We perform complete diagnostic evaluations to determine the cause and management of all ENT problems. In<br />

The University of Chicago Medical Center’s unique nasal and sinus program offers second opinions and consultations<br />
from our world-renowned physicians for chronic sinusitis disorders. In a comprehensive, coordinated visit, our ENT<br />
specialists can evaluate a variety of sinus problems, including: nasal stuffiness, recurrent infection, loss of smell, chronic<br />
sinusitis, tumors and nasal polyps.<br />
Our multidisciplinary staff includes experts in otolaryngology, allergy, radiology, neurology, infectious diseases and<br />
pulmonology. During an office visit, our physicians will review your medical records and diagnostic tests. Through this<br />
comprehensive evaluation, our experts will assess your condition and recommend treatment options that will best suit<br />
your needs. If you need additional appointments with our various experts, we will coordinate follow-up visits.<br />
The University of Chicago surgeons regularly treat allergy problems. Treatment approaches for allergy include medical<br />
and surgical options. Our physicians are involved in important research on the effectiveness of various methods for treating<br />

The <strong>Head</strong> and <strong>Neck</strong> Cancer Program at the University of Chicago Medical Center are pioneering approaches to treat<br />
patients with a wide variety of head and neck tumors at all stages of the disease. These include cancers of the sinuses,<br />
mouth, tongue, tonsils, thyroid, throat, voice box and upper esophagus. Our experts utilize a variety of treatment<br />
options, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The aim of our treatment philosophy is to preserve organs and<br />
retain function while improving survival and quality of life for our patients. Our surgeons work with other disciplines to<br />
ensure early detection and the best possible care and treatment. In addition to cancer treatment, our experts provide<br />

Pediatric <strong>Otolaryngology</strong><br />

Our pediatric otolaryngologists work with a team of nurses, audiologists, speech and swallowing pathologists and other<br />
healthcare professionals at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital to provide a multidisciplinary approach to<br />
the care of children with ear, nose and throat problems. These disorders range from common problems affecting children<br />
(e.g., ear, tonsil and sinus infections, as well as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea) to more complex problems (e.g.,<br />
congenital hearing loss, neck masses and complicated airway problems). The pediatric cochlear implant team is made<br />
up of surgeons, audiologists, speech pathologists, child life specialists, a social worker, a geneticist, a developmental<br />
pediatrician and a psychologist. The pediatric cochlear implant program at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of<br />
Chicago has the tools to bring clear spoken language and enjoyable musical sounds to the deaf child’s silent world. Here<br />
at the University of Chicago Medical Center and Comer Children’s Hospital we understand the physical and emotional<br />
needs of children and encourage the informed participation of parents in all aspects of patient care.<br />

Our physicians treat diseases and other problems of the inner ear and skull-base that are related to the nervous system,<br />
including tumors. We offer the full spectrum of treatments for hearing loss and other abnormalities of the ear. Our services<br />
include: Otoplasties (surgical reconstruction of ear deformities), Cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids<br />
for adults and children, treatment of middle ear diseases and infections, including otosclerosis and cholesteatoma, treatment<br />
of acoustic neuroma, and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for hearing and balance, as well as rehabilitative<br />
technology and services.<br />

The skilled audiology staff is experienced working with all populations: newborns, children, adults and seniors. Our<br />

The University of Chicago Voice Center provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to children and adults<br />
with voice disorders. Our patients include professional and non-professional voice users. Professional voice users include:<br />
singers, actors, teachers, attorneys, radio and television personalities, clergy, auctioneers and athletes. The most<br />
common disorders are vocal cord edema, nodules, polyps, granulomas, cysts, vocal cord paralysis, voice effects of<br />
Parkinsons. Less common disorders include: spasmodic dysphonia, vocal cord dysfunction, papillomas and vocal tics.<br />
The Center for Speech and Swallowing Disorders provides evaluation and treatment of communication and swallowing<br />
disorders in children and adults. Speech and swallowing disorders can result from cancer and other diseases, stroke,<br />
surgery, or congenital deformity. Treatment may include surgical or medical approaches, as determined by consultation<br />
between the physicians and speech-language pathologist.<br />
Our team performs video stroboscopies, transnasal esophagoscopies without general anesthesia, oropharyngeal motility<br />
(OPM) studies in conjunction with radiology, videoendoscopy for velopharyngeal disorders and/or videofluoroscopy<br />
for velopharyngeal disorders in conjunction with radiology and voice prosthesis placement and speech training for voice<br />
restoration after total laryngectomy.<br />
