ach year our watch houses 

present to us the results of 

their pioneering research in 

the form of their new timepieces. 

2012 has seen much of their 

research and development come 

to fruition. 

Patek Philippe have unveiled, 

even by their standards, an 

exceptionally beautiful new 

collection of gentlemen’s and ladies’ 

wristwatches, whilst continuing to 

push the boundaries of combining 

and refining the most sophisticated 

complications. 

The contemporary design of 

the Tank Anglaise symbolises an 

elegant and well timed return to 

Cartier’s iconic roots, while the 

innovation of the IWC Portuguese 

Sidérale Scafusia and the Panerai 

1950 Tourbillon GMT Ceramica are 

evidence of the recent deserved 

success of these houses and their 

resulting substantial technical 

development. Although a small 

manufacture, Lange & Söhne 

continue to create wonderfully 

understated gentlemen’s 

timepieces to the very highest of 

watchmaking standards; the hand 

finishing of their movements is now 

simply sublime. 

Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrate Her 

Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in style, 

Audemars Piguet celebrate the 40th 

anniversary of the Royal Oak and 

this is a big year for Omega, 

the timekeepers for the London 

2012 Olympic Games, who 

continue to strengthen the quality 

and breadth of their offering. 

Perhaps the most significant 

development in the watchmaking 

industry in 2012 is the launch of the 

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller 

(see page 17). This is the first 

“complicated” watch launched by 

Rolex for decades combining the 

additional functions of an annual 

calendar and a second time zone. 

The calendar adjustments are 

controlled solely by the bezel 

and crown. The watch exudes 

all of the strengths synonymous 

with Rolex. 

2012 has been worth waiting for. 

Patek Philippe Ref. 5204 Split-seconds 

chronograph with perpetual calendar

atek Philippe has rounded out 

its collection of chronographs 

featuring manufacture 

movements with a split-second 

chronograph that integrates a 

perpetual calendar. This grand 

complication showcases the 

manually wound CHR 29-535 PS Q 

movement with a novel split-seconds 

mechanism – a masterpiece of 

engineering and aesthetics that 

incorporates several patented 

innovations. 

Two years ago, connoisseurs 

and collectors already began to 

speculate that Patek Philippe’s 

coveted Ref. 5004 split-seconds 

chronograph in a classic manually 

wound design with a column wheel 

and a horizontal clutch, as well as a 

perpetual calendar, would someday 

be superseded by a new splitseconds 

chronograph based on 

the manufacture’s proprietary CH 

29-535 PS calibre. The ambitious 

project has now been completed.

WC Schaffhausen recently 

launched The Portuguese 

Sidérale Scafusia, the most 

exclusive and complicated 

watch ever created by IWC. 

“The Portuguese Sidérale Scafusia 

is a universal work of art and the 

result of ten years’ research by a 

team of engineers, watchmakers 

and scientists,” explains Georges 

Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. 

“They have succeeded in 

combining solar time and sidereal 

time on a single dial. From the 

front, this fascinating masterpiece 

is a classical Portuguese 

watch, from the reverse side an 

astronomical instrument and, 

on the inside, a milestone in the art 

of Haute Horlogerie.” But perhaps 

even more fascinating than the 

number and combination of the 

complications is the notion 

that every single watch is 

unmistakably unique. 

The Portuguese Sidérale 

Scafusia will not go into series 

production. Every single watch 

will be produced exclusively to 

order by the customer and is an 

individual project in itself. Since 

the star chart and horizon as well 

as sunrise and sunset times have 

to be calculated and displayed for 

a precise location specified by the 

customer. This means that every 

customer is not only wearing a 

unique watch on his wrist but also 

his own personalised constellation 

of stars, as seen in the night sky 

from the location of his choice. 

ts new-generation movement 

is based on an unprecedented 

concept nicknamed Dual- 

Wing. A genuine revolution in 

terms of watchmaking precision, 

the Dual-Wing concept is 

composed of two separate watch 

mechanisms connected by a 

shared regulating organ. 

The Duomètre à Chronographe 

is the highest expression of the 

art of the chronograph. A true 

masterpiece of micromechanics, 

its Jaeger-LeCoultre ‘Dual-Wing’ 

Calibre contains two independent 

power reserves, one of which is 

devoted solely to a chronograph 

possessing unique functions: 

hours, minutes and seconds

Patek Philippe has enriched its 

iconic Calatrava collection for 

men with a new paragon of sleek 

elegance. The timeless design of 

the round case with the smooth 

bezel was inspired by a late-1950s 

model with a slender, graceful 

silhouette. The manually wound 

movement can be admired through 

the display back.

The first Nautilus endowed with 

the patented Annual Calendar, 

premiered in 2010. As an ongoing 

success story, it is now available 

in two new versions with metal 

bracelets and black or silvery-white 

dials. The day of the week and the 

month are displayed in two in-line 

apertures. 

The range of case and strap 

materials, together with the choice 

of five different colours for the dial, 

as well as various colours for the 

appliqués and straps, results in 

over 200 possible combinations. 

In view of this individuality and the 

highly demanding design work 

involved, buyers will have to wait 

approximately one year for delivery. 

But as IWC Schaffhausen say: 

special features require time. 

hands, a display of units per 

minute, and a “foudroyante” 

seconds display with zero reset. 

As the first model in this 

prestigious lineage, the Duomètre 

à Chronographe watch is available 

in pink gold and platinum, while an 

18ct yellow gold edition is available 

in a limited series of 300. 

Arranged on the elegant and 

easily readable dial, the hours, 

minutes, seconds and moonphase 

displays appear to make the 

Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire a 

classic watch model. But inside 

the case and partially hidden 

from view beats Calibre 381, a 

prodigious movement boasting 

unprecedented precision based on 

the Dual-Wing concept and which 

propels the watch firmly into the 

spheres of Haute Horlogerie. The 

Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire 

was voted the Watch of the Year 

by the collectors and watch 

connoisseurs of Timezone.co.uk. 

The Duomètre à Quantième 

Lunaire is available in 18ct 

pink or yellow gold on either 

a matt black or chocolate 

brown alligator leather 

strap. For the more fashion 

conscious male, the 

Manufacture have also added 

an 18ct white gold model in 

a limited edition of 200 with 

a black dial to the collection. 


Lunaire 40.5 is a slightly 

smaller case at 40.5mm 

diameter and is available in 

18ct pink gold on a chocolate 

toned alligator leather strap. 

The Duomètre vividly 

illustrates Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 

unassailable position in the 

highest spheres of technical 

watchmaking. 


The Annual Calendar reference 

5235, announced during a preview 

in June 2011, pays tribute to the ultra 

precise regulator clocks of bygone 

centuries; it is the first Patek Philippe 

wristwatch with a regulator dial 

and features a sweep minute hand, 

subsidiary hours at 12 o’clock and 

a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. Its 

classic Calatrava case incorporates 

the new ultra-thin self-winding 

calibre 31-260 REG QA movement. 


The astronomical wristwatch aptly 

named “Celestial with date” 

was launched as an “Haute Joaillerie” 

version in 2010. It now debuts in a 

platinum case with a mirror-polished 

bezel without diamonds. Its moving 

sky chart accurately depicts the 

nocturnal sky, tracking the movement 

of the stars as well as the position and 

phases of the moon. 


Patek Philippe unites three of its 

specialties in a new self-winding 

wristwatch with a minute repeater, 

a perpetual calendar with a 

retrograde date, and an officer’sstyle 

Calatrava case. The back is 

protected by a newly developed 

hinged dust cover. The dial of the 

white-gold grand complication is 

superbly legible.

he Tank watch was created 

in 1917 out of a vision, a 

solid concept that was the 

culmination of a lengthy process of 

deliberation. Here was an instrument 

for telling the time that completely 

eschewed tradition, turned custom 

on its head, brought modern 

design into the ateliers and took its 

place as a quintessential model for 

watchmaking. It was said that “a 

tank had stormed Cartier”. As it went 

on to segue between decades and 

straddle the century, this trailblazing 

watch and its revolutionary form, 

style and elegance were to pioneer a 

decisively modern lifestyle. 

Paris, London and New York. 

1847, 1902 and 1909. The Cartier 

brothers wasted no time in setting 

out to conquer the world. The entire 

Cartier back catalogue is coloured 

by this quest to open up to the 

international stage. The story of the 

house’s iconic tank watch typifies 

the pattern: following in the footsteps 

of the Tank Américaine and Tank 

Française, the Tank Anglaise was 

a logical progression.

1989, the Tank Américaine watch 

followed in the footsteps of the Tank 

Cintrée, borrowing its curved case

The Tank Française watch, 

launched in 1996, updated the 

classic Tank legacy of the 

parallel-set lateral brancards, 

Roman numeral dial, cheminde-fer 

chapter ring, bâton hands, 

and a fluted winding crown

the curved case was set in a

As functional as it was stylish,

concentrated form and emboldened

Ladies First Perpetual calendar. 

The Patek Philippe collection of ladies’ 

grand complication watches has been 

extended by the first calendar model 

for feminine wrists: the “Ladies First 

Perpetual Calendar”. With the famous 

ultra thin calibre 240 Q self-winding 

movement, this diamond set watch 

combines the beauty of sophisticated 

technology with the charisma of 

fascinating aesthetics in an elegant, 

slender rose gold case. 


First presented in rose gold in 2009, 

the reference 7071 “Ladies First 

Chronograph” celebrates a 2012 

white gold re-launch with three dial 

colours. The surround beneath the 

crystal is set with 116 diamonds. 

Its heart is a manually wound 

chronograph movement developed 

from the ground up and crafted inhouse 

by Patek Philippe. 


This unique, elegant watch is a new 

model in the Gondolo “Haute

in the Royal Oak history of 

modern horology. Launched 

in 1972 by Audemars Piguet, 

the first luxury sports watch was 

a breakthrough creation right 

from the start. Legend has it that 

this model was designed in one 

night. Forty years later, the Royal 

Oak has become an authentic 

contemporary watch icon.

ince it premiered in 1994, 

the LANGE 1 has been the 

icon of A. Lange & Söhne. 

With its particular combination 

of traditional elements that are 

unique to Saxony’s watchmaking 

heritage – including the threequarter 

plate, screwed gold chatons 

or the screw balance – as well as 

groundbreaking innovations such 

as the off-centre dial design and 

the ingenious Lange outsize date, 

it earned global acclaim. The 

LANGE 1 soon became a multiple 

award winner in the realm of high 

end mechanical timepieces and 

wrote horological history in its own 

right. Additionally, it stands for the 

competence of Lange’s master 

watchmakers and symbolises their 

untiring quest for the perfect watch. 

Eighteen years after its debut, the 

LANGE 1 is not only the strong 

foundation of a successful watch 

family, it is also a benchmark for 

many of the manufactory’s other 

developments. 

This applies all the more to a 

debut within its own family, as is 

the case with the GRAND LANGE 1. 

It manifests clearly rebalanced 

proportions and an inner life 

meticulously crafted to match them. 

With a deliberate rearrangement of 

watch components, the totally new, 

manually wound calibre L095.1 

made it possible to transpose the 

graceful dial architecture of the 

LANGE 1 to the perceptibly larger 

model. The hours, minutes, and 

seconds, as well as the outsize 

date and power-reserve indication, 

are configured on the solid-silver 

dial without any overlap points. To 

faithfully preserve the harmonious 

proportions down to the last detail, 

the Lange outsize date was also 

enlarged by the same factor as the 

dial itself.

Furthermore, the larger movement 

diameter made it feasible to arrange 

more parts on one level. The result 

is a movement height of merely 4.7 

millimetres. The impressive 72-hour 

power reserve was achieved in a 

space-saving manner with only one 

mainspring barrel. 

This had a positive impact on 

the dimensions of the yellow-gold, 

pink-gold and platinum cases. With 

a diameter of 40.9 millimetres, they 

are only 8.8 millimetres high, a very 

elegant ratio of width to height.

in 18ct yellow gold, 18ct pink gold 

or platinum on a hand stitched 

crocodile leather strap.

he Luminor 1950 Tourbillon 

GMT Ceramica is a watch of 

great character, offering not 

only the complex, sophisticated 

tourbillon regulator mechanism 

patented by Officine Panerai – 

with a balance which rotates on 

its own axis in a period of 30 

seconds, thus correcting any 

possible errors due to the force 

of gravity – but also the indication 

of a second time zone and the 

visual display of the power reserve 

of six days, achieved by three 

spring barrels connected in series. 

The material of which the 

Luminor 1950 case (48mm in

diameter) has been made, also 

expresses the technical mastery of 

the Officine Panerai manufacture: 

it is a synthetic ceramic based on 

zirconium powder which, by means 

of a complex series of working 

and finishing processes, acquires 

a particularly uniform and even 

matt black appearance, as well as 

ensuring excellent performance in 

terms of hardness, resistance to 

scratches, corrosive agents and 

high temperatures. 

The black dial has a simple 

graphic appearance reduced to 

essentials and is of the classic 

sandwich structure created in 

the 1930s by Officine Panerai to 

achieve the maximum legibility, 

even in conditions of very low 

light. The small dial at 3 o’clock 

provides am/pm indication over 

24 hours. The small seconds dial 

at 9 o’clock also contains an 

original indicator consisting of a 

series of dot markers, which is 

connected to the tourbillon and 

therefore moves at twice the speed 

of the seconds hand, completing 

one revolution in 30 seconds. 

The 12-sided back with 12 sides 

in titanium (coated with PVD) has 

a sapphire crystal window in the 

centre which enables the P.2005 


manufacture movement to be 

seen. Here Officine Panerai is 

presenting it for the first time in 

the P.2005/B version, which has 

undergone a blackening treatment 

to create an aesthetic continuity 

with the matt black of the case. 

The sapphire crystal also enables 

the remaining power reserve to be 

seen, thanks to a golden indicator 

within an arc-shaped dial. 

The Luminor 1950 Tourbillon 

GMT Ceramica (PAM00396) is 

supplied with a strap of natural 

untreated leather, closed by an 

adjustable steel buckle, coated 

in PVD.

ith the Seamaster Aqua 

Terra GMT, OMEGA 

introduces a new 

member of its exclusive Co-Axial 

family of movements. The OMEGA 

Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615 is 

the first of OMEGA’s proprietary 

movements to be equipped with a 

GMT complication, meaning that 

along with the central hour, minute 

and seconds hands, there is a 

GMT hand which completes one 

rotation every 24 hours, making it 

possible to keep track of the time in 

two time zones. 

The 43 mm case is available in 

a choice of metals: 18ct red gold 

or stainless steel or in a bicolor 

version in 18ct red gold and 

stainless steel. The sapphire crystal 

on the screw-in caseback allows 

a clear view of the extraordinary 

Co-Axial movement inside. The 

watch is available with either a 

bracelet in the same metal as the 

watch case or with a black, brown 

or blue leather strap. 


The dial is distinguished by the 

teak pattern associated with the 

Aqua Terra collection. The vertical 

lines are reminiscent of the wooden 

decks on luxury boats. The applied 

18ct gold brushed and polished 

indexes are coated with white 

Super-LumiNova and the faceted 

hands are crafted from 18ct white 

or red gold. Like the indexes, they 

are coated with white Super- 

LumiNova which allows ease of 

reading in all light conditions. 

The GMT hand’s red arrow makes 

it easy to distinguish the two 

time zones. 

At the heart of the Seamaster 

Aqua Terra GMT is the Co-Axial 

calibre 8605/8615. It is part of 

the family of movements OMEGA 

introduced in 2007, built around 

the first practical new watch 

escapement to be developed in 

some 250 years. The Co-Axial 

escapement in the OMEGA 

calibres is used in conjunction 

with a free-sprung balance and 

its function differs considerably 

from that of a conventional lever 

escapement with index. The 

watch’s rate can be adjusted by 

modifying the moment of inertia 

of the balance by means of two 

gold regulating micro screws 

embedded in the circular balance. 

This design avoids the disturbing 

effects of contact between the 

balance-spring and the index 

pins and therefore ensures that 

the stability of rate offered by the 

Co-Axial escapement is maintained 

over long periods of use. The result 

is reduced friction which means 

that there is almost no need for 

lubrication; the Co-Axial calibres 

have long service intervals and 

the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT, 

which is also equipped with a 

silicon balance spring, is delivered 

with a four-year warranty. 

The OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 

8605/8615 is the first in the family 

to be equipped with a GMT 

complication. Its GMT hand has 

a diamond-polished red arrow, 

making it easy to track time in a 

second time zone or GMT display. 

Intriguingly, the GMT hand can also 

be used for compass orientation: 

when the watch is held parallel 

to the ground with its hour hand 

pointed in the direction of the sun, 

the GMT hand, when it is adjusted 

to the same time on the 24-hour 

GMT display, will indicate north in 

the northern hemisphere.

he Tank watch was created 

in 1917 out of a vision, a 

solid concept that was the 

culmination of a lengthy process of 

deliberation. Here was an instrument 

for telling the time that completely 

eschewed tradition, turned custom 

on its head, brought modern 

design into the ateliers and took its 

place as a quintessential model for 

watchmaking. It was said that “a 

tank had stormed Cartier”. As it went 

on to segue between decades and 

straddle the century, this trailblazing 

watch and its revolutionary form, 

style and elegance were to pioneer a 

decisively modern lifestyle. 

Paris, London and New York. 

1847, 1902 and 1909. The Cartier 

brothers wasted no time in setting 

out to conquer the world. The entire 

Cartier back catalogue is coloured 

by this quest to open up to the 

international stage. The story of the 

house’s iconic tank watch typifies 

the pattern: following in the footsteps 

of the Tank Américaine and Tank 

Française, the Tank Anglaise was 

a logical progression.

With altered dimensions and a new inner life, the GRAND LANGE 1 exhibits true grandeur. 

A new movement developed entirely from scratch makes it possible to transpose the subtly balanced 

dial layout of the LANGE 1 to its larger sibling and at the same time to slim down the silhouette.

ince it premiered in 1994, 

the LANGE 1 has been the 

icon of A. Lange & Söhne. 

With its particular combination 

of traditional elements that are 

unique to Saxony’s watchmaking 

heritage – including the threequarter 

plate, screwed gold chatons 

or the screw balance – as well as 

groundbreaking innovations such 

as the off-centre dial design and 

the ingenious Lange outsize date, 

it earned global acclaim. The 

LANGE 1 soon became a multiple 

award winner in the realm of high 

end mechanical timepieces and 

wrote horological history in its own 

right. Additionally, it stands for the 

competence of Lange’s master 

watchmakers and symbolises their 

untiring quest for the perfect watch. 

Eighteen years after its debut, the 

LANGE 1 is not only the strong 

foundation of a successful watch 

family, it is also a benchmark for 

many of the manufactory’s other 

developments. 

This applies all the more to a 

debut within its own family, as is 

the case with the GRAND LANGE 1. 

It manifests clearly rebalanced 

proportions and an inner life 

meticulously crafted to match them. 

With a deliberate rearrangement of 

watch components, the totally new, 

manually wound calibre L095.1 

made it possible to transpose the 

graceful dial architecture of the 

LANGE 1 to the perceptibly larger 

model. The hours, minutes, and 

seconds, as well as the outsize 

date and power-reserve indication, 

are configured on the solid-silver 

dial without any overlap points. To 

faithfully preserve the harmonious 

proportions down to the last detail, 

the Lange outsize date was also 

enlarged by the same factor as the 

dial itself. 

Calibre L095.1 

Furthermore, the larger movement 

diameter made it feasible to arrange 

more parts on one level. The result 

is a movement height of merely 4.7 

millimetres. The impressive 72-hour 

power reserve was achieved in a 

space-saving manner with only one 

mainspring barrel. 

This had a positive impact on 

the dimensions of the yellow-gold, 

pink-gold and platinum cases. With 

a diameter of 40.9 millimetres, they 

are only 8.8 millimetres high, a very 

elegant ratio of width to height.

A great speciality of haute horlogerie, the tourbillon regulator 

has been reinterpreted in a sophisticated and innovative manner 

in the new Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Ceramica.

he Luminor 1950 Tourbillon 

GMT Ceramica is a watch of 

great character, offering not 

only the complex, sophisticated 

tourbillon regulator mechanism 

patented by Officine Panerai – 

with a balance which rotates on its 

own axis in a period of 30 seconds, 

thus correcting any possible errors 

due to the force 

of gravity – but also the indication 

of a second time zone and the 

visual display of the power reserve 

of six days, achieved by three 

spring barrels connected in series. 

The material of which the 

Luminor 1950 case (48mm in 

diameter) has been made, also 

expresses the technical mastery of 

the Officine Panerai manufacture: 

it is a synthetic ceramic based on 

zirconium powder which, by means 

of a complex series of working 

and finishing processes, acquires 

a particularly uniform and even 

matt black appearance, as well as 

ensuring excellent performance in 

terms of hardness, resistance to 

scratches, corrosive agents and 

high temperatures. 

The black dial has a simple 

graphic appearance reduced to 

essentials and is of the classic 

sandwich structure created in 

the 1930s by Officine Panerai to 

achieve the maximum legibility, 

even in conditions of very low 

light. The small dial at 3 o’clock 

provides am/pm indication over 

24 hours. The small seconds dial 

at 9 o’clock also contains an 

original indicator consisting of a 

series of dot markers, which is 

connected to the tourbillon and 

therefore moves at twice the speed 

of the seconds hand, completing 

one revolution in 30 seconds. 

The 12-sided back with 12 sides 

in titanium (coated with PVD) has 

a sapphire crystal window in the 

centre which enables the P.2005 

manufacture movement to be 

seen. Here Officine Panerai is 

presenting it for the first time in 

the P.2005/B version, which has 

undergone a blackening treatment 

to create an aesthetic continuity 

with the matt black of the case. 

The sapphire crystal also enables 

the remaining power reserve to be 

seen, thanks to a golden indicator 

within an arc-shaped dial. 

The Luminor 1950 Tourbillon 

GMT Ceramica (PAM00396) is 

supplied with a strap of natural 

untreated leather, closed by an 

adjustable steel buckle, coated 

in PVD. 

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT 

W 

ith the Seamaster Aqua 

Terra GMT, OMEGA 

introduces a new 

member of its exclusive Co-Axial 

family of movements. The OMEGA 

Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615 is 

the first of OMEGA’s proprietary 

movements to be equipped with a 

GMT complication, meaning that 

along with the central hour, minute 

and seconds hands, there is a 

GMT hand which completes one 

rotation every 24 hours, making it 

possible to keep track of the time in 

two time zones. 

The 43 mm case is available in 

a choice of metals: 18ct red gold 

or stainless steel or in a bicolor 

version in 18ct red gold and 

stainless steel. The sapphire crystal 

on the screw-in caseback allows 

a clear view of the extraordinary 

Co-Axial movement inside. The 

watch is available with either a 

bracelet in the same metal as the 

watch case or with a black, brown 

or blue leather strap. 

The dial is distinguished by the 

teak pattern associated with the 

Aqua Terra collection. The vertical 

lines are reminiscent of the wooden 

decks on luxury boats. The applied 

18ct gold brushed and polished 

indexes are coated with white 

Super-LumiNova and the faceted 

hands are crafted from 18ct white 

or red gold. Like the indexes, they 

are coated with white Super- 

LumiNova which allows ease of 

reading in all light conditions. 

The GMT hand’s red arrow makes 

it easy to distinguish the two 

time zones. 

At the heart of the Seamaster 

Aqua Terra GMT is the Co-Axial 

calibre 8605/8615. It is part of 

the family of movements OMEGA 

introduced in 2007, built around 

the first practical new watch 

escapement to be developed in 

some 250 years. The Co-Axial 

escapement in the OMEGA 

calibres is used in conjunction 

with a free-sprung balance and 

its function differs considerably 

from that of a conventional lever 

escapement with index. The 

watch’s rate can be adjusted by 

modifying the moment of inertia 

of the balance by means of two 

gold regulating micro screws 

embedded in the circular balance. 

This design avoids the disturbing 

effects of contact between the 

balance-spring and the index 

pins and therefore ensures that 

the stability of rate offered by the 

Co-Axial escapement is maintained 

over long periods of use. The result 

is reduced friction which means 

that there is almost no need for 

lubrication; the Co-Axial calibres 

have long service intervals and 

the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT, 

which is also equipped with a 

silicon balance spring, is delivered 

with a four-year warranty. 

The OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 

8605/8615 is the first in the family 

to be equipped with a GMT 

complication. Its GMT hand has 

a diamond-polished red arrow, 

making it easy to track time in a 

second time zone or GMT display. 

Intriguingly, the GMT hand can also 

be used for compass orientation: 

when the watch is held parallel 

to the ground with its hour hand 

pointed in the direction of the sun, 

the GMT hand, when it is adjusted 

to the same time on the 24-hour 

GMT display, will indicate north in 

the northern hemisphere.
