7.10 Coupled Reservoir Simulation<br />

<strong>and</strong> Geophysical Surveys<br />

DOE supported research to assess <strong>the</strong> feasibility <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g “hidden” or “bl<strong>in</strong>d”<br />

geo<strong>the</strong>rmal reservoirs us<strong>in</strong>g a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g electrical exploration<br />

methods <strong>and</strong> reservoir simulations to predict fluid flow with<strong>in</strong> a geo<strong>the</strong>rmal<br />

system <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g geophysical signal generated by that flow. 305-306 Beowawe<br />

<strong>and</strong> Dixie Valley were used as test cases. The study 1) <strong>the</strong>oretically <strong>in</strong>vestigated<br />

<strong>the</strong> feasibility <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g “hidden” geo<strong>the</strong>rmal reservoirs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Range<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g electrical surveys, 2) identified operat<strong>in</strong>g geo<strong>the</strong>rmal fields <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bas<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Range for which both electrical exploration surveys <strong>and</strong> adequate reservoir<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation are available, <strong>and</strong> 3) exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> correlation between <strong>the</strong> subsurface<br />

geo<strong>the</strong>rmal reservoir <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface electrical surveys us<strong>in</strong>g detailed numerical<br />

model<strong>in</strong>g. The studies established <strong>the</strong> potential utility <strong>of</strong> coupl<strong>in</strong>g reservoir<br />

simulation <strong>and</strong> electrical surveys.<br />

DOE also supported <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a statistical approach to <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>the</strong><br />

different model constra<strong>in</strong>ts provided by disparate geophysical, geological, <strong>and</strong><br />

geochemical data <strong>in</strong> a rigorous <strong>and</strong> consistent manner by formal jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>version.<br />

<strong>Research</strong>ers identified how this approach could be applied at Dixie Valley <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Salton Sea <strong>Geo<strong>the</strong>rmal</strong> Field. 307<br />
