students. High Point University President, Dr. Nido Qubein, will be the featured
speaker. To accommodate all freshmen and their parents, three tickets will be mailed to
your home in mid-July (one ticket for the new student, two tickets for parents). A live
broadcast will be shown in various locations on campus for any additional guests to enjoy.
A long-standing tradition at High Point University, Opening Convocation brings together faculty and
administrators to welcome new students and to set the stage for their education at High Point. The ceremony
starts with a procession of faculty and administrators in academic regalia. A welcome and introduction to the
class will be conducted by the office of undergraduate admissions. Comments will be made by the vice president
for academic affairs and the president of the Student Government Association. The keynote address will be
given by University President Dr. Nido Qubein. With the Opening Convocation ceremony, the incoming
class begins an exciting educational venture – a learning process that occurs in and beyond the classroom –
culminating in the completion of degree requirements and the traditional Commencement ceremony.
Academics and Honesty:
The High Point University Honor Code Initiation
The mission of High Point University is to provide an
education “grounded in the development of character,
personal responsibility, and a sense of civic duty that
prepares students for leadership, citizenship, and service
in a diverse global community.” The Honor Code is the
cornerstone of an education focused upon the development
of humane instincts and disciplined and created minds
dedicated to lives of leadership and service. High Point
University has chosen to be a liberal arts institution,
to honor its historic relationship to the church and to
emphasize commitment to the highest personal and
community values. The essence of membership in the High
Point University community is set forth in the Honor Code.
The Honor Code is a declaration by the entire community,
students, faculty, staff and alumni, that the honorable
course is the most just course, and therefore the best course.
Signing the Honor Code is far more than a mere pen-andink
ceremony, it is a pledge to work to create a community
of honor and integrity that truly is “counter-cultural”.
Testing
Academic
Ass e ss m ent
All students will be required to participate in
several academic testing sessions throughout
the school year. The purpose of these testing
sessions will be to evaluate the general education
curriculum, student satisfaction, and several other
areas that are important to the operation of High
Point University and the well being of its students.
Further information about these testing sessions
will be provided to you each semester by the Office
of Institutional Research and Assessment.
IMPORTANT NOTICES
Students should take all on-line placement tests by August 3rd, 2009. You will receive the results of all completed tests
with your O-Pak (Orientation Package) on move-in day.
Students who are unable to take the math or reading tests before the August 3rd deadline should still take the test on-line
prior to arrival with the understanding that your O-Pak may be incomplete when you arrive. (Additional opportunities to
complete all placement tests will be provided on Saturday, August 22nd; see schedule on next page).
Because the on-line Spanish test will be closed at midnight on August 3rd, students who do not take this test prior to
August 3rd MUST take it in person on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009.
All placement tests may be accessed at http://placement.highpoint.edu
Please direct all questions regarding placement tests to Dr. Jeff Adams, Director of Institutional Research and Assessment,
(336) 841-4581, jeadams@highpoint.edu.
If you have a diagnosed disability that requires you to have academic accommodations, contact Irene Ingersoll, Assistant
Director of Academic Services and Disability Coordinator, at 336-841-9037.
University Honor Code
PREAMBLE
We, the students of High Point University, believe that honesty and integrity
are essential to student academic development. Therefore, we assert the following:
Every student is honor-bound to abstain from cheating;
Every student is honor-bound to abstain from collusion;
Every student is honor-bound to abstain from plagiarism;
Every student is honor-bound to report a violation of the University Honor Code;
Every member of the University community is expected to be familiar with the Honor Code
24

University Conduct Code
PREAMBLE
We, the students of High Point University, shall
seek excellence in the classroom, on the playing
field, and in positions of leadership and service
across our campus.
As a community of scholars, we shall work
together with faculty to create an environment
conducive to teaching and learning.
As a community of persons, we shall treat
each other with compassion, with dignity, and with
civility – avoiding bigotry, racism, and sexism and
learning from each through the diversity we bring to
High Point.
As persons, we shall be honest and just in all
that we do, recognizing that we can never be greater
than the integrity of our word and deed.
As citizens of a global community, we shall act
responsibly, both on campus and off–governing our
actions not only by our personal needs and desires
but also by a concern for the welfare of others,
for the general good of humankind, and for the
environment upon which we mutually depend.
Recognizing that communities cannot exist
without values and codes of conduct, we shall search
for enduring values; and we shall adhere to those
codes of conduct which have been established by
and for the members of High Point University.
When we leave High Point, we shall leave it
better than we found it – and in support of this
goal, we pledge our loyalty and our service to this
University which we have chosen as our own.
The Nature
of the Academy
First, a college or university is an educationally purposeful community — a place where
faculty and students share academic goals and work together to strengthen teaching and learning on
campus.
Second, a college or university is an open community — a place where freedom of expression is
uncompromisingly protected and where civility is powerfully affirmed.
Third, a college or university is a just community — a place where the sacredness [supreme worth] of
the person is honored and where diversity is aggressively pursued.
Fourth, a college or university is a disciplined community — a place where individuals
accept their obligations to the group and where well-defined governance procedures guide
behavior for the common good.
Fifth, a college or university is a caring community — one in which the well-being of each
member is sensitively supported and where service to others is encouraged.
26
Sixth, a college or university is a celebrative community — one in which the heritage of
the institution is remembered and where rituals affirming both tradition and change are widely shared.

Beyond Orientation
HPU is an extraordinary institution that provides an engaging atmosphere for
its students. While the Orientation Program is designed to provide students with
countless opportunities to meet their peers and get involved, the university also
offers a full calendar of events that students are encouraged to attend. In addition
to some of the highlighted events listed below, members of the freshman class will
have opportunities throughout the first semester to meet fellow freshmen in smaller
settings. The Residence Life Staff organizes “Hall Mixers” that allow small groups
of students to meet other students who live in different residence halls. In locations
ranging from the Slane Center Pool to many of the residence hall lobbies, students
will have the opportunity to be formally introduced, in a casual setting, to other
members of the freshman class. While we are proud of our residence halls, we want
to encourage our students to utilize every inch of our campus and engage in dialogue
with faculty, staff and friends.
