Uniting the Grimsby Institute Group
October 2011
Grimsby Institute
offers super sonic
experience to
pupils
Pupils in primary and secondary
schools were blown away as the
Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC)
paid a visit to the Grimsby Institute
on the 6th and 7th of October
2011.
The car, which has been in the design
stages for the past three years, is
central to the Bloodhound project
whose mission is to break the current
land speed record of 763mph.
The thrust created by the Bloodhound SSC is similar to that of Concorde’s
famous Olympus 593 jet engines and is powered by a Eurofighter-
Typhoon jet engine, which is bolted above a hybrid rocket.
The Bloodhound SSC has been designed to run at astonishing speeds
of up to 1,050 mph. However, Project Director, Richard Noble, realises
the importance of this innovation with regard to education and today’s
youth, Richard says:
“The primary objective of the project is to inspire the next generation
to pursue careers in Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths - by
demonstrating how they can be harnessed to achieve the seemingly
impossible.”
This is why the Bloodhound education programme was made available
to all pupils in primary and secondary school, and to all students in
further and higher education.
Aaron serves up a Yorkshire Banquet
Seventeen-year-old Aaron Temple, who is studying for a hospitality qualification
at YCC, has cooked up a dish that has been chosen to be served at the Yorkshire
Banquet next March.
The Yorkshire Banquet is loosely based on the BBC’s successful TV programme, The
Great British Menu, and the winning chefs will see their dishes served to 700 delegates
of the Federation of Small Business banquet which is being held at the Spa in
Scarborough.
Four students from YCC took part in the competition, with Aaron’s starter of Pork
Terrine being chosen to be served at the prestigious event.
Graham Towse, Vice Principal of
Curriculum & Quality at the Institute,
is optimistic about what this once
in a lifetime opportunity offered to
students, as Graham explained:
“The Grimsby Institute has been
delighted that we were able to host the
Bloodhound Supersonic Car project
this year. The project is a fantastic
way to educate young people in how
a wide range of Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
based disciplines come together to
create a world beating product.”
“We hope that by bringing the car to
Grimsby and inviting young people
from all over the region we have been
able to inspire a whole generation
to pursue STEM subjects at School,
College, in Higher Education and
through Apprenticeships and they
will aspire to be the Engineers and
Technologists of the future.”
New group sets innovative
administration processes
Grimsby Institute Group Administrators have come together to create a standard
set of administration guidelines, tools and templates that can be used across
the Group, which aim to make the lives of our many administrators as easy as
possible.
This new group was the idea of Katie Mille, PA to Alan Bird – Associate Principal, who
explained the benefits that she hoped it would bring to the Grimsby Institute Group:
“I think it’s really important that as a Group we have a set of guidelines that all staff
can follow to make sure that we’re sending out the same letters, fax headers – even
answering the phone the same way, which is all going to help reinforce our corporate
identity.
“We really hope that all administration staff subscribe to this idea, as SMT are behind
us 100%, and apart from the help this is going to be to everyone, it’s also a great way of
meeting other staff who are doing a similar job to yourself.”
There will now be Useful Templates icon available on all staff desktops. For more
information on how you can contribute to the new group, please contact Katie Mille on
Sport staff
endure ‘Hell on
the Humber’
Sports Staff recently took part in a
twelve-hour endurance run, back and
forth over the Humber Bridge “Hell on
the Humber”.
Vicky Thomas, Marie Genney and Sandy
Walster clocked up a staggering 90 miles
between them during the overnight
endurance challenge. Vicky said:
“The ‘Hell on the Humber’ was a real Sport
Department team effort. Without the
support of Jill Thomas and Gordon Firby we
would have not been able to keep going for
12 hours. The cups of hot tea and massages
were very much appreciated, especially in
the early hours of the morning!”
So don't just be a
visitor to this planet,
try and make a
difference!!!
China launch
for Grimsby
student
website
A new student experience website
connecting Grimsby Institute’s
growing number of Chinese
exchange students and partner
universities in southern China,
has been given the seal of
approval on the other side of the
world.
G-Life (www.glife.uk.com) was created by a group of
visiting Media students, currently on a three-month stay at Grimsby Institute and as
the title denotes the developing link between Grimsby and the city of Guangzhou in
Guangdong Province.
The innovative site, updated daily by media students in both locations, was
introduced to Guangzhou students by the Institute’s Director of International, Andrew
McKinnon, on a recruitment visit to the region.
Over 200 students attended the presentation at South China Agricultural University,
one of the Institute’s partners in the eight-million population city.
The G-Life site is the focus of student work during a 12-week programme which
includes filming and editing as part of their TV training, radio and web-related
marketing in a real business environment at RBP International - who shaped the new
site with students as part of a digital marketing syllabus.
Content created by the visiting group
is also submitted to local TV station
Channel 7 and the Institute’s own
website.
Commenting on the impact of the
website from Guangzhou, Andrew
McKinnon said: ”International
experience for students is big on the
agenda down here. There is significant
interest in the exchange programme
and the G-Life website brings the
whole project together.
“Words, pictures and videos from
activities in the UK and China are
uploaded daily, allowing fellow students,
friends, families and their university
tutors to track their progress at any time.”
The exchange programme, which
is project managed by former Press
Association senior multi-media
producer and video journalist, Emma
Turner, has been such a success that
there are plans to launch an Indian
version in January to satisfy interest
from a group of Media exchange
students expected at the Institute in
January and February.
students have been doing at
International
launch new
Finnish exchange
programme
A brand new project has been launched
by the Grimsby Institute in association
with our Finnish partners Amisto and
Edupoli.
This new programme has seen a group of
students come to the UK for one month
to study with our Health and Social Care
team, as part of an ongoing exchange
with their Finnish counterparts, as student
Ilya Makela explained:
“I’m studying Practical Nursing in our
hometown and we can specialise in different
subjects like childcare, the elderly or mental
health. I want to become a Paramedic.
“We’ve been here for one month now and
learning about things like communication
and health and safety, and it’s very similar
to studying in Finland, just in a different
language, but we have noticed how some of
the laws surrounding health and social care
are very different in the UK.”
Director of International, Andrew
McKinnon, has led the International
team in this new venture for the Grimsby
Institute, which now as students added:
“Alongside this programme, there are also
plans for us to get involved in an innovative
scheme to create a new tier to the Finnish
health workforce and this we see as the
beginning with a pilot group.”
“They have combined their studies with
English Language training which is
important for Finnish students who want to
work internationally and more and more in
their domestic market. It is also a reflection
of the respect other countries have for the UK
health system and its training methods.
“We had a plan to develop health-related
tuition for Finland and we have now made it
happen,”.

more employable, and ultimately help
them to find work. Whether that’s going
on to work with an employer or taking the
entrepreneurial route.
“By that I mean they may already do
something that, with the right mentoring
and coaching, they could grow into
something more substantial, and use it as a
way of becoming self employed.
“We will also be working with employers to
make sure that the services and advice we
are providing is what employers in our area
actually want.”
• How to create a CV
• Help with applying online
Halls of Residence
Our Estates and Accommodation Departments have carried out an extensive
programme of refurbishment work at the Group’s Halls of Residences over the past
few months, aiming to improve the buildings located on Bargate in Grimsby, as
Accommodation Officer, Lewis McKinnon, explained:
“Since the end of May, the Towers and Welholme House have seen extensive refurbishments across
all aspects of the buildings. The Towers required a much needed upgrade due to the age and heavy
usage of the building, so it’s been fully redecorated in all communal areas and bedrooms with a
paint scheme to bring it into alignment with the rest of the Group.
“Student artwork from Westward Ho has been mounted, and is now on display around both
buildings. The kitchen and student common rooms have also been completely revamped along
with modern energy efficient equipment.”
Some of the works that have taken place include;
The Towers
• Refurbishment of the kitchen, shower facilities and toilets
• All rooms redecorated
• Painting & Decorating to Ground Floor, 1st Floor and 2nd Floor
corridors and common areas
• All ceilings painted
• Landscaping to the gardens
• Upgrade to all emergency lighting
• Lift service remediation
• Repairs to guttering and downpipes
Welholme House
• Coach House completely redecorated with additional carpeting
and vinyl flooring throughout
• Painting and decorating to all common areas
• Full programme of refurbishment taking place to all bedrooms
• Upgrades to all emergency lighting
• Timber fence completed as part of planning condition
• Repairs to all guttering and downpipes
Lewis continued:
“I’d like to convey my full gratitude to the Estates Team in making all of this possible, and it was so
refreshing to see everybody that has worked on the project take such pride in their work.”
Hope you had a great Halloween?
By Rev George Huysse-Smith
One of my favourite times of year is Halloween.
That may sound odd coming from a Christian,
but when you remember I’m a big heavy metal
fan, it’s not so surprising at all.
Halloween, as it is celebrated today, often seems
to me to be a celebration of the gothic and metal
subcultures – people wear black clothes, with
white and black make-up, they listen to heavier
music, and there are lots of imageries of death. In
a sense, it seems to be a time that non-goths, enjoy
dressing as and playing at being goths for the day.
With all this in mind, I don’t see why some people get so worried about Halloween and
even consider it to be a celebration of darkness and evil. Clearly, modern Halloween
festivities are nothing of the sort. They are, at least 99% of the time, simply an excuse
to have a party, the dressing up and imagery is nothing more than dressing up and
imagery. There’s no implicit evil connotations attached to such behaviour. People simply
don’t dress up and go to Halloween parties to encourage evil, they go to have a laugh
and to have a good time.
Halloween today is mainly a secular event, with no association with religiosity at all.
But, you may be interested to know that today’s Halloween festivities are a mixture of
Christianity, paganism and modern secular consumer market forces.
Halloween comes from the idea of remembering the dead, which is something people
of all religions and none do anyway. No-one forgets their deceased loved ones, and
Halloween originally was a day to remember them.
November 1st is All Saints Day and November 2nd is All Souls day in the Christian
calendar. Years ago, ‘even’ was used as a way of saying ‘evening’. So the word ‘Halloween’
was put together as a shorter way to say ‘all hallows even’; that is, the evening before All
Hallows Day (hallows was a term used to mean ‘saints’; that is, all the faithful departed).
Therefore Halloween refers to the day before Christians remember all those who have
died.
As Halloween is linked with commemorating the dead, it’s unsurprising the festival is
now associated with other aspects related to death. Businesses have simply jumped
onto this idea and associated Halloween with products related to death as a way simply
to sell more of their products.
So I really don’t see why some people get so het up about Halloween. Halloween
activities today are just ways for people to have fun and personally I don’t see what’s
wrong with that at all; so, I hope you all did have a very fun Halloween indeed.
presents:
A Christmas Criminal Caper
- murder mystery meal
Thursday 8th December
The Gallery Restaurant
only £20 per head
A sumptuous three-course dinner is being
hosted in our very own Gallery Restaurant,
the courses are interspersed with a tale of
deceit, fakery, misdirection and probably
a dead body or two. (We’ll keep the dead
bodies in the freezer....well away from any
vegetables...)
A Christmas Criminal Caper will be performed
by our very own staff, and its for you to spot
the clues and the red herrings. I’m reliably
informed that herring isn’t on the menu.
The tale will contain some good individuals
and some dodgy characters. As there is a
death, Health & Safety may also be involved,
but don’t let that put you off. It’ll be....a
scream.....
Places are limited and to reserve your table,
for more information, or to request a copy of
the menu, please call The Gallery Restaurant
on (01472) 276137 or visit www.thegalleryrestaurant.co.uk/
