TM 9-2320-211-10-1 (2) The service brake system is an air-hydraulic system made up of the foot brake pedal, pedal linkage, master cylinder, air-hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic lines to all wheels, wheel cylinders, brake drums, and shoes. The master cylinder contains hydraulic fluid. Pressure on the brake pedal is sent to the air-hydraulic cylinder. The air-hydraulic cylinder increases pressure to the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinders expand and press the brakeshoes against the drum to slow or stop the truck. The system components are shown in fig. 2-16. TA 081060 1. Foot brake pedal 2. Master cylinder 3. TM 9-2320-211-10-1 (3) The compressed air system (fig. 2-17 and 2-18) consists of an air compressor, air governor and air reservoirs, and the trailer airbrake components. The compressed air system supplies air to the air–hydraulic cylinder, windshield wiper motors, horn, and air supply valves. Air from the supply valves can be used to inflate the tires.
