—KIK’s commitment to keeping kids healthy continued this spring with the last
two events held at La Armada Kid’s Café. KIK started these children’s year continuing to remind
them that healthy eating can be tasty and healthy.
KIK hosted the 3 rd Annual Fitness Fiesta on March 31, 2012 with Wild for Wellness. This was a
large city wide health and fitness festival which included a free performance of the Jump with Jill
show, cooking demonstrations, health screens, and various restaurants featuring their healthiest
fare. Wild for Wellness also had a variety of physical activities, including mini fitness classes,
dancing classes, and much more. This event was held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. What
a great event. Way to go Kids in the Kitchen!
—Helping Hands started their year with a collection drive to benefit the Garcia Arts and Education
Center. Books and art supplies were collected for the afterschool activities, lending library, summer programs, and
summer art camp.
On April 14, Helping Hands once again opened up their hearts and busted out their hammers to help spruce up
Metro Ministries Rainbow House. Their playground is now safe and attractive. The families will also have the benefit
of flowers and plants. The indoor playroom was given a new foam floor mat, new shelves, wall decorations, and
new bean bags. It is bright, cheerful, and kid friendly. Their warehouse was also re-organized so that it is easier
now for a transitioning mom and children to be able to collect much needed furniture and household items. A
shade structure is scheduled to be installed later this spring.
Helping Hands also helped put together a virtual “surprise” birthday party for Brooke Hester, daughter of fellow
JLCC member Jessica Hester. Brooke is battling Nueroblastoma. Jessica and Brooke are currently in New York City
where she is receiving treatment. This party included singing of happy birthday, flowers, and of course no party
would be complete without some cake. Happy 5 th Birthday Brooke! Way to go Helping Hands!
