracy that they deliver a 

precise strike and sound with 

unmatched purity. 

The chiming mechanism is 

powered by one of a total of three 

mainspring barrels. They are wound 

with the crown. Turning the crown 

clockwise tensions the springs for 

the going train and the chronograph. 

The chiming mechanism barrel is 

wound in the opposite direction. 

When the slide in the case flank 

is actuated, the minute repeater 

indicates the time on demand with 

two gongs: The hours sound with 

low-pitched tones, the quarterhours 

with double-tone strikes, and 

the minutes with high-pitched tones. 

At 7:52, for instance, the melody 

consists of seven low tones, 

three double strikes, and seven 

high tones.
