<strong>BSE</strong> POLICY ON THE NON-ANONYMISATION OF PATIENT DATA<br />
This policy is relevant to all <strong>BSE</strong> invited speakers/presenters. The policy also applies to all presentations/lectures given<br />
during courses that have applied for, or are in receipt of, <strong>BSE</strong> re-accreditation credits. It will be the responsibility of<br />
course organisers to ensure invited speakers are aware of this policy.<br />
It is a requirement that speakers presenting on behalf of the <strong>BSE</strong> at meetings and speakers on courses/meetings<br />
awarded <strong>BSE</strong> re-accreditation points must ensure that all presentation material is anonymised.<br />
Guidance is provided to NHS staff in the ‘NHS Code of Practice on Confidentiality’ (November 2003).<br />

The duty of confidentiality arises out of the common law of confidentiality, professional obligations and also staff<br />
employment contracts. Breach of confidence may lead to disciplinary measures, bring into question professional<br />
reputation and possibly result in legal proceedings.<br />
Patient information that can identify individual patients is confidential and must not be used or disclosed. In contrast,<br />
anonymised information is not confidential and may be used.<br />
Key identifiable information includes:<br />
Patient’s name, address, full post code, date of birth;<br />
NHS number and local identifiable codes;<br />
Anything else that may be used to identify a patient directly or indirectly. For example, rare diseases, drug treatment<br />
or statistical analyses which have very small numbers within a small population may allow individuals to be identified.<br />
Anonimisation requires the removal of such information from all reports and images.<br />
We appreciate that the removal of patient ID from cases may be difficult depending on the machine being used. We<br />
therefore advise that images for use in presentations are specifically collected for that purpose and the data inputs are<br />
made relevant to your presentation or library collection.<br />
In instances where these stipulations have been breached, the <strong>BSE</strong> will reconsider future use of the presenter, or<br />
withdrawal of <strong>BSE</strong> course re-accreditation credits.
<strong>BSE</strong> <strong>Points</strong> Request<br />
Thank you for your application <strong>request</strong>ing <strong>BSE</strong> <strong>Points</strong> for a course. PLEASE NOTE only Course Organisers should complete this form and<br />
<strong>request</strong>s for <strong>BSE</strong> points by attendees will not be considered. All <strong>request</strong>s must be sent along with a course programme; those received<br />
without an appropriate programme outlining the educational timings/content will be returned directly to the Course Organiser. Please note a<br />
PDF flyer advertisement is not sufficient. Departmental based meetings should not be submitted for <strong>BSE</strong> <strong>Points</strong> and will not be considered for<br />
review.<br />
All <strong>request</strong>s are to be submitted via email accreditation@bsecho.org or by post to <strong>BSE</strong>, DBC, 10-16 Tiller Road, London E14 8PX or by fax to<br />
020 7345 5186 and will be reviewed by the committee on a monthly basis; the cut off point for <strong>request</strong>s is midday on the 15 th of each month.<br />
Any <strong>request</strong>s received after this date will be delayed until the following month. Any inappropriate <strong>request</strong>s will delay the process. The<br />
outcome of your <strong>request</strong> will be sent to you via email.<br />
