OAK FLATS PUBLIC SCHOOL
Principal’s Message 8 NOVEMBER 2012 - Term 4 - Week 5
I was most impressed this week when a member of the public
complimented our wonderful K-2 children for their behaviour on the
Balarang excursion. Our students were a fabulous audience during
the Balarang performance and they walked to and from the school
responsibly and safely. Such beautiful behaviour is a credit to the
children and the teachers who accompanied them. It certainly is a
proud moment when members of our community are suitably
impressed. Well done, everyone!
Congratulations to all of the students who continue working to the
best of their ability and, in particular, to those students who are
gaining their gold level awards. At last Monday’s assembly, we
awarded 30 students with gold awards. Gold Level is a fabulous
achievement. Each year, approximately 30% of our school students
achieve this level. These students work diligently in classrooms,
consistently follow our school’s Code of Conduct and Code of
Excellence, always display good manners and proudly represent our
school while at school and in the wider community. We are
extremely proud of each and every recipient. Great work!
Presentation Day: As reported earlier this term, the organisation
around the Presentation Day Assemblies this year has changed. In
the past we have held separate assemblies for each stage within
our school. Previous feedback from families suggested that it can
be difficult to arrange work schedules when children are involved in
more than one assembly. It was with this in mind that we arranged
to host two assemblies this year. We have also scheduled the
assemblies on the same day to minimise disruption for families. Due
to recent organisational matters, we have had to change the time
of the K-2 Assembly slightly from what was previously advertised.
The assemblies are as follows:
Tuesday 18 December
3-6 Presentation Assembly 9.15 – 11.00 (Junior COLA)
K-2 Presentation Assembly 12.00 – 1.15 (School Hall)
Kindergarten Orientation: Our Kindergarten Orientation Program
began this week with a playgroup session organised by Mrs Allen.
The session was well attended with all children enjoying their
experience in ‘big school’. Next Tuesday we will be holding two
information sessions for parents/carers at 9.15am and/or 6.15pm.
These information sessions will cover subjects such as school
routines, safety, student welfare, uniforms, times, school
procedures and student needs. We look forward to meeting our
new kindergarten families to welcome them into our school and
community.
School Uniform: I recently reported that the school’s Uniform Policy
had been completed and is available on our school website. After
extensive communication with families via surveys in 2011 and
discussions with the P&C and Uniform Committee, it was decided
that three new items would be available for sale through our school
office for our uniform in 2013.
The three items are suitable for both boys and girls and consist of:
Microfibre bottle green and gold zip jacket with school logo $35
Microfibre bottle green track pants with gold piping $25
Microfibre bottle green shorts $15
Currently we are awaiting the arrival of the new items. To assist
families with purchasing uniforms for 2013 we will attach an order
form to our school newsletter in the coming weeks for all uniform
items available through our school office. This system may prevent
large volumes of people visiting our office at any one time. Office staff
will then organise the items as per the order form and distribute them
to children as promptly as possible.
If purchasing shoes for the 2013 school year, please be aware that the
school uniform is black shoes accompanied by white socks. Black
school shoes are available from a variety of sources. The school hat
will also be expected to be worn by all students. Please support the
school to ensure that our students are in correct uniform.
Oak Flats High School Uniform: The Oak Flats High School Uniform is
currently on display outside the 6M classroom for students and
families to view. Information for purchase of the uniforms can be
located on the uniform display board and/or through contact with
Oak Flats High School. There will be a special school uniform sales
evening at Lowes Stockland Shellharbour on Tuesday 11th December
3:30-7pm for a 15% discount.
Woolworths & Coles Vouchers: Students diligently collected
thousands of Woolworths and Coles vouchers for our school during
the second semester this year. With Woolworths vouchers our school
was able to purchase individual whiteboards, markers and rubbers for
every student K-6; fully equipped Mathematics Kits for hands on
activities; environmental equipment such as gloves and watering
cans; scientific discovery tools including a digital microscope and
magnifying glasses and several guided reading packs for our senior
students. These are wonderful resources our children will surely enjoy.
Today I excitedly opened an email regarding our Coles vouchers which
have just been counted. We collected 151 577 vouchers! Mrs Smith
was overjoyed at the result and will endeavour to spend these in
collaboration with our teachers over the next few weeks. I must give a
special thank you to Mrs Smith for her effort and time in regard to
both schemes. Collecting and bundling the vouchers was a massive
effort on her behalf. Thank you, Mrs Smith and thank you to each and
every student for collecting and handing in vouchers.
LIVE LIFE WELL - Heart smart—Here are some healthy heart food tips:
use margarine spreads instead of butter choose reduced-fat milk (2% fat or less) for children two years & over
have fish at least twice a week
snack on fresh fruit
don’t add salt to cooking or at the table enjoy a variety of foods especially fruits, vegetables, breads & cereals.
Kids love rewards: Praise healthy habits. This may be snacking on fruit, drinking water and being active. Use treats
like stickers, special games and outings, hugs and praise. Avoid using food as a reward.
No time for breakfast? Try some of these quick breakfasts children can enjoy “on the go”.
reduced-fat yoghurt, or a yoghurt drink reduced-fat milkshake
