In
Loving Memory
I was JLCC President
at the time we hired
Barbara. She was such
a breath of fresh air
always telling it like it
was! I will miss sharing
a Hamlin Pharmacy
patty melt and fries with
her and discussing the
"issues" of the day!
-Pat Eldridge
Barbara Baker –
I miss your smile, your orange slices in your candy dish that sits on your
desk. The beautiful smile, with that gorgeous white hair. Love you. -BeBe
Barbara, I love and miss your smiling face and spunky spirit! Your life ended
too soon. I’m finally going to get married next month. I wish you could be there
to celebrate with us. You always know how to have a good time.
– Jacqueline Replogle
Barbara Jane Baker
10/21/46 - 9/18/12
I will miss Barbara so much and the wonderful
stories she told of cooking with my husband so
many years before I even knew either of them. She
always knew the best recipes and had easy meal
ideas for my kids. Every time I went to the office she
had a new recipe for me to try (and more often
than not is was from some JL cookbook). Barbara
loved the League, she loved what we did and believed
so fully in our mission and according to her
she even almost risked her life when out office was
at Heritage Park. I will miss her stories! I will
miss her. –Katherine Barrera
I will be forever grateful for Barbara's frank and sometimes
painfully honest opinions. She was always there for
me. And I will never be able to eat a candy orange slice
without thinking of her! -Barbara Milfelt
I have known Barbara “BB” since
2003. I have fond memories of her in
and outside the League. Memories like –
her “hey girl” welcome every time I called,
her chuckle over a funny (and sometimes
dirty) joke, her view of “The View” and
our many conversations on life and happenings
of JL. But my fondest memory is
the sincere and deeply meaningful conversations
we had of how much we love our
husbands. David was her everything! I’ll
never forget the quiet and deep conversation
we had that day, which was a side of few
experienced. I will greatly miss that twinkle
in her eye and fierce loyalty she had for not
only the League, but for her friendships.
God Bless her!
-Alissa
A woman of extreme strength, courage
and love, Who was beautiful, spunky,
loving and chatty is now peaceful and
free as a dove, Someone from who our
admiration was built around. Her
friendship and dedication is everlasting.
Barbara you will be deeply missed but
never forgotten.
Much Love,
Carrie M. Gilley
Barbara-I will always remember you from my many visits to the League office
during my reign as Publishing Chair-you were always so helpful and accommodating
to my seemingly endless requests. I never got a chance to tell you thank you or
how much I enjoyed our lengthy conversations about everything & absolutely nothing.
Thank you my friend. You will be missed
dearly. –Kate Clower
Barbara and I shared a love for
Pomeranians and emails. Throughout my
League career I have held positions that required
that I work very close with her; however, my
work schedule never coincided with her office
hours. Our solution was email. For me it was
the following words that will always hold a special
place in my heart because it was her lingo:
“Will Do. 10-4. Thanks, BB”
I will miss you dearly BB.
Love, V
I will miss you calling me “darlin” and talking
about Hawaii. Aloha mau loa Barbara,
-Roe
If I could Hug you one last time I would hold
you tight. If I could hear your funny laugh
again I would giggle along with you just like
always. Thank you for always taking care of
me and encouraging me. You were the biggest
cheerleader for Junior League of Corpus
Christi. I know you are up in Heaven making
all the Angels laugh and organizing all the
closets. You will be missed my Special Friend
Barbara. -Renee Solomon
Barbara was my sanity when I was the PR
chair and then again with Bayfest. Her welcoming
spirit made going to the League office
fun, we spent hours working together and talking.
I even did a few one on one wine tastings
with her. She was truly a fun and loving
woman. When I would bring my dog to the
office she would shower him with her chips,
snacks and crackers. I think he gained 10 lbs
visiting her but by George he knew when we
drove in the parking lot who he was going to see
and couldn’t contain his excitement. She will be
deeply missed. -Chrissy Martin
BB (as we called her) was our rock. Boards, chairs, committees might have
changed, but BB was our constant go to person. She truly was our lighthouse. I
loved her dearly and will miss her! -Katie McCabe

Letter from the President
At an early age, my grandmother began to instill in her grandchildren that one must learn to consider others more important than oneself, to appreciate
that every person we encounter has value and that a healthy community is a shared responsibility incumbent upon all within it. She liked to emphasize
this with her favorite Thoreau quote, “Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something.” Always we listened with great intensity because
invariably she asked that we repeat her quotes. I firmly believe that her passion for volunteering coupled with the enthusiastic encouragement
from friends and Junior League colleagues played an instrumental role in my decision to accept the position of president of this great organization. It is a
decision that has provided the opportunity to work with many formidable current and future leaders of this community and I am honored to have
served as your representative for the 2011-2012 League year.
The journey into our 68 th year will forever be remembered as the year of sustainable change
and transition. In this year we ushered in a revamped New Member curriculum, we reinstituted
the fund development committee and our members are experiencing a renewed enthusiasm for
hands-on service projects with the return of the Helping Hands Committee. We successfully,
with fun as our directive and much momentum as a driving force, held our inaugural fundraiser,
Run Amuck. Led by a strong, unwavering committee and buoyed with wide-spread
community support this new fundraiser exceeded all expectations.
Adriana Martinez (left)
Pictured with Delly Beekman, AJLI President
Most importantly during our transition we immersed ourselves in the Strategic Roadmap and
are already experiencing many dynamic changes which will continue to impact our League for
many years to come. Under the direction of an amazing leadership team we are creating the
map that will serve to guide our members as we navigate the transitional phases recommended
by the Action Learning Team.
Our organization is unique and no one fundraiser or project can easily define its successes, instead we look to the women who embody the mission
that is JLCC. In this year we were blessed with a wise loyal selfless board, whose shared passion of our mission served as a compass for us all. Their
work has proven impactful and important and their achievements will be felt for years to come. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity to serve
alongside them as president particularly during this momentous time of change.
In the 2011 issue of TIDES I wrote that together we might embark upon a journey which celebrates our combined talents, diverse opinions and our
collective power of service. Not a moment passed that these elements were not ever-present and working to create needed change.
To witness the individual dedication and commitment of each League member gives me great pause to know that we, as a Junior League, are capable
of profound change. It happens in that moment when you have altered the outcome of someone‖s story for the betterment of their future and that of
their family. Your volunteer efforts are reaching many in our community and they know they are being served in meaningful ways. Congratulations to
each of you and thank you for your individual accomplishments, you have made a discernible difference in our community and the impact will forever
be felt by those who need it most. On behalf of those whose lives you have touched, thank you, thank you for your desire to serve in ways that create
the greatest impact and produce lasting change. This journey continues, be proud of your contributions and know that this community is forever grateful
for each of you.
As we reflect on the year and consider the careful way in which we have planned and executed our tasks we recognize that, as in life, instead of relying
on our newly drawn maps we continue to redraw and update as necessary in order to transition and move our league forward in meaningful
ways. What matters most is that the final destination does not outweigh the significance of the journey itself. Those who we have encountered along
the way, those who have added value, who have given of their time and talent will always make the journey worthwhile.
It is true that we embark upon most journeys with a map, a plan, a sense of purpose. And while we may deviate at various points and perhaps detour
for new points of interest or to catch up with old friends or to make new ones, the map continues to serve as our guide. The reason is simply this; for
any journey, human nature needs a map otherwise the tendency is to walk in circles. With no map, no compass, essentially no way to determine landmarks
to help us throughout our journey, we will return to our initial starting point. And while in many circumstances it becomes necessary to go backwards
or weave around to someplace you have already been, any journey worth taking needs a map, draw one, people will follow and your journey
will be truly blessed.
In gratitude,
Adriana Martinez
Today – June 1 st , 2012…The 2011-2012 League Year is officially over.
At this time last year I had just wrapped up my placement on the P.A.CT. Committee (now known as Helping Hands) where
we accomplished some pretty remarkable projects including 2 very successful donation drives for the Rainbow Room, a very
well attended (over 2,500) Free Family Fun Day at the “Christmas Around the World” exhibit at the Art Museum as well as
Done-in-a-Project at the Ronald McDonald House where we painted, power-washed, planted and provided some much
needed supplies for the 25 guest rooms. To say I felt satisfied with the work we had completed as a committee would be an
enormous understatement. I came off of the 2010-2011 League year on an all time high!
That high felt wonderful – no doubt, but for the 2011-2012 League year I was looking for
a change in pace, a change in role…or just a change altogether. I had started my campaign
for a Publishing Committee placement several months before the League year
ended and was beside myself when I got the call from Adriana asking if I was interested
in chairing the committee. There was no hesitation in my response – YES, I‖ll do
it!
Again – at this time last year my stint as Publishing Chairman had only just begun. No
real work to be done until about August – so in the meantime I spent my free time
planning my daughters 1 st birthday party which was still months away. The month of
August and my daughters 1 st birthday both arrived much faster than I had realized or
planned for….it was time for me and the Publishing Committee to get busy to say the
least!
There are 5 main “business” components to Publishing – publishing the member directory,
3 issues of Currents and then finally TIDES. All have taken on a new look this year – Currents and TIDES were both designed
entirely in-house! I can‖t begin to calculate the number of hours devoted to selling ads for and designing these publications
– it was no doubt a much larger undertaking than I first thought, but I learned a lot along the way and the positive response
to the ―new look‖ has been overwhelming!
It must also be mentioned though – there is so much more to Publishing than just designing and printing newsletters and an
annual magazine! As Publishing Chair you also take on the ―unofficial” role of photographer, paparazzi and social blogger and
it is in those roles that I had the most fun! The New Members and their Advisors welcomed me with open arms to their
meetings and social events – it was so much fun getting to know them as they learned about the League and how to be a
good volunteer. At Run Amuck I ran the course with my camera in hand side-by-side with the participants trying to get the
best action shots! At the Corpus Christi Food Bank, Metro Ministries Rainbow
House and Kids in the Kitchen Fitness Fiesta I was able to capture the
essence of what the Junior League of Corpus Christi is all about – promoting
volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving our
community. It was through my camera lens that I truly ―got it‖ and saw the
―big picture‖ of what the Junior League of Corpus Christi exists for.
My eyes have been opened…our League is full of amazing – capable
women. Together as a membership – along with our Community Partners
we are able to achieve so-so much!
It has been my pleasure to serve you this year.
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
July 2011 marked the first event for Kids in the Kitchen. We participated in
the Grand Opening Celebration of Amistad Community Health Care Clinic‖s newly renovated Pediatric Wing. KIK committee
provided fruit kabobs, vegetable cups, and trail mix for the children and made sure our booth visitors (children & their parents)
got an explanation of the benefits of making better food choices.
In September we began our monthly visits with the children at the recreation center at the La Armada Housing Authority. This
is a government subsidized housing complex with wonderfully bright eyed children. The children were happy to see us and
enthusiastic about our lessons. The “Ladies in the Red Shirts” stopped by in October, November, January, and again in February
and reinforced the importance of better food choices & activities to encourage staying physically fit for a lifetime.
In December 2011 Kids in the Kitchen contributed $1000 to KBay for their annual BIKES FOR KIDS give away. Volunteers arrived
at 4AM on December 20 th to begin the set up of 170 bikes. The children (and their parents) were taught of the importance
of wearing a helmet, fitted to their new bike & helmet, took pictures with Santa under the snow (from a machine), and
had snacks, hot chocolate & coffee. The goal for 2011 is a minimum of 200 new bikes and helmets for needy children.
In the spring of 2012 the Kids in the Kitchen committee marched on toward the Wild for Wellness Fitness Fiesta, a citywide
community event held on March 31, 2012. Our main attraction was Jump with Jill, the Rock Star Nutritionist. We were excited
to partner with Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. Their nursing & kinesiology students completed health assessments
and their basketball team provided much enjoyment and entertainment as they mingled with the kids and demonstrated
their athleticism.
Among the vendors who participated were local fitness experts, HEB cooking demos, high school drill & cheer teams, ball
room, salsa dancing groups, community gardening, surf camp, running/cycling/triathlon clubs, CC Hooks, CC IceRays, CCFC,
DelMar dental students and their vision/hearing students, and a showcase of “Healthy Food Options” from 5 local restaurants.
There were nearly 400 in attendance.
HELPING HANDS
When I think about our journey this year and the Helping Hand that we were able to give so many children in our community,
I am humbled and amazed. Our committee‖s journey began in July looking at non-profits in our community and how we
could partner with them to assist and enhance their programs benefitting children and families. This year, I have learned much
about the needs of our community and about other non-profits who are working to meet those needs.
The Helping Hands Committee is honored to have partnered with the Rainbow Room, the Corpus Christi Food Bank, The Garcia
Arts and Education Center, and Corpus Christi Metro Ministries. To say the work that these organizations do for the children
in our community is vital would be an understatement. Day after day, they work to improve the lives of children in our community.
It was our honor to give them a hand and partner with them this year. Allow me to reflect on the journey we took
this year.
The Helping Hands Committee began our journey by hosting a shower for Rainbow Room. At our August General Meeting
and the following week, New Members, Active Members, and Sustainers graciously donated boxes upon boxes of diapers,
diaper wipes, diaper crèmes, baby bottles, bedding, baby clothes, backpacks, toys, school supplies, and $130 in gift cards.
Rainbow Room works with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Child Protective Services. Often children
are removed from their home with only the clothes on their back. Rainbow Room supplies some of their basic clothing and
school needs. Donations to the Rainbow Room make a positive impact on the lives of these children and give them a helping
hand when they need it most.
The next stop on our journey to give a Helping Hand in our Community found us at the Corpus Christi Food Bank. I am still
overwhelmed at the amount of food the JLCC ladies sorted, organized, and boxed that day! We amazed the Food Bank! The
first shift unloaded and sorted pallets and pallets of food and drinks. The second shift of JLCC volunteers boxed 4,782 pounds
of food!
In Corpus Christi 19,000 people on any given week rely on the food from the Food Bank. Of all the people served, 38% of
them (7,200) are children under the age of 18. Thank you JLCC Members for partnering with the CC Food Bank during Hunger
Awareness Month (September) and giving a hand to children and families in our community.
Our journey continued and took us through 31 different countries at Christmas Around the World.
H-E-B, the Art Museum of South Texas, and The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. partnered again to bring this holiday tradition
to our community. Thousands in our community traveled through Christmas Around the World at the Christmas Tree
Forest this November and December at the Art Museum of South Texas.
The Christmas Tree Forest featured 30 trees beautifully decorated by local schools (preschool-High School) with each tree representing
the holiday symbols and celebrations of a specific country. Children decorating the trees were able to learn about
their respective country and its traditions. The Christmas Tree Forest also featured a special tree representing the U.S.A and
the three partners (H-E-B, the Art Museum, and The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc.) Special thanks to the Boy Scouts for
decorating (and taking down) this beautiful tree.
A highlight on this leg of our journey was the Free Family Fun Day on Saturday, December 10, 2011. 1,675 people were in attendance
at the Free Family Fun Day. Upon entering, the children were able to see Santa and two of his elves. After a visit
with Santa, a picture, and a candy cane, visitors proceeded to the trees. Their eyes beheld 31 spectacularly decorated Christmas
trees and vibrant red poinsettias while their ears heard the beautiful sounds of the Christmas season. At each tree, visitors
were greeted by a friendly Junior League volunteer who shared facts about how the respective country celebrates Christmas.
The first 750 children to enter received H-E-Buddy bags that were stuffed with various items including a new book! We
are thankful to the businesses that generously supported this special day by donating items for the exhibit and/or goodies for
the H-E-Buddy Bags!
H-E-B, in partnership with the Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. and the Art Museum of South Texas, donated the 30 trees
to local families in need. Trees were given to families through the Garcia Arts Center. In addition to the 7 foot, pre-lit, artificial
Christmas tree the selected family received a picture of the tree, the fact card about Christmas in that country, and the ornaments
for that tree. The look of excitement on the face of one of the boys whose family received a tree made this stop on
our journey complete!
HELPING HANDS
Not ready to end this year‖s journey, we partnered with the Garcia Arts and Education Center. Books and Art Supplies were
collected for the afterschool activities, lending library, summer programs, and summer art camps at the Garcia Arts and Education
Center. We collected 504 books for preschoolers to young adults. Our ladies also gave 13 packs of modeling clay, 10
scissors, 109 containers of glue, 18 new paints, LOTS of Markers, crayons, and colored pencils, plus paper, canvas, pipe
cleaners, clay tools, other various art supplies, and $160 in gift cards to purchase additional supplies. St. John―s United Methodist
Church heard about The Junior League‖s Collection Drive and donated a kiln (which the Church no longer uses) to the Garcia
Arts and Education Center. The Garcia Center is excited to have this kiln for their summer art programs.
On Saturday, April 14, we journeyed to Rainbow House at Metro Ministries. Last year Rainbow House served 463 women and
children. 78 of those moved into homes in the community and are now self-sufficient thanks to the help and support from
Rainbow House. On the day of our project, many helping hands transformed the inside of Rainbow House, the outdoor playground,
and the warehouse used by Rainbow House. Outdoors we added a safe fall zone, a raised flower bed, and a row of
jasmine along a fence line. For six hours, volunteers labored outside shoveling, raking, laying timber, laying blocks for the
raised flower bed, drilling, and planting. Trip after trip of wheelbarrows filled with engineered wood fiber or soil were made.
In the end, the results were amazing! Their playground is now safe and attractive. A shade structure is also being provided
by JLCC and will be installed later this Spring.
The indoor playroom was given a new foam floor mat, new shelves, wall decorations, and new bean bags. It is bright,
cheerful, and kid friendly. The library was also cleaned and organized so that moms and children will be able to quickly find
books in good repair. Each of the 16 family rooms received beautiful new privacy curtains (used as doors).
When a mom and her children are able to move from Rainbow House into a place of their own, Metro Ministries has furniture
and household items (that have been donated) that the women can select for their home. Before the ladies of The Junior
League arrived, this warehouse was unorganized, had some items that needed to be discarded or donated to Salvation Army,
and was difficult to walk through. After the ladies were finished cleaning, moving furniture, and organizing, the warehouse
looked like a display room at a store! Now it is ready for women to go “shopping” as they prepare their new home.
This part of our journey would not have been complete without some generous business partners. Thank you to those who
journeyed and labored with us!
Our journey was nearing the end but first we had a special celebration to attend. At the April General Meeting of The Junior
League of Corpus Christi, Inc., ladies were adorned with flowers and smiles ready to be part of a “virtual” surprise party for
Brooke Hester‖s 5 th birthday! Active Member, Jessica Hester and her daughter Brooke have been in New York City for over a
year so Brooke can have the best possible treatment for Nueroblastoma. Even at her young age, Brooke is already improving
her community and giving a helping hand to children through her Brooke‖s Blossoms N Buddies which gives boutonnieres or
headbands and hats decorated with blossoms and bling to children battling Cancer and brings awareness to childhood Cancer.
Jessica said that Brooke wanted people to jump out and wish her a Happy Birthday. Not knowing where they would be on
her birthday, Jessica came up with the idea of a “virtual” surprise party. As Jessica‖s League sisters we knew this was a
party we wouldn‖t miss! Members filled the room with beautiful flowers and birthday wishes for a precious little girl. Videos
and photos of Members wishing Brooke a “Happy Birthday” were uploaded to Brooke‖s Blossoming Birthday Wish Facebook
Page. What a wonderful “virtual” surprise party in celebration of Brooke Hester‖s 5 th birthday!
I am thankful for our journey this year and for everyone who joined us along the way. Thank you to all of the non-profit organizations,
businesses, and individuals who were part of this journey. Thank you also to the New Members who joined us
this Spring and worked with us. Last but certainly not least, I am incredibly thankful to have been part of a committee of wonderful,
intelligent, hard-working, and talented ladies!
NEW MEMBERS
It has been a pleasure to work with the New Member Class of 2011-2012. This amazing group of
ladies joined the League in hopes of becoming contributing members of our community while making
lifelong friends.
The first part of the New Member semester consisted of the ladies becoming familiar with the infrastructure
of the League. Meetings were held at various non profits around town that are League
community partners.
During the second half of the semester, the ladies were put on actual working committees. This was
done in part to give them an opportunity to get a taste of how projects and fundraisers run and to
get to know our current Active members. All in all it was a successful year.
ACTION LEARNING TEAM
ALT (Action Learning Team) has been a journey that has only just begun.
Who: 103 women from 79 Leagues participating in 13 ALTs:
• 5 Community ALTs
• 5 Membership ALTs
• 3 Governance and Management ALTs
All 3 Governance and Management ALTs have arrived at the same “innovation” or proposed governance
and management structure – all recommending complete separation of governance and management bodies.
Why?
Because Junior Leagues need to focus on governing the League instead of focusing on managing the
League. On traditional Junior League Boards with both Governance and Management responsibilities, Governance
often takes the back seat to more immediate management priorities.
Roles and responsibilities?
The Board of Directors is the governing body of the JLCC. The Board ensures the future success of the
League through mission-oriented, strategic, long-term focus, brand recognition and fiduciary oversight. The
Management Committee executes the JLCC‖s programs and activities, with an operational focus on day-today
and current year, aligned with the strategic plan and direction set by the Board.
Our league is fortunate to have the members of the work team devote their time, knowledge and insight to
moving our league forward! I am honored to be part of such an amazing group of ladies!
We are moving into the testing phase of ALT and I am proud to be working with the following ladies to
make this happen:
Governing Board of Directors-Katherine Dain (President), Lillian Riojas (President-elect), Veronica Maxwell
(Treasurer), Vanessa Ramirez (Recording Secretary/Bylaws), Wendy Batek (Nominating), Alissa Worley
(Funding Development), Jacqueline Replogle (Public Relations), Roe Rock (Planning &Research), Claudette
trained volunteers.
Here are some highlights from the nominations:
She is a proven leader and has been so giving of her time and talents to help
move the JLCC into the right direction.
She has been so good at sharing her knowledge and training with the rest of
us.
League and to the community.
Here are some highlights from the nominations:
Without her help, the Rummage committee wouldn‖t have been so successful.
She was always there to offer advice and lend a helping hand.
She loves the JLCC and it shows.
Love Award...ALISSA WORLEY
The Love Award is a discretionary award and is not necessarily given every
RUN AMUCK
The first annual Run Amuck 5KMud Run for the Junior League of Corpus Christi started their event with a Celebrity Run on Friday,
October 21. Local and National celebrities such as Bruce Bowen, Barbie Leo, Chad Peters and Kim Pool, came out to the
track to support our event. Later that night a Pre-Party and Raffle Event took place at Gulf Coast Racing. Junior League members
and community members came out to enjoy P.F. Chang appetizers, cake by Janet‖s Cakery and music by D.J. Curtis Rock.
Community members were thrilled with the idea of a Mud Run in our area and showed their support with sponsorships. L &
F Distributors, Gulf Coast Racing, Kocurek Land and Improvements, H-E-B, 92.7 K-Bay, Peggy and Avinash Ahuja, Ed and Gloria
Hicks, and many other sponsors contributed to our event. Thanks to all of our sponsors, volunteers and community members
whose hard work made an event like this possible!
The day of the race was filled with volunteers and eager racers. Over 15 waves of runners were timed as they completed a
5 kilometer mud run with multiple obstacles. Several runners wore wacky costumes to the run! The runners attacked obstacles
that included a climbing wall, culverts, balance beams, over and under poles, and tire obstacles. The run was completed
with a challenging crawl through a mud pit!
Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Run Amuck 5K can go the Junior League website: jlcc.org and click on
our link. Pictures are also available for viewing and purchase through skudzoom.com.
The Run Amuck Committee ladies spent four months planning for this event. BeBe Bellfield, Rosalynn Davidson, Loren Rock,
Amanda Kocurek, Crystal Moseley, Brooke Thorpe, and Traci Powell literally “hit the ground running” in order to create a well
-planned and exciting event to set the standard for a Junior League Mud Run.
FAIRY TALE BALL
On January 28, 2012, the Junior League of Corpus Christi held its 7th Annual Fairy Tale Ball fundraiser. The honorees for the
event were the Past Presidents of the JLCC. Thanks to the generous support of Razzle Dazzle and the creative minds of the
guests, the Ortiz Center was turned into a star-filled wonderland with tables inspired by fairy tales.
The evening began at 7pm with guests walking down a star-lined path. When they entered the venue, guests had the option
to pose for a “Prom Picture”, step into the photo booth or take their chance at the color wheel to win a bottle of wine!
Upon entering the ballroom, the attendees were given the royal treatment. A bid board and silent auction waited with wonderful
items from across the Coastal Bend area. With both D.J. Boy R D and the Sophisticates entertaining the crowd, the dance
floor quickly became the hotspot of the evening. Other entertainment included a Cigar Roller on the patio with a chance to
win dinner at Bleu Bistro, a Whiskey and Watches raffle for the men and a Bubbles and Beads raffle for the princesses at the
event.
A short tribute film honoring the Past Presidents and explaining the benefits of the JLCC was played for the crowd. After the
tribute, it was time to mix and mingle!
The Ball was an amazing success—raising over $49,000 that will be spent on programs and outreach by various JLCC committees.
The event would not have been successful without the tireless help of an amazing committee and the support of so many
wonderful local businesses. We‖d like to thank our event underwriter Catherine and Sam Susser for helping make this magical
evening come true!
Our King and Queen sponsors gave much more then monetary donations, thank you for your time and energy Razzle Dazzle,
Al Fon Home Video Studio, L&F Distribution and Nside Magazine. The event couldn‖t have happened without your generosity.
We‖d also like to thank our Prince and Princess sponsors for the evening: Becky and Marty Davis, Bleu Bistro, Dr. Mark
Dodson, ESPEJO Energy, Havana Night Club, HEB and Ovations Catering.
Thank you also to our event donors: AVT Event Technology, Bellezza Photography, Camille‖s Original Jewelry Design, Czech
LITTLE LEAGUERS
Little Leaguers events are play dates scheduled during the League year for all members and their favorite little ones, whether it
be their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or godchildren. It is an opportunity for members to socialize and introduce
their families to each other outside our normal community events and fundraisers. The play dates were formed two years
ago when members Alissa Worley and Wendy Batek, who were pregnant at the same time, realized that almost half a year
had gone by before their little ones ever met. From there, they scheduled time to meet at various locations around town to let
their little ones play together and invited other members to come as well. This year, the H.U.G.S. (Helping Us Give Support)
Committee took over scheduling these events, because one of the purposes of the committee is to provide opportunities for
members to socialize and bond together. The play dates this year took place at a variety of play sites and community events,
including bouncing around at Jumping Monkeys, picking pumpkins at the Asbury Pumpkin Patch, exploring our very own
Christmas Around the World exhibit and the 65 th Anniversary of Golden Books exhibit at the Art Museum of South Texas and
ending with a “Summer Celebration” party at Brinca. The H.U.G.S Committee will continue to schedule events next year, so
keep your eye open for future news in Newsday Tuesday. If you have any suggestions on child-friendly activities or locations
in town, please email hugscommittee@hotmail.com. We hope to see you next time!
Council corners
FUNDING COUNCIL
Well, it‖s hard to believe that another league year has come to a close. This year, as Funding VP, I had the honor of leading one
of the best groups of women I‖ve ever worked with during my tenure in the JLCC! We added a new fundraiser, Run Amuck, and
although these women had only 4 months to plan and execute an event, you would have thought they had been working for 12
months! The leadership and organization from both Bebe Bellfield and Rosalynn Davidson is one of the reasons I am so proud to
be a member of such a great organization. With a modest goal for a first year event, they went on to raise approximately
$30,000 and had nearly 500 participants, certainly setting the bar for future Mud Runs. Wrapping up the fall and managing to get
through the holidays juggling both family and league obligations, the Fairy Tale Ball committee, under the leadership of Betsy Herring
and Helen Terrance, planned the 7 th annual event which brought about beautifully decorated tables and a sellout crowd of
royalty. With never to be worn again gowns, we quickly turned focus into spring cleaning and preparing for the Rummage Sale.
Emily Martinez
Funding VP
WOW! Is all I can say about an amazing event. Under first time JLCC Chairs Lea Brown and Stacey Manning, the rummage
committee more than doubled their goal, raising $42,000. Their tireless efforts did not go unnoticed as they worked hard to
secure a location for the event, obtain advertising on a billboard in a great location, and planning a pre-party with food, beverages,
and music all while juggling their committee members and a group of new members on loan from our fabulous New
Member Committee. At the heart of all this fundraising, crunching numbers and researching databases behind the scenes were Jenny Alexander and
Veronica Maxwell Treasurer and Treasurer-elect as well as Veronica Adams, Fund Development. Fund Development has risen it‖s head again and
members of our league felt that re-implementing this committee would help us better prepare and manage our sponsorship opportunities. This committee
lead by Veronica Adams spent countless hours researching the best database to manage our sponsorships as well as researching potential
grants we could apply for. The committees are left to manage their events, plan, prepare and execute but not without someone managing the funds
and ensuring financial support is available the day/night of the event! None of this could be done without the tireless efforts and expertise of both
Jenny and Veronica. Not to be forgotten our Bayfest Chair, Yvette Lara, continued to attend Bayfest Board meetings as Bayfest, Inc. continues to work
through financial issues and re-designing what was once a very successful community event. Throughout the year we tackled fundraisers, databases,
financial documents, and being a part of the planning for a new community event. It‖s amazing at the amount of effort, countless hours, planning, and
preparation that goes into what we do each year to raise the necessary funds needed to ensure our community events can be executed. Since 1937,
the JLCC has made a tremendous impact on our great community from first providing graham crackers and milk during the depression to creating
places like Skate Park and Kids Place, to the Women‖s Shelter and the Children‖s Advocacy Center. You can‖t throw a stone in this city and not hit
something that has not been impacted by the women of the Junior League of Corpus Christi. The feeling of this powerful impact is what keeps me
coming back year after year. THANK YOU to our community partners, sponsors, husbands, partners and families for providing the support we need
to make the impact we do, we could not do any of this without YOU!
COMMUNITY COUNCIL
“What are you doing for others?”-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Veronica hudlow
community VP
This is a poignant and sincere question and the answer is as much as possible.
In the course of this year, Community Council helped to educate children and their parents on the importance of eating healthy
and staying active. We also donated supplies, organized, repaired and landscaped at multiple non-profit locations around the City.
Kid‖s Café at La Armada was hosted by Kids in the Kitchen and they taught the children how eating healthy can be tasty. Wild for
Wellness Fitness Fiesta promoted physical activity by showcasing many activities, from basketball to dancing.
Helping Hands organized drives to collect much needed supplies for the Rainbow Room and Garcia Art and Education Center.
The supplies collected included diapers, clothing, and hygienic products for the Rainbow Room and arts supplies and books for
the Garcia Art and Education Center. They also organized the pantry at the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. Helping Hands had a
hand in improving the Metro Ministries Rainbow House by helping to make their playground and playroom safe, landscaping the
playground, and purchasing a shade structure.
While we are proud of our work with the community we also like having fun with our work.
Thousands in our community were able to Celebrate the Journey as they traveled through Christmas Around the World at the Christmas Tree Forest
at the Art Museum of South Texas. The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. partnered with H-E-B and the Art Museum of South Texas to again
bring this holiday tradition to our community. Through the theme of “Christmas Around the World”, children and adults learned how others celebrate
Christmas.
The Wild for Wellness Fitness Fiesta showcased a day long performance by Rock Star Nutritionist Jill Jayne who performed her Nutrition Rock Invasion
Show. Jill‖s performance was an interactive show with the children on nutrition. Singing and dancing about fruits and vegetables in a fun way that
helped children to learn about nutrition and exercise
MEMBERSHIP COUNCIL
HUGS—Alyssa and her girls created an inviting environment for every general meeting and training. The prayer chain, birth, wedding
and birthday announcements were included every week. A nice edition this year were the socials. In the Fall, Hugs rented
the theatre for our organization to watch THE HELP! In the Spring, we had a sip and shop social. Both events were very well
attended. Little Leaguers is the special touch for all the Mom‖s who would like some mom and child time with other members.
Thank you for giving us the extra socials.
Lisa jasek
membership VP
PLACEMENT—Erika and her placement committees goal was to ensure that members are completing their obligations as well as
tracking progress and commitment to their designated committee. Spring Interviews also provide a profile for each member.
The interview and any other documents will be given to Nominating for the following fiscal year. This paper work/
report card will help develop and enrich a members league career. Placement hosted a mini fair for the New Member class and
a regular fair at the April General Meeting. Thanks for setting up two opportunities.
NEW MEMBER—Last Summer, Katia and her crew hosted the Summer Retreat at the Art Museum. The young ladies were able to
learn about all the major components that make the league a GREAT organization as well and an opportunity to learn what the
year commitment would include. The theme was JLCC In The City! During the Fall, the new members met with their assigned advisor and class. In
the Spring, these young ladies were evenly placed on a Community group. This placement was for learning and helping make the transition as they
will become Active members. In March, the new member class was privileged to vote on the 2012-2013 projects! Very Exciting! As April arrived,
two placement fairs were available for the class to start thinking about what they would like to do as first year actives. In May 45 ladies completed
their course and graduated as Active Members. Congratulations and thank you for your commitment!
NOMINATING—WOW! Jennifer and her committee were empowered to select our President Elect, Our Governing Board and The nominating committee
for the next fiscal year. These ladies spent many evenings to ensure that our leaders were placed in the appropriate positions. Since we have so
many talented women, this job can be very difficult. A Special Thank you for all your hard work and making it all happen!
PLANNING & RESEARCH—Jacqueline and her P&R team carried out the strategic planning based on the mission and the needs of membership. Open
forums were conducted so members could voice their opinion. Ideas were collected, research was on going and in the Mid Spring, the members
voted on projects and fundraisers for the year to come. Thanks for thinking out of the box and making sure everyone' s voice was heard.
ACTION LEARNING TEAM—Brooke and her team spent many hours dissecting our leagues issues, goals and future ideas. This year we took on phase
I and have implemented the Governing Board, The Management Team and a small Nominating team concept. These ladies have been revamping the
SOPs and starting on competencies. Competencies will help each member track their work record, where they are today and what they need to do to
progress to their personal league career goal. Brooke is a perfect person for this role and will continue to serve next year. Thanks for always clarifying
what we are doing and where we are going.
Letter from the president-elect
When I was little, my mother was always dragging us to really boring places, auction sales,
her friends‖ with all boys (I have 3 sisters), and volunteer work. We would try to get out of it
but she completely ignored us. We would mumble about how unfair it was, but very quietly;
my mother was a little scary when she was mad. Imagine my surprise
when I grew up and continued the volunteer work that I once
hated but grew to love. I entered the Junior League in 2001 and
every year I say, ―that was my best placement ever‖. The Women‖s
Shelter, Rummage, Bayfest, Treasurer, Graffiti Wipeout (You know I
had to mention it at least once.) Each year, a group of women
helped guide me on a journey to develop my potential, in the
League, and in life. Each placement also brought me face to face
with the needs of this community and how we have changed lives.
As I step into my presidential year, I wonder if I‖m up to the task. I
am following almost 70 years of amazing Corpus Christi women
and they have made a big difference in this community. Can I do it? Why did they pick me?
What were they thinking? Then I stop and think for a minute. The League put me here. I
could not have done this when I started but the League says I can do it. After 11 years, I‖m in
this position because I am bold. I‖m not afraid to take charge or ask what needs to be done.
I will say I was wrong and brag about something I did right. I am outspoken, and once in a
while, quietly reflective. I love to give credit to other people, especially when they don‖t do it
for themselves. I have learned so much over the last 11 years but the biggest lesson of all is
―I‖ can‖t do it alone. No matter how hard ―I‖ work, I couldn‖t have done any of it alone. We
all contribute a tremendous amount of time improving this community. With 3 fundraisers, 3
community projects and a whole support system for membership, it is a job for many, not
one. The many also includes our families and the business community. So while I may be
the president of the Junior League for 2012-2013, it really isn‖t about what I can do. It is going
to be that bold journey we all take together, developing our potential while improving this
community though volunteerism. I look forward to seeing each of you develop your potential,
and I hope to have a part in helping you along, as many have done for me.
