NEW 2013 MODELS
Lasting Values Appear Rosy in 2013
E
Charlie
Pragnell
ach year 1.2 billion timepieces
are produced globally.
Switzerland produces just 3%
of these watches and only one in
six of the watches that Switzerland
produces are mechanical. 7
million Swiss mechanical watches
represent half of the value of the
global watch industry and this share
is increasing. The finest mechanical
watches represent precision,
pioneering craftsmanship, taste
and a tangible link to the passing of
time. These are all real values and
acknowledgment and admiration for
each of these is lasting.
2013 bears witness to the giants
of the watchmaking industry
consolidating their strengths.
Rolex’s new sports models (page
13), the GMT Master II, the steel
YachtMaster II and the platinum
Daytona (which celebrates its
50th anniversary) are all superb
developments. Patek Philippe,
the king of complications, present
emphasis on more contemporary
styling in this year’s collection.
The 5205R and the 5960R (page 11)
with black dials and the subtle new
styling of the self winding ladies
Nautilus (page 4) are good examples
of this and will no doubt attract a
younger audience.
The most noticeable development,
however, is that it is apparent from
all the major watch houses and
throughout the fine jewellery world
that gold is coming back and that
this time it will be rose gold.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5227
As a newcomer to the Calatrava
family, a collection that epitomizes
the timeless round wristwatch, the
Reference 5227 stands out with
exclusive styling and a seamlessly
integrated dust cover. Thanks to its
totally invisible hinge, this timepiece
has an elegant, ultra-slim silhouette.
The delicate decor on the lugs
underscores the finesse of the
rose-, white-, or yellow-gold case
that accommodates a self-winding
movement.
Patek Philippe Ref. 7134
Patek Philippe has reinterpreted its
ladies’ Travel Time wristwatch,
endowing it with a new, gently curved
case with delicately worked lugs, a
brown sunburst dial, and applied
Arabic numerals. The two pushers
allow the local time hand to be
corrected by one-hour increments
in either direction. The pierced hand
for home time, synchronized with
the subsidiary 24-hour hour dial,
permanently indicates the time at the
owner’s place of residence.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5216
Already available in rose gold, the
acclaimed Reference 5216 Grand
Complication with minute repeater,
perpetual calendar with retrograde
date and moon phases now comes
in a new platinum version with a
black dial. It has the magnificent looks
that befit such an elegant, highly
complex opus.
Patek Philippe Ref. 7130
Launched in 2011, the Reference
7130 is the feminine version of
Patek Philippe’s famous World Time
watch. With its rose-gold case,
diamond-set bezel, and hand-
guilloched ivory-opaline dial, it
opens up a new realm of colors for
women on the go. The city names
ring complies with the new official
time zone designations.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5396
Patek Philippe presents a new
silvery opaline dial with its latest
Reference 5396 Annual Calendar
for men; it comes with a white-
or rose-gold “drop link” bracelet
first introduced in 1998. The classic
inline day/month double-aperture
display and the date at 6 o’clock
reflect the signature dial architecture
of Patek Philippe calendar watches
from the 1940s and 1950s.
Patek Philippe Ref. 7200
This new Calatrava ladies’ wristwatch
is the embodiment of timeless
elegance, transforming the legendary
officer’s-style case into a feminine
classic. Its grained, cream-colored
dial with applied gold numerals
forms a subtle contrast to the
rose-gold case. The self-winding
movement can be admired through
the sapphire-crystal case back.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5170
Originally presented in yellow
gold in 2010, the Reference 5170
incorporates the first classic
chronograph movement developed
and built entirely by Patek Philippe.
The retro-contemporary timepiece
now comes in a new white-gold
version with a silvery-white dial and
Breguet numerals.
Patek Philippe Ref.7018
The self-winding Nautilus ladies’
wristwatch in stainless steel with
the diamond-set bezel radiates
even more casual elegance with a
dial redesigned exclusively for the
feminine version. The famous Nautilus
embossing is now slightly undulated;
the numerals, hour markers, and
hands are subtly rounded and
somewhat more prominent. Polished
and satin-finished zones alternate on
the bezel and bracelet.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5116
The men’s Calatrava wristwatch
with the Paris hobnail pattern on
the bezel and the genuine enamel
dial ranks among the Genevan
workshops’ style-defining classics.
Its sleek design has been
transposed to a new rose-gold version
that will enchant fans of
this cult model.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5072
The Aquanaut Luce Haute Joaillerie
collection has now been enriched
with baguette diamonds, which
adorn the bezel of a new self-winding
white-gold model. The all-new blue
two-tone dial with the subtle checkerboard
effect is crafted from varnished,
engraved mother of pearl. Secured
with a diamond-set fold-over clasp,
the highly robust strap echoes the
color and structure of the dial.
NEW 2012 MODELS
hile the Panerai brand was
founded in Florence in
1860, the Panerai watch
came into being in the world of the
depths of the sea. To be precise, the
depths of the Mediterranean, where
in March 1936 the commandos
of the Italian Navy first tested the
prototype created by Panerai in
response to the request from the
General Staff to develop “a special
luminous underwater watch”. The
Royal Navy, as it was then called,
evaluated the creations of many
established producers, but the
only example which satisfied all the
rigorous requirements of the military
authorities was the one which would
become Panerai’s first prototype,
and also, according to many, the
first professional underwater model
in the history of watchmaking: the
Radiomir.
In the years before the Radiomir
was created, watches had already
been made that were water-resistant
because they had a double case,
that is, they were inserted in a
hermetically sealed case, or fitted
in a screw case that could resist
the pressure of water to a certain
depth. But water-resistance alone
was not enough for the Italian
military authorities, who required
a watch which met several other
requirements that were fundamental
for the commandos who would
operate underwater for long periods,
frequently in critical conditions.
When the Florentine watchmaker
Panerai created the Radiomir, the
company had already been a trusted
supplier of the Navy for some
time. In 1938, two years after the
success of the prototype, it put into
production the first ten examples for
ithin this superb
timepiece with its
classic lines and pure
design, the ingenious tourbillon
mechanism recaptures its initial
function: that of a device designed
to further improve rating precision.
The Master Tourbillon Dualtime
housing an automatic movement,
Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978B,
displays a second time-zone
on a dial testifying to a degree
of aesthetic perfection that is
inseparable from technical genius.
On this model equipped with a
reworked tourbillon carriage, the
watchmakers of the Manufacture
have made no compromises
regarding its performance,
reliability and sturdiness. The
titanium tourbillon regulator
accompanies a high-precision
automatic precision beating at
28,800 vibrations per hour and
equipped with an unusual and
extremely large balance featuring
an inertia amounting to 11.5 mg
x cm 2 .
As a benchmark in the realm
of Fine Watchmaking, the
Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre
leaves no detail to chance.
Patented by the Manufacture
Jaeger-LeCoultre, the date
indication is adjustable in both
directions and makes a bigger
jump between the 15th and the
16th so as not to obstruct the view
of the titanium tourbillon carriage.
An exceptional timepiece
intended for daily wear, the Master
Tourbillon proves its sterling
qualities of precision, reliability
and water resistance within the
stringent framework of the 1000
Hours Control. This set of rigorous
trials that has become a watch
industry legend now includes
rating regularity and amplitude
measurements relating to the
tourbillon regulator, including under
conditions involving small impacts.
Mechanical inventiveness
is matched by aesthetic
refinement: the pink gold case
is a halfmillimetre smaller to suit
all wrists. While the 41.5-mm
diameter has remained the same
to maintain absolute harmony with
the dimensions of the tourbillon,
the lugs and bezel are distinctly
more slender and streamlined. An
alligator leather strap with a gold
pin buckle set the finishing touch
to the Master Tourbillon Dualtime
fitted with a sapphire crystal
caseback revealing the secrets
and traditional Fine Watchmaking
finishing of a prestigious Jaeger-
LeCoultre that holds the world
record for precision timing.
the men of the naval assault forces
which were part of the Italian
Navy’s Submarine Command. On
their wrists, over of the waterproof
suit of rubberised fabric, the
commandos wore both a watch,
the indispensable instrument
for synchronising all wartime
operations, and other precision
instruments developed by Panerai,
such as the depth gauge and the
compass.
Equipped only with this vital
equipment, the divers of the
Submarine Command carried
out their operations riding
slow-speed torpedoes, special
underwater vessels which carried
two operators seated astride
the vessel. On these human
torpedoes, the commandos
explored the depths of ports
in the Mediterranean under
extremely difficult conditions,
in the darkness of the night in
waters which were frozen and
muddy. They descended 40
metres below the surface of the
sea and remained immersed for
hours, depending only on their
instruments, which consequently
had to be guaranteed to provide
the maximum resistance,
reliability, accuracy and legibility.
o other time machine
approaches as close to the
ideal of a perfect navigational
instrument in the infinite ocean of time
as a perpetual calendar from IWC. This
is particularly true of the Portuguese
Perpetual Calendar. The Portuguese
Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 5023) with the
traditional display of the moon phase
is now also being manufactured in
the same case size, in red gold with a
silver-plated dial and in white gold with a
slate-coloured dial.
The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is
available with the classic cut-out moon
phase display when observed from
the northern hemisphere. The Earth’s
satellite waxes onto this miniature stage
from the left behind the semi-circular
setting becomes visible in the middle
as a full moon and wanes on the right
side behind the second semi-circle. It
is accompanied on the moon disc by
small raised stars.
he GRAND COMPLICATION
features a host of fascinating
functions and yet again
manifests the ability of the Saxon
master watchmakers to conquer
ever new peaks with their
undisputed ingenuity. Beneath the
lucidly configured enamel dial, the
horological opus with the calibre
designation L1902 incorporates
scores of lavishly finished parts,
bringing to life the most elaborate
complications which the art of haute
horlogerie has to offer: Chiming
mechanism with grand and
small strike, minute repeater, splitseconds
chronograph with minute
counter and jumping seconds as
well as a perpetual calendar with
moonphase display.
The development of the GRAND
COMPLICATION is an adventurous
expedition into the cosmos of
complexity. The result is a watch
that is extraordinary in every respect,
reflecting the brilliance of the Lange
dynasty’s forebears and the virtuosity
of today’s watchmakers.
A sound of inimitable purity
Two carefully hand-wrought gongs
produce the seductive tones of the
minute repeater and of the hour and
quarter-hour strikes. The GRAND
COMPLICATION is endowed
with a chiming mechanism that
automatically indicates the time in
the grand strike (grande sonnerie) or
small strike (petite sonnerie) modes.
Every fifteen minutes, when set
to grande sonnerie, it first indicates
the full hour on the low-pitched gong
and then the quarter-hours with a
double strike on both gongs. In the
petite sonnerie mode, it indicates
the elapsed quarter-hours with one,
two, or three double strikes on both
gongs. At the top of every hour,
it strikes the time in hours on the
low-pitched gong.
It is no coincidence that the
grande sonnerie is considered to
be one of the most challenging of
all complications in watchmaking.
It imposes extreme requirements
on the perfect interaction of
intricate mechanisms crafted from
materials of the highest quality
by exceptionally talented and
experienced watchmakers. “Free,
with no shake” – that is the mantra
which governs the interplay between
moving parts to such a degree
of accuracy that they deliver a
precise strike and sound with
unmatched purity.
The chiming mechanism is
powered by one of a total of three
mainspring barrels. They are wound
with the crown. Turning the crown
clockwise tensions the springs for
the going train and the chronograph.
The chiming mechanism barrel is
wound in the opposite direction.
When the slide in the case flank
is actuated, the minute repeater
indicates the time on demand with
two gongs: The hours sound with
low-pitched tones, the quarterhours
with double-tone strikes, and
the minutes with high-pitched tones.
At 7:52, for instance, the melody
consists of seven low tones,
three double strikes, and seven
high tones.
T
GRAND COMPLICATION
Limited to a mere six pieces: The most complicated and most exclusive A. Lange & Söhne
timepiece ascends to the pinnacle of precision watchmaking.
The coveted Portuguese Tourbillon
Mystère in two new, limited series
in platinum and red gold with the
retrograde date display is enhanced
by an additional horological
refinement, which also appears in
the name of this novelty: Portuguese
Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde (Ref.
function at the end of the month has
been integrated into this exceptional
watch for the first time. The role of the
seconds display is performed by the
cage of the minute tourbillon.
Since 2009, the Portuguese Minute
Celebrating Speed
xactly 50 years ago, in 1963, Rolex unveiled the Oyster Perpetual
COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA, a chronograph designed for racing
drivers and measuring speed. This watch has established an
impressive track record on the racing circuits and achieved iconic
status as the world’s most famous and most sought-after chronograph.
In 2013, as Rolex deepens its commitment to motor racing by becoming
Global Partner and Official Timepiece of Formula 1, the COSMOGRAPH
DAYTONA is being offered for the first time in 950 platinum, the noblest
and most precious of metals. This new model has an ice blue dial and
a chestnut brown monobloc CERACHROM bezel in ceramic, which
enhances the famous tachymetric scale for calculating speed.
A Quest for Perfection
A blend of technological innovation and sophisticated
aesthetics, these new Rolex models, all COSC-certified
chronometers for their precision, are the latest versions of
legendary watches evolving in a constant quest for perfection.
NEW 2012 MODELS
E
Heritage and Innovation
he CERACHROM bezel insert, a ceramic component developed
and patented by Rolex in 2005, also takes pride of place in
an innovative, ground-breaking form on the Oyster Perpetual
GMT-MASTER II in 904L steel. Rolex has developed a single-piece
CERACHROM bezel insert in two colours. The new GMT-MASTER II’s
24-hour bezel insert is half blue and half black, representing daytime
hours and night-time hours. It echoes the traditional two-colour bezel
of the original GMT-MASTER, which was created in 1955 to allow airline
pilots to read the time in two different time zones simultaneously.
T
A Passion for the Sea
olex is presenting a third new model in its Professional range
this year – a timekeeping instrument dedicated to yachting
regattas. The Oyster Perpetual YACHT-MASTER II is available
for the first time entirely in 904L steel. This revolutionary regatta
chronograph, introduced in 2007 in 18 ct gold, features a unique function:
a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory that responds
ideally to skippers’ needs for precise timing.
The rotatable RING COMMAND bezel, an unprecedented and patented
interface for setting the watch, enables simple access to the sophisticated
watch functions. A pure example of Rolex expertise in terms of precision,
functions and reliability, the new YACHT-MASTER II in 904L steel is the
benchmark for all those with a passion for sailing.
R
Prestige and Elegance
dding to its line of prestigious classic watches, Rolex is offering
new colourful versions of the Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE with
luxurious leather straps whose elegant colours match the dials.
Available in a choice of 18 ct yellow, white or EVEROSE gold, these new
DAY-DATE models with fluted bezels bring a fresh touch to Rolex’s most
prestigious calendar model, created in 1956.
A bezel set with baguette-cut diamonds appears as a feature of all seven
models in a new DAY-DATE “SERTIE” selection in 18 ct yellow, white or
EVEROSE gold graced with exclusive, sophisticated dials: mother-of-pearl
creations with a floral motif decorated with gold and diamonds or an oxford
motif share the limelight with fascinating gemstone dials – lapis lazuli, bull’s
eye and ferrite.
Rolex is also introducing new jewelled creations that bring together
precious materials and magnificent gem setting. The new Oyster Perpetual
LADY-DATEJUST PEARLMASTER combines a case and bracelet in
18 ct EVEROSE gold with a bezel and bracelet links in 18 ct white
gold exquisitely set with diamonds of the finest quality. The dial of this
sumptuous watchmaking gem is adorned with black or white mother-
and built entirely by Patek Philippe.
The retro-contemporary timepiece
now comes in a new white-gold
Breguet numerals.
Already available in rose gold, the
acclaimed Reference 5216 Grand
date and moon phases now comes
in a new platinum version with a
black dial. It has the magnificent looks
that befit such an elegant, highly
complex opus.
The self-winding Nautilus ladies’
wristwatch in stainless steel with
the diamond-set bezel radiates
even more casual elegance with a
dial redesigned exclusively for the
feminine version. The famous Nautilus
the numerals, hour markers, and
hands are subtly rounded and
somewhat more prominent. Polished
and satin-finished zones alternate on
the bezel and bracelet.
Launched in 2011, the Reference
diamond-set bezel, and handguilloched
ivory-opaline dial, it
opens up a new realm of colors for
women on the go. The city names
family, a collection that epitomizes
the timeless round wristwatch, the
Reference 5227 stands out with
exclusive styling and a seamlessly
integrated dust cover. Thanks to its
totally invisible hinge, this timepiece
has an elegant, ultra-slim silhouette.
The delicate decor on the lugs
underscores the finesse of the
rose-, white-, or yellow-gold case
that accommodates a self-winding
movement.
Patek Philippe presents a new
silvery opaline dial with its latest
Reference 5396 Annual Calendar
for men; it comes with a whiteor
rose-gold “drop link” bracelet
first introduced in 1998. The classic
inline day/month double-aperture
display and the date at 6 o’clock
reflect the signature dial architecture
of Patek Philippe calendar watches
from the 1940s and 1950s.
The Aquanaut Luce Haute Joaillerie
collection has now been enriched
with baguette diamonds, which
adorn the bezel of a new self-winding
white-gold model. The all-new blue
two-tone dial with the subtle checkerboard
effect is crafted from varnished,
engraved mother of pearl. Secured
with a diamond-set fold-over clasp,
the highly robust strap echoes the
color and structure of the dial.
This new Calatrava ladies’ wristwatch
is the embodiment of timeless
elegance, transforming the legendary
officer’s-style case into a feminine
classic. Its grained, cream-colored
dial with applied gold numerals
forms a subtle contrast to the
rose-gold case. The self-winding
movement can be admired through
the sapphire-crystal case back.
NEW 2013 2012 MODELS
A Quest for Perfection
A blend of technological innovation and sophisticated
aesthetics, these new Rolex models, all COSC-certified
chronometers for their precision, are the latest versions of
legendary watches evolving in a constant quest for perfection.
Celebrating Speed
E
xactly 50 years ago, in 1963, Rolex unveiled the Oyster Perpetual
A Passion for the Sea
R
olex is presenting a third new model in its Professional range
this year – a timekeeping instrument dedicated to yachting
Heritage and Innovation
T
he CERACHROM bezel insert, a ceramic component developed
and patented by Rolex in 2005, also takes pride of place in
an innovative, ground-breaking form on the Oyster Perpetual
GMT-MASTER II in 904L steel. Rolex has developed a single-piece
CERACHROM bezel insert in two colours. The new GMT-MASTER II’s
24-hour bezel insert is half blue and half black, representing daytime
hours and night-time hours. It echoes the traditional two-colour bezel
of the original GMT-MASTER, which was created in 1955 to allow airline
pilots to read the time in two different time zones simultaneously.
Prestige and Elegance
A
dding to its line of prestigious classic watches, Rolex is offering
new colourful versions of the Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE with
luxurious leather straps whose elegant colours match the dials.
The dial of this
sumptuous watchmaking gem is adorned with black or white motherof-pearl
enhanced with a lotus flower motif in a pink-gold tone.
NEW 2013 MODELS
Master Tourbillon Dualtime -
Meaningful horological performance
The Grande Maison in the Vallée de Joux unveils the Master Tourbillon
Dualtime equipped with a new tourbillon carriage.
W
ithin this superb
timepiece with its
classic lines and pure
design, the ingenious tourbillon
mechanism recaptures its initial
function: that of a device designed
to further improve rating precision.
The Master Tourbillon Dualtime
housing an automatic movement,
Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978B,
displays a second time-zone
on a dial testifying to a degree
of aesthetic perfection that is
inseparable from technical genius.
On this model equipped with a
reworked tourbillon carriage, the
watchmakers of the Manufacture
have made no compromises
regarding its performance,
reliability and sturdiness. The
titanium tourbillon regulator
accompanies a high-precision
automatic precision beating at
28,800 vibrations per hour and
equipped with an unusual and
extremely large balance featuring
an inertia amounting to 11.5 mg
x cm 2 .
As a benchmark in the realm
of Fine Watchmaking, the
Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre
leaves no detail to chance.
Patented by the Manufacture
Jaeger-LeCoultre, the date
indication is adjustable in both
directions and makes a bigger
jump between the 15th and the
16th so as not to obstruct the view
of the titanium tourbillon carriage.
An exceptional timepiece
intended for daily wear, the Master
Tourbillon proves its sterling
qualities of precision, reliability
and water resistance within the
stringent framework of the 1000
Hours Control. This set of rigorous
trials that has become a watch
industry legend now includes
rating regularity and amplitude
measurements relating to the
tourbillon regulator, including under
conditions involving small impacts.
Mechanical inventiveness
is matched by aesthetic
refinement: the pink gold case
is a halfmillimetre smaller to suit
all wrists. While the 41.5-mm
diameter has remained the same
to maintain absolute harmony with
the dimensions of the tourbillon,
the lugs and bezel are distinctly
more slender and streamlined. An
alligator leather strap with a gold
pin buckle set the finishing touch
to the Master Tourbillon Dualtime
fitted with a sapphire crystal
caseback revealing the secrets
and traditional Fine Watchmaking
finishing of a prestigious Jaeger-
LeCoultre that holds the world
record for precision timing.
The Sea, History, Technology and Design
W
hile the Panerai brand was
founded in Florence in
1860, the Panerai watch
came into being in the world of the
depths of the sea. To be precise, the
depths of the Mediterranean, where
in March 1936 the commandos
of the Italian Navy first tested the
prototype created by Panerai in
response to the request from the
General Staff to develop “a special
luminous underwater watch”. The
Royal Navy, as it was then called,
evaluated the creations of many
established producers, but the
only example which satisfied all the
rigorous requirements of the military
authorities was the one which would
become Panerai’s first prototype,
and also, according to many, the
first professional underwater model
in the history of watchmaking: the
Radiomir.
In the years before the Radiomir
was created, watches had already
been made that were water-resistant
because they had a double case,
that is, they were inserted in a
hermetically sealed case, or fitted
in a screw case that could resist
the pressure of water to a certain
depth. But water-resistance alone
was not enough for the Italian
military authorities, who required
a watch which met several other
requirements that were fundamental
for the commandos who would
operate underwater for long periods,
frequently in critical conditions.
When the Florentine watchmaker
Panerai created the Radiomir, the
company had already been a trusted
supplier of the Navy for some
time. In 1938, two years after the
success of the prototype, it put into
production the first ten examples for
the men of the naval assault forces
which were part of the Italian
Navy’s Submarine Command. On
their wrists, over of the waterproof
suit of rubberised fabric, the
commandos wore both a watch,
the indispensable instrument
for synchronising all wartime
operations, and other precision
instruments developed by Panerai,
such as the depth gauge and the
compass.
Equipped only with this vital
equipment, the divers of the
Submarine Command carried
out their operations riding
slow-speed torpedoes, special
underwater vessels which carried
two operators seated astride
the vessel. On these human
torpedoes, the commandos
explored the depths of ports
in the Mediterranean under
extremely difficult conditions,
in the darkness of the night in
waters which were frozen and
muddy. They descended 40
metres below the surface of the
sea and remained immersed for
hours, depending only on their
instruments, which consequently
had to be guaranteed to provide
the maximum resistance,
reliability, accuracy and legibility.
IWC Celebrates it’s Legendary Portuguese Family
N
o other time machine
approaches as close to the
ideal of a perfect navigational
instrument in the infinite ocean of time
as a perpetual calendar from IWC. This
is particularly true of the Portuguese
Perpetual Calendar. The Portuguese
Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 5023) with the
traditional display of the moon phase
is now also being manufactured in
the same case size, in red gold with a
silver-plated dial and in white gold with a
slate-coloured dial.
The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is
available with the classic cut-out moon
phase display when observed from
the northern hemisphere. The Earth’s
satellite waxes onto this miniature stage
from the left behind the semi-circular
setting becomes visible in the middle
as a full moon and wanes on the right
side behind the second semi-circle. It
is accompanied on the moon disc by
small raised stars.
The coveted Portuguese Tourbillon
Mystère in two new, limited series
in platinum and red gold with the
retrograde date display is enhanced
by an additional horological
refinement, which also appears in
the name of this novelty: Portuguese
Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde (Ref.
5044). A date indicator with a flyback
function at the end of the month has
been integrated into this exceptional
watch for the first time. The role of the
seconds display is performed by the
cage of the minute tourbillon.
Since 2009, the Portuguese Minute
Repeater (Ref. 5449) with the new
IWC-manufactured 98950-calibre
movement in hunter style has chimed
out the time in the most delightful
way. Since then, it has also had the
small seconds at “6 o’clock”. Each of
the two variants in platinum and red
gold is limited to 500 watches.
GRAND COMPLICATION
Limited to a mere six pieces: The most complicated and most exclusive A. Lange & Söhne
timepiece ascends to the pinnacle of precision watchmaking.
T
he GRAND COMPLICATION
features a host of fascinating
functions and yet again
manifests the ability of the Saxon
master watchmakers to conquer
ever new peaks with their
undisputed ingenuity. Beneath the
lucidly configured enamel dial, the
horological opus with the calibre
designation L1902 incorporates
scores of lavishly finished parts,
bringing to life the most elaborate
complications which the art of haute
horlogerie has to offer: Chiming
mechanism with grand and
small strike, minute repeater, splitseconds
chronograph with minute
counter and jumping seconds as
well as a perpetual calendar with
moonphase display.
The development of the GRAND
COMPLICATION is an adventurous
expedition into the cosmos of
complexity. The result is a watch
that is extraordinary in every respect,
reflecting the brilliance of the Lange
dynasty’s forebears and the virtuosity
of today’s watchmakers.
A sound of inimitable purity
Two carefully hand-wrought gongs
produce the seductive tones of the
minute repeater and of the hour and
quarter-hour strikes. The GRAND
COMPLICATION is endowed
with a chiming mechanism that
automatically indicates the time in
the grand strike (grande sonnerie) or
small strike (petite sonnerie) modes.
Every fifteen minutes, when set
to grande sonnerie, it first indicates
the full hour on the low-pitched gong
and then the quarter-hours with a
double strike on both gongs. In the
petite sonnerie mode, it indicates
the elapsed quarter-hours with one,
two, or three double strikes on both
gongs. At the top of every hour,
it strikes the time in hours on the
low-pitched gong.
It is no coincidence that the
grande sonnerie is considered to
be one of the most challenging of
all complications in watchmaking.
It imposes extreme requirements
on the perfect interaction of
intricate mechanisms crafted from
materials of the highest quality
by exceptionally talented and
experienced watchmakers. “Free,
with no shake” – that is the mantra
which governs the interplay between
moving parts to such a degree
of accuracy that they deliver a
precise strike and sound with
unmatched purity.
The chiming mechanism is
powered by one of a total of three
mainspring barrels. They are wound
with the crown. Turning the crown
clockwise tensions the springs for
the going train and the chronograph.
The chiming mechanism barrel is
wound in the opposite direction.
When the slide in the case flank
is actuated, the minute repeater
indicates the time on demand with
two gongs: The hours sound with
low-pitched tones, the quarterhours
with double-tone strikes, and
the minutes with high-pitched tones.
At 7:52, for instance, the melody
consists of seven low tones,
three double strikes, and seven
high tones.
