4 Future directions 4.1 Actions In proposing actions for the future, initially we are focusing on the issue of connectivity and waterways and specifically the Werribee River. The reasons for choosing the Werribee River as the starting point are: • The regional profile of the Werribee River as a major waterway in the Werribee Plains; • The national significance of biodiversity assets associated with the Werribee River; • The role of Werribee River in providing connectivity between the coast and forested upper catchments; • The capacity to build on and active program of existing projects by a range of organisations; and • The active community involvement in activities to protect and enhance the river’s biodiversity assets. At the same time we want to form a Werribee Plains Regional Environmental Task Group made up of environment officers from the seven municipalities in the Werribee Plains region to look at the connectivity issues and developing actions for all the areas of waterways, grasslands, coast and roads. 4.2 Project Outputs As identified in section 4.1 various organisations and groups are working on independent projects have long term regional biodiversity connectivity outcomes. In the regional analysis these projects are essentially providing a series of core biodiversity areas. The Biodiversity Connectivity Vision (Figure 3) has assisted in identifying gaps between the projects and from these gaps a project proposal has been developed to increase regional connectivity. Section 4.2.1 contains the outline of a project which will compliment other on ground works occurring along the Werribee River. The Werribee River was chosen for this as there are numerous projects already occurring along the length and this project will add significantly to the level of ecosystem connectivity. Other reasons for this project to be chosen are that the land owner has expressed interest in having the work done, there is an existing active community group, the EVCs in the project area are nationally listed and there are numerous listed flora and fauna species recorded as occurring in the area. 4.2.1 Werribee River Woodland Connections Greening Australia along with the land owners, local community groups and additional project partners will develop a bid for the Caring For Our Country Grants which will deliver this project, assisting in building further regional Biodiversity Connectivity along the Werribee River. The aim of the Werribee River Woodland Connections project will be to increase the area of the nationally listed Victorian Volcanic Plains Grassy Woodland and at the same time link three existing patches of that community which occur in proximity to the Werribee River. The patches of Woodland to be joined are Pinkerton Forest, Bush’s Paddock and Eynesbury Woodland. The Werribee River divides Eynesbury from the other two patches. The project will deliver revegetation of approximately 40 hectares of endangered Grassy Woodland and associated escarpment woodland EVCs within the project area. The revegetation will provide both a functional and structural link between the remnant vegetation for the existing populations of woodland birds and other native fauna species. The project will utilise existing community networks and corporate/community partnerships as well as high level research into revegetation and weed management techniques. Additional project targets will include pest plant and animal management and community education. The Werribee River Woodland Connection Project is envisaged to one of many regional biodiversity connectivity projects which will assist in the delivery of an overall landscape scale project. 35
