4 Future directions
4.1 Actions
In proposing actions for the future, initially we are focusing on the issue of connectivity and waterways
and specifically the Werribee River. The reasons for choosing the Werribee River as the starting point
are:
• The regional profile of the Werribee River as a major waterway in the Werribee Plains;
• The national significance of biodiversity assets associated with the Werribee River;
• The role of Werribee River in providing connectivity between the coast and forested upper
catchments;
• The capacity to build on and active program of existing projects by a range of organisations;
and
• The active community involvement in activities to protect and enhance the river’s biodiversity
assets.
At the same time we want to form a Werribee Plains Regional Environmental Task Group made up of
environment officers from the seven municipalities in the Werribee Plains region to look at the
connectivity issues and developing actions for all the areas of waterways, grasslands, coast and
roads.
