Qubein:The <strong>Commencement</strong>Luncheon is alwaysa special event. Eachyear, Dr. Nido Qubein,<strong>High</strong> <strong>Point</strong> <strong>University</strong>President, addresses thecandidates for graduationand their guests. Dr.Qubein is recipient ofthe highest awards givenfor professional speakersincluding the Cavett(known as the Oscar ofprofessional speaking),and many other honorsincluding the Ellis Island Medal of Honor andthe Horatio Alger Award for DistinguishedAmericans. He serves on the boards of severalnational corporations including La-Z-Boy andBB&T. He is also the author of many booksand audio programs, and teaches the President’sSeminar on Life Skills to all freshmen at HPU.Tickets:Complimentary tickets are required for this event,and must be picked up in advance. Each candidatefor graduation is permitted a maximum of threetickets (the graduate and two guests). Attendeeswill be seated on a first-come basis. BaccalaureateFriday, May 2, <strong>2008</strong> – 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.Wesley Memorial United Methodist ChurchDr. Thomas G. Long:Dr. Thomas G. Long, a Presbyterianminister, is the Bandy Professor ofPreaching at Candler School ofTheology, Emory <strong>University</strong>, Atlanta,Georgia. Before going to Emory, Dr.Long taught preaching at ErskineTheological Seminary, ColumbiaTheological Seminary, and PrincetonTheological Seminary.Dr. Long has published a numberof books on preaching and biblicalinterpretation, including a widely used textbook,The Witness of Preaching (Westminster John Knox)and two biblical commentaries, Hebrews (JohnKnox) and Matthew (Westminster John Knox).His book Beyond the Worship Wars: Building Vitaland Faithful Worship (Alban) assesses the currenttensions between contemporary and traditionalworship, and a recent book, Testimony: TalkingOurselves Into Being Christian (Jossey-Bass), exploreshow people speak of God outside of church.He is married to Kimberly Long, who is also aPresbyterian minister.General Information:Baccalaureate is for <strong>High</strong> <strong>Point</strong> <strong>University</strong>candidates for graduation, their families and guests,and university faculty, staff, students, and specialguests. It is not open to the general public.Tickets are not required for Baccalaureate. Guestswill be seated on a first-come basis.The Baccalaureate ecumenicalservice is an occasion ofthanksgiving and celebration. Itoriginated at Oxford <strong>University</strong>in 1432 as a required part ofgraduation. The service is led byHPU personnel, and the music isprovided by the HPU Singers andthe Chapel Choir. Tom Long is theguest preacher, and Lee Greenwoodwill perform.Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church islocated on the corner of Chestnut Drive andWestchester Drive (1225 Chestnut Drive) in <strong>High</strong><strong>Point</strong>. Parking will be available at the church. Graduation CeremonySaturday, May 3, <strong>2008</strong> – 9:00 a.m.-NoonHPU, Roberts Hall LawnSupreme Court JusticeClarence Thomas:Supreme Court JusticeClarence Thomas hasbecome one of the mostinfluential men in thecountry.Before his Supreme Courtappointment by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush in1991, he was involvedin several avenues of theUnited States government,including serving asassistant attorney generalof Missouri, legislativeassistant to SenatorJohn Danforth, assistantsecretary for civil rights inthe U.S. Department of Education and chairman of theU.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.He became a judge of the United States Court ofAppeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in1990.Although Thomas began his education with theintent on becoming a priest – attending St. JohnVianney Minor Seminary and later the ImmaculateConception Seminary in Missouri – his careerobjectives eventually changed. He later enrolledin the Massachusetts-based College of the HolyCross. After graduating cum laude from Holy Cross,he went on to earn a juris doctorate from Yale LawSchool in 1974.Thomas is the author of My Grandfather’s Son, amemoir of his life. Graduation Ceremony ContinuedGraduation rehearsal will be held in theHayworth Fine Arts Center at 2:00 p.m. onFriday, May 2.Line-up for the Graduation Ceremony willbe on the Kester International Promenade at8:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. It is importantfor all graduates to be present at this time forinclusion in the line of march.<strong>Commencement</strong> caps, gowns, and hoodsmay be ordered through the HPU bookstore.HPU campus: 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. until4:00 p.m. on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. until3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Budd Family Campus:4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday,and Thursday. The HPU bookstore will beopen until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2. OnSaturday, May 3, the bookstore will open at7:30 a.m. and remain open until one hourafter the ceremony. Make arrangements withthe bookstore (336.841.9221) to order yourregalia before March 14, <strong>2008</strong>.Master’s degree candidates must returnall regalia to the bookstore immediatelyfollowing the Graduation Ceremony.
