STAGE 1 EXCURSION TO UOW SCIENCE CENTRE
On Tuesday our Year 1, Year 2 and 2/3S students visited the UOW Science Centre. We attended a wonderful 'Bubble and
Balloon' show and learnt about stars and the solar system in the 'Planetarium'. We also had fun experimenting with all the
'hands on' exhibits to learn about how machines work.
The teachers were very proud of the behaviour of all the children. Well done girls and boys!
PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Thank you so much to the families and students who have fully supported the locking of some school gates and closing of
others during the school day. The safety of our students is paramount and as a community we value this. Thank you.
Last weekend a number of our fine vocalists performed at Kidsfest. After a delayed start reports were of fine voice and
great pride. Well done to all involved.
On Monday, Tiarn Beasley, Jordan Puckridge, Natalie Mansfield and I participated in the Reconciliation Walk in Shellharbour.
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate
two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High
Court Mabo decision.
The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each
of us can join the national reconciliation effort.
May 27 marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967
referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.
On 3 June, 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists
today. This recognition paved the way for land rights called Native Title. 2012 marked the 20th anniversary of the Mabo
decision.
The theme for this year is Let’s Talk Recognition—with a focus on how Australians can better recognise each other, and
recognise the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This has certainly been
discussed in our classrooms and we are proud to have been involved in events such as the Shellharbour Recognition Walk.
WEEKLY SCHEDULING
Learning how to make time for homework, study, chores, part-time jobs and so on is a vital skill for all kids, but it's one that
we need to teach them by example. It's just a Word document, but you can now create your own weekly schedules to whip your
family into shape.
