Spring Shopping Social
The first annual JLCC Spring Shopping Social was a huge success! On April 19,
2012, members and their guests spent an evening of fun at a handful of boutiques
owned by fellow JLCC members. Coincidently, the event fell during National Volunteer
Week, so this was a great opportunity for members to be recognized for their
hard work with JLCC. This included a three hour “Happy Hour” at five different locations,
where ladies were treated to drinks and eats, while they mingled and shopped
with a special 20% discount. The stores were kind enough to honor the discount
throughout the day and they each donated items for a fabulous gift basket. Members
that visited at least three locations were eligible for the drawing held at the
April 26 th General Meeting. As a bonus for the evening, a party bus was arranged for
members that wanted to make the rounds while bonding with other members…and
oh, how they had fun! This event was so successful, that it is expected to occur
again next year, so be sure to make plans to attend next Spring! We would like to
thank the following for helping make this event a success - Fashionista by Erika
Serna, Veronica Hudlow - BeautiControl Consultant, Sashay Boutique, Jewels Clothing
& Accessories, Mosaic with guest Nancy Weaver - Fibi & Clo Style Leader, our
local Talbots and CC Party Bus. You are greatly appreciated!
Very often the wise words of others resonate so
loudly they bear repeating. And always when I hear
the powerful words of Aristotle, “The greatest virtues
are those which are most useful to other persons”, I
am reminded of each member of the Junior League.
It is clear to me that the virtues of our membership undoubtedly make
Corpus Christi a better place to learn, live and work. The positive impact
on our community is a true testament to the caliber of women who
choose to become involved in this organization.
Throughout this spring issue of Currents you will witness the accomplishments
of many. Individually each member has accomplished
many goals; collectively our league has changed lives.
I recently received a letter from a board member at Metro Ministries
thanking all members not only for the hard work at the Rainbow House
Shelter but for the long history of dedication to improving this community.
While sorting children’s books our group of volunteers was
thanked personally by a resident of Rainbow House. What I know from
my years as a community volunteer is that the gratitude wasn’t for the
new books or the new curtains and not even for the beautiful play area
we created instead it was the sincerest gratitude in knowing someone
cared.
That such a small act on our part could mean so much to some of the
most vulnerable in our community is a testament to the key role the
League has played in moving this community forward. Consider the
number of lives our members have made a difference in this year.
Whether their focus was health or education, whether they worked on a
fundraiser, a publication, facilitated a member training or any other
selfless ways our volunteers serve. They have all worked towards fulfilling
the mission of the JLCC.
As our history illustrates, we are a strong league. The idea of trained
volunteers has flourished in our community and each year the league
works to seek new ways to use the talents of its membership. Each
year new members are recruited to guarantee a foundation of strength
and to continue our work in making a collective difference in the lives
of the community we serve.
Recent years have demonstrated how uncertain life can get but they
have also shown us what we’re capable of when we all join together
and decide to be the difference.
May we always inspire each other to continue to give back and may the
many faces of the community we support encourage us to always do
more.
In gratitude,
Kids in the Kitchen is WILD about Wellness!
Kid’s in the Kitchen held The Wild for Wellness Fitness Fiesta on March 31, 2012 at the
Texas A & M Corpus Christi Dugan Wellness Center. The Fitness Fiesta was a free
citywide community event focusing on choosing a Healthier Lifestyle for the whole family.
The event included thirty-four vendors and twelve performances. The performances included
a wide variety of healthy activities to promote exercise and well being. Some of
the performances were Zumba, ballet, School drill teams, Texas A & M Islander’s Basketball
team, tennis, and cycling. There were fun hands on activities for the whole family
that focused on nutrition, as well as, free diabetes and BMI testing.
Our Showcase performance was by Rock Star Nutritionist
Jill Jayne who performed her Nutrition Rock Invasion
Show. Jill’s performance was an interactive show with
the children on nutrition. Singing and dancing about
fruits and vegetables is a fun way for children to learn
about nutrition and exercise.
The event had five local restaurants that all had healthy
choices to sample from their menus. H-E-B and the
Farmer’s Market were present doing fabulous food
demonstrations.
Our sponsor’s were United Healthcare, H-E-B, ESPN,
Kbay, Z95, and Corpus Christi Regional Transportation
Authority (RTA).
Congratulations to the entire Kid’s in the Kitchen committee
for all of their hard work and dedication to making
the event a Huge Success.
Helping Hands in ACTION!
—Our journey to give a Helping Hand to our community continues. In February the Helping
Hands committee coordinated a collection drive to benefit the Garcia Arts and Education Center. Books and Art Supplies
were collected for the afterschool activities, lending library, summer programs, and summer art camp. Half Price Books
joined the Junior League of Corpus Christi in providing books to the Garcia Arts and Education Center. Together we collected
504 books for preschoolers to young adults. 504 more books for their library! The children and families are able to use this
as a lending library and are also able to keep a beloved book, if requested. The ladies of the Junior League of Corpus Christi,
Inc also gave 13 packs of modeling clay, 10 scissors, 109 containers of glue, 18 new paints, LOTS of Markers, crayons, and
colored pencils, plus paper, brayers, canvas, pipe cleaners, clay tools, and other various art supplies. The Garcia Center also
received $160 in gift cards for additional supplies. The Helping Hands Committee is thrilled to announce that St. John ‘s
United Methodist Church heard about this Collection Drive and has donated a kiln (which the Church no longer uses) to the
Garcia Arts and Education Center. The Garcia Center is excited to have this kiln for their summer art programs. Thank you to
Half Price Books, St. John’s United Methodist Church, and the ladies of the Junior League of Corpus Christi for giving a helping
hand to the children and families of the Garcia Arts and Education Center. We are proud to partner with the Garcia Arts
and Education Center and journey together to improve our community.
—On Saturday, April 14 Rainbow House at Metro Ministries was filled with volunteers ready to give a helping
hand. Together many helping hands transformed the inside of Rainbow House, the outdoor playground, and the warehouse
used by Rainbow House. Outdoors we added a safe fall zone (timber border filled with engineered wood fiber), a raised flower
bed, and a row of jasmine along a fence line. For six hours, volunteers labored outside shoveling, raking, laying timber,
laying blocks for the raised flower bed, drilling, and planting. Trip after trip of wheelbarrows filled with engineered wood fiber
and soil were made. In the end, the results were amazing! Their playground is now safe and attractive. The families will also
have the benefit of flowers and plants. Unfortunately the shade structure was not able to be installed on this workday but it
will be installed later this Spring.
The indoor playroom was given a new foam floor mat, new shelves, wall decorations, and new bean bags. It is bright, cheerful,
and kid friendly. The library was also cleaned and organized so that moms and children will be able to quickly find books
in good repair. Each of the 16 family rooms received beautiful new privacy curtains (used as doors).
When a mom and her children are able to move from Rainbow House into a place of their own, Metro Ministries has furniture
and household items (that have been donated) that the women can select for their home. Before the ladies of The Junior
League arrived, this warehouse was unorganized, had some items that needed to be discarded or donated to Salvation Army,
and was difficult to walk through. After the ladies were finished cleaning, moving furniture, and organizing, the warehouse
looked like a display room at a store! Now it is ready for women to go “shopping” as they prepare their new home.
The Helping Hands Committee would like to thank our AMAZING sponsors: Turner and Ramirez Architects and Planners, KJM
Construction, Gill’s Nursery, Haas Materials, Rock Engineering and Testing Lab, Inc., and Domino’s Pizza. A special thank you
to Philip Ramirez and Paul Duke (Turner and Ramirez Architects and Planners) for their design and plans of the outdoor playground,
hours of preparation, and their hard physical work on site all day during installation. Also special thanks to Patrick
Villarreal and family (KJM Construction) for showing up with tools and equipment and working tirelessly all day.
Last year Rainbow House served 463 women and children. 78 of those moved into homes in the community and are now
self sufficient thanks to the help and support from Rainbow House.
I am proud to be a small part of this journey with Rainbow House. The Helping Hands Committee (Jill, Jennifer, Meredith,
Cherie, Stacy, Morgan, Courtney, Jessica, and Mary) extends our deepest gratitude to all of the volunteers and businesses
who gave so much and worked so hard to give a Helping Hand to the women and children at Rainbow House Metro Ministries.
Helping Hands (con’t)
—At the April General Meeting of the Junior
League of Corpus Christi, Inc everything was coming up roses….and daisies,
tulips, and daffodils! Adorned with flowers and smiles, ladies were part of a
“virtual” surprise party for Brooke Hester’s 5 th birthday! Active Member, Jessica
Hester and her daughter Brooke have been in New York City for over a
year so Brooke can have the best possible treatment for Nueroblastoma.
Beau Hester, husband and father, travels up there when he can. Jessica
said that Brooke wanted people to jump out and wish her a Happy Birthday.
Not knowing where they would be on her birthday, Jessica came up with the
idea of a “virtual” surprise party. Jessica’s sisters in the League knew this
was a party they couldn’t miss. Members filled the
room with beautiful flowers and birthday wishes for a
precious little girl. Videos and photos of Members
wishing Brooke a “Happy Birthday” were uploaded to
Brooke’s Blossoming Birthday Wish Facebook Page.
Ladies also enjoyed the Country Club’s delicious
chocolate cake decorated especially for Brooke’s
birthday. What a wonderful “virtual” surprise party
in celebration of Brooke Hester’s 5 th birthday! Thank
you Tubbs of Flowers and Arrow Display and Signs
for being part of the party. Happy Birthday, Brooke!
Fairy Tale Ball….a night to remember!
On January 28, 2012, the Junior League of Corpus Christi held its 7th annual Fairy Tale Ball fundraiser. The honorees for the
event were the Past Presidents of the JLCC. Thanks to the generous support of Razzle Dazzle and the creative minds of the
guests, the Ortiz Center was turned into a star-filled wonderland with tables inspired by fairy tales.
The evening began at 7:00 with guests walking down a starlined path. When they entered the venue, guests had the option to
pose for a “Prom Picture”, step into the photo booth or take their chance at the color wheel to win a bottle of wine!
Upon entering the ballroom, the attendees were treated with the royal treatment. A bid board and silent auction waited with
wonderful items from across the Costal Bend area. With both D.J. Boy R D and the Sophisticates entertaining the crowd, the
dance floor quickly became the hotspot of the evening. Other entertainment included a Cigar Roller on the patio with a chance
to win dinner at Bleu Bistro, a Whiskey and Watches raffle for the men and a Bubbles and Beads raffle for the princesses at
the event.
A short tribute film honoring the Past Presidents and explaining the benefits of the JLCC was played for the crowd. After the
tribute, it was time to mix and mingle!
The 7 th annual Fairy Tale Ball was an amazing success. The ball raised over $49,000 that will be spent in the following year on
programs and outreach by various JLCC committees.
The event would not have been successful without the tireless help of an amazing committee and the support of so many wonderful
local businesses. We’d like to thank our event underwriter Catherine and Sam Susser for helping make this magical
evening come true!
Our King and Queen sponsors gave much more then monetary donations, thank you for your time and energy Razzle Dazzle, Al
Fon Home Video Studio, L&F Distribution and Nside Magazine. The event couldn’t have happened without your generosity.
We’d also like to thank our Prince and Princess sponsors for the evening: Becky and Marty Davis, Bleu Bistro, Dr. Mark Dodson,
ESPEJO Energy, Havana Night Club, H-E-B and Ovations Catering. Thank you also to our event donors: AVT Event Technology,
Bellezza Photography, Camille’s Original Jewelry Design, Czech Mex Bakery and Café, Domino’s Pizza, Habeeb’s Jewelers,
Image Cinema, Martin Ulisse Imports, Mosaic Lamar Park, Papa Murphy’s Pizza and Picture Playhouse.
—KIK’s commitment to keeping kids healthy continued this spring with the last
two events held at La Armada Kid’s Café. KIK started these children’s year continuing to remind
them that healthy eating can be tasty and healthy.
KIK hosted the 3 rd Annual Fitness Fiesta on March 31, 2012 with Wild for Wellness. This was a
large city wide health and fitness festival which included a free performance of the Jump with Jill
show, cooking demonstrations, health screens, and various restaurants featuring their healthiest
fare. Wild for Wellness also had a variety of physical activities, including mini fitness classes,
dancing classes, and much more. This event was held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. What
On April 14, Helping Hands once again opened up their hearts and busted out their hammers to help spruce up
Metro Ministries Rainbow House. Their playground is now safe and attractive. The families will also have the benefit
of flowers and plants. The indoor playroom was given a new foam floor mat, new shelves, wall decorations, and
new bean bags. It is bright, cheerful, and kid friendly. Their warehouse was also re-organized so that it is easier
now for a transitioning mom and children to be able to collect much needed furniture and household items. A
shade structure is scheduled to be installed later this spring.
Helping Hands also helped put together a virtual “surprise” birthday party for Brooke Hester, daughter of fellow
JLCC member Jessica Hester. Brooke is battling Nueroblastoma. Jessica and Brooke are currently in New York City
where she is receiving treatment. This party included singing of happy birthday, flowers, and of course no party
Council Corner (continued)
:
As the fiscal year comes to an end, I would like to express my gratitude in all your efforts, hard
work and dedication to making this Spring so successful.
—Thanks for adding spunk and socials to our league. The little league events added some
time for moms to interact with other league moms and have children play with each other as well
as the socials added “adult” time for many members who are always on the run and trying to juggle…family,
work and commitments.
Lisa Jasek
—Bravo! You managed to keep our members up to speed with preference sheets, interviews,
obligations and shifts! Thanks for making sure all our members followed the Bylaws and completed their
membership obligations. Looking forward to seeing membership placement for next year.
—WOW! What a great year of research and work from your committee. Thank you for all the
time you took in researching fundraisers and community needs. Bringing back Cinderella’s Closet is so exciting
and many young ladies will be grateful in the year to come. The Rummage Ladies are thrilled that they have another
year of rummage too! Let’s not forget to save our goods for donation.
—As the new member class graduates, we can know that many GEMS have been added this year. We
not only have a large amount of young women becoming active members but many hard working vibrant energetic
women ready to give back to the community. Chairman and advisors: A special thank you for making this year a
positive and good experience for our new additions. I have personally enjoyed meeting the new class and being
part of their socials and dinners.
—Hats off to a group of women who were able to complete the selection process for The Governing
Board and Nominating Slate. I have no doubt all these leaders will guide us into a fantastic 2012-2013 year!
—Can you say “change,” “good change,” and “more change to come!” Brooke, Thank you for embracing the
NEW position and committing to multiple years of service on the ALT team. Membership is excited to learn more
about what 2012, 2013 and 2014 will bring to our organization.
As the year comes to an end, I am sad that this chapter has ended for me. However, I am very grateful to have
served with all of you! Thanks for a learning experience too. You are truly the leaders of today, tomorrow and the
future!
The beginning of a new year usually means back to the work and home life routine after months
of holiday preparation, planning, and parties. Well, after ringing in the New Year for 2012, we
slipped back into the fantasy world of the Fairy Tale Ball on January 28 th . This was a spectacular
event filled with an enchanted evening. FTB Co-Chairs, Helen Terrance and Betsy Herring
and their committee did a fabulous job hosting our 7 th annual event. Packing our slippers and
gown away, we began dusting off old treasurers for what would turn out to be a very successful
Rummage Sale! Lea Brown and Stacey Manning , together with their committee, put on such a
successful event that the general membership voted to bring it back next year! These ladies
Emily Martinez worked tirelessly and showed such leadership and they helped train a group of new members
who were newly assigned to the half-year placement. All in all both committees successfully
helped to raise just under $100,000!
