“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…”
Hebrews 12:1-2a
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
From The Principal
Over 1,000 people - guests, parents, staff and students
celebrated the formal opening of our new building at the
Hurstville Campus Open Day last week.
The weather was superb and our special guest Mr Daryl
Melham, the Federal Member for Banks congratulated the
school on it’s warmth, hospitality and outstanding use of
resources resulting in the new building.
I took the opportunity to thank the many members of our school
community and those associated with the project who enables
us to arrive at such a stunning building.
In particular I wanted to thank:
• The School Board for their visionary and wise support
• MCA Architects, Mr Steven Malone and Mr Paul Campbell
Allen for Design and Project Management.
• Midson constructions for their skilled construction
• Mr Kevin Godfrey - School Property Manager
• Mrs Wendy Millar and Mr Stephen McKay for project and
finance administration
• Mrs Barbara Wilson and Library staff for their work as we
refurbished and extended Library facilities
• Parents who assisted in so many ways, including financial,
with prayers and ideas.
• Teaching staff who were so co-operative and encouraging
while part of the school was under construction
• Students who managed themselves so well during the
construction process and for their thankful response to the
new facilities they now enjoy.
Issue 3 - 30 Issue March 3 - 2012 3 April 2011
Of course a school is about far more than buildings and what
drew so many positive comments from parents and visitors to
the school on Open Day was the fine work of students and staff
as we proudly and thankfully welcomed people into our school.
A special thank you to the kindergarten children who “stole the
show” with their singing at the start of the day.
“I will give thanks to the Lord because of His righteousness
and I will sing praise to the Lord Most High” Psalm 7:17
As we approach the end of Term, with many students on camp,
a China visit, Year 12 exams and Year 10 work experience,
we also approach the Easter season. This is a time where we
reflect on the amazing grace of God who set us right through
the righteousness of His Son. Jesus
absorbed our failing and shame at
His cost, so we would know
peace with Him.
Excursion
Year 2 will visit Taronga Zoo on Monday 2 April 2012.
Butterflies
Year 1 children study minibeasts and during this time each class
watches butterflies hatch from cocoons. Boys and girls have
enjoyed seeing the butterflies emerge, dry their wings and then
fly away when they are set free.
As part of this unit of study, Year 1 children sell jewelled, enamel
butterfly badges for $2.00 each, which the Deafness Foundation
use (because butterflies don’t have any ears) as a way to raise
money for research, prevention, education, early detection and
technology projects that support the Deaf and hearing impaired
community.
Junior School
The informal interviews between
parents of Year 3 students and
myself have proven to be an
encouraging and thoughtful
way to get to know the children,
their families and their interests.
It appears that Year 3 is enjoying
sport, the Hub with all its new books
and games, kicking balls and the
playground. Teachers have been
impressed with their enthusiasm
for learning and resilience for
managing change.
During Week 9, Year 4 classes
embarked on their first school
camp with their courageous and
enthusiastic teachers. The children’s
excitement reached great heights
with much practicing being put
into the Camp Concert, much
planning being devoted to who is
in what cabin and much thought
being given to how to get the most
sleep (at least the teachers are
concerned about this aspect).
On 2 April, all our parents are
invited to discuss their child’s
learning progress and welfare with
the class teacher, Mrs Cottam or
myself.
The teachers are interested in
forming a healthy relationship with
each family and finding out about
the individuality of each child.
Appointments are to be made
through the main office and we
look forward to this opportunity
to be a supportive Christian
community.
Lastly, thank you to all our visitors,
parents and grandparents on Open
Day. The sparkling weather spread
a special excitement throughout
the school as the students enjoyed
having an audience in their lessons.
Many people commented on
the beautiful artwork, the quality
of the choir’s singing and the
atmosphere of the Hub. Your
presence and interest was a great
MIDDLE SCHOOL SRC TRAINING DAY
By Laura Richardson (8K )
On Friday 9 March the SRC gathered for a Training Day with Mrs Honor. We learnt how to understand people and this
was very helpful in what we are aiming to achieve this year. We also did a number of exercises to strengthen our team
work. Everyone bonded quickly and we all got to know each other in a new and exciting way. Here is a summary of our
thoughts:
We learnt how:
Conflict resolution and communication styles can help us through situations - Adrienne Poulos 7D
To agree and disagree without hurting people’s feelings - Kobe Shannon 6S
To be creative when making decisions -Ashleigh Flanagan 8T
To show someone that you understand what they are telling you - Samantha Payne 6K
To listen well to people’s ideas and suggestions - Brennan Sortwell 6S
To respond when someone comes to us if they have a complaint - Kimberley Chung 8M
To cooperate with other students and how our ideas can be fabulous when put together - Kevin Xie 7C
Our goals for this year include:
Listen to other peoples’ ideas – they might be better than my own - Laura Richardson 8K
Be patient with people and not butt in during discussion - Vourneen Canning 7D
Encourage all students from my class to share their ideas without being shy - Ashleigh Ford 8T
To listen more actively and help others express their ideas - Ben Mich 7C
Contribute ideas actively and not wait to be asked - Patrick Newman 6K
Show respect in even the smallest of items - Rachel Sherwen 8M
Speak up more when someone challenges my ideas - Isabella De Rieve 7L
Representing my class with pride - Kobe Shannon 6S
Speak and listen more - Jessica Anderson 8T
Overall, it was a great day full of learning, laughter and we all feel ready to represent our peers well.
Middle School
Some say that the best way to learn is to be “hands-on”! Well, Year 6 was lucky enough to learn “hands-on” when we
had Medieval Day! Everyone dressed up as people from the Middle Ages. There were kings, queens, knights, barons,
earls and a stack of peasants (just like Medieval times).
Firstly, we had a joust with scooters and pool noodles as our horses and lances, and cricket pads and hockey
helmets ar our armour. Then we had a custard tart eating competition - sounds pretty boring doesn’t it?
However, this wasn’t any normal custard tart eating competition, We had been planning this event for
decades(actually, a few weeks) because in this particular competition, we had to eat with our hands
behind our backs. Many tried but inevitably some failed. However, some were victorious!
To top it off, we had two Medieval experts visit, bringing with them chainmail, armour, helmets and
swords! They told us how a Medieval court worked and who was it it. Then we chose someone to be
humiliated in the stocks and we chopped off his head.
Overall, the day was thrilling, exciting, fun and adventurous and taught us a heap about
Medieval Society.
Joshua Madden 6k
Medieval Day was a fun, exciting day full
of wonderful learning experiences. The day
consisted of jousting, a custard tart eating
competition and a presentation about medieval
life. We all learnt a lot on the day about the
king’s court, knights and guards and some
more on the feudal system. My highlight was
the presentation. It was funny and educational
and was a great learning experience. The
entertainment and learning made the day
definitely worthwhile.
Isabella Pfahlert 6S
On Tuesday the 20th March we had Medieval
Day. We participated in some awesome
activities such as jousting, a custard tart
eating competition and a Middle Ages Show.
My favourite part of the day was the Medieval
Show. The two guest speakers were really
funny as they explained the different roles of
the people in the court. I really enjoyed trying
on some of the knight’s armour, especially the
chain mail.
Middle School
This year's Maths Challenge Camp took place at Elanora
Heights Conference Centre.
The students who attended were Thomas Eveleigh, Joshua
Madden, Lachlan Fraser and Matthew Winfred.
Everyone was put into groups named after four famous
mathematicians: Fibonacci, Pascal, Escher and Plato.
We learned about each of them and, in doing so, we
developed two very important mathematical skills:
problem solving and finding patterns.
One of highlights was when we made a huge dome out
of metre-long sticks and joiners. It was the size of a traffic
round-about! The key for completing the dome was
teamwork. We were given a smaller version to guide us as
to which stick to put where. It was hard to stop it collapsing
but we did it in the end after a whole hour's work.
The camp was a unique and unforgettable three days!
By Thomas Eveleigh, Matthew Winfred and Lachlan Fraser.
YEAR 7 Visit Taronga Zoo
On Thursday of Week 7 the whole of Year 7 went on an excursion to the Zoo! We piled
onto a bus at 8 o’clock and headed off to the other side of Sydney.
At the Zoo we went into a classroom. We saw and patted the cutest ringtail possums in
the world, and a two headed lizard. Then we broke off into small groups and headed off
to the giraffes – their tongues were so long and blue!
After that we headed towards the birds and quokkas (wallaby like animals). When we
were in their enclosure we sat on a rock and completed our work! As we were leaving a
bunch of quokkas started circling us, and honestly it was a bit scary.
We also got to see elephants, chimps, a bear, and some reptiles, then it was time to head
back to school but not before we bought an ice-cream and got a free drink bottle!
From Caroline Edwards (7C)
Quokka
When we arrived at the Zoo we were given a booklet of fun activities which took us on
a tour around the Zoo and the numerous exhibits. We learnt numerous facts about the
animals, like a giraffe tongue is about half a metre long and blue! We also learnt that frogs
absorb moisture through their skin.
We saw many, many, animals, but one of my favourites was an animal called a Star
Tortoise. It was a tiny tortoise with a fascinating pattern on it’s shell.
Star Tortoise
Going to the Zoo was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about animals in a fun
environment.
team. A big congratulations to them both.
Well done to all who attended.
TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY
Wet weather was a huge issue for our two touch football
teams. They were a committed group who trialed and
trained really well and would have been competitive if
the gala day had gone ahead. Instead of a regular gala
day the zone made it a trial to make a zone team that
travelled to Tamworth on the 22-23 March for the CSSA
State Gala day.
Three boys were selected into the South Met zone team.
Daniel Robinson and Alex Ilievski in the Open team and
Harrison McKeon in the under 15 team.
We had a great day for the cross country which was held on Friday 16 March. The weather was great and the students
CONGRATULATIONS to Ashleigh Flanagan and Joanna
Stavrou Year 11, 2012.
Ashleigh and Joanna made it to the font page of the Leader last week
when they received a Governor General’s award for a surf rescue they were
involved in in late 2010. This award is in addition to the Principal’s Award and
an award from our State Member of Parliament they received just after the
event.
Prior to the incident, the girls had been on a three day “Learn to Surf”
camp as a part of “Participating with Safety” and “Lifestyle, Leisure and
Recreation” units taught in the Physical Activity and Sports Studies course in
Year 9.
They had also completed a four week Surf Safety and Rescue course prior to
attending the camp.
National Athletics Successes
Michael is a member of the NSW U15s Athletics Squad. This year
the Australian Junior Athletics Championships were held at Sydney
Olympic Park from the 14 - 18 March. Michael competed in the 100m
and the 200m sprints. He had some outstanding successes, receiving
a bronze medal for 3rd place in the 100m sprint and coming 4th in the
200m sprint. This makes him the overall 3rd fastest U15s sprinter in the
country.
We wish to congratulate Michael on these great achievements and
look forward to seeing him compete in the future.
Senior School
UNIFORM
When did you last read the School’s full uniform requirements? Are you clear on the rules about hair, jewellery, makeup, bags
and sport shoes? Have you read the addendum in the Student Diary about particular Senior School requirements? Are you up
to date with changes?
HAIR - Students’ hair should be clean and well groomed, with a conservative cut and style. Extreme hair styles are not
acceptable. For girls shoulder length hair must be tied back with approved accessories, as stated in the uniform lists. Hair
colour must be the student’s natural colour.
To avoid misunderstandings or embarrassment for boys, this means that a hairstyle is NOT permitted if it is:
• “stepped" (has clearly defined shaved sections)
• coloured
• of a length which extends past the collar
• has "pony" or "rat" tail
• is shorter than a "No. 2"
• so wild and untidy as to invite comment
JEWELLERY - Girls’ earrings MUST be one set of plain gold or silver studs or sleepers (hoops are to be no larger than 1.5cm in
diameter, face of earring no larger than 0.5cm in diameter) worn with ONE in each earlobe only. No other jewellery allowed.
Boys ARE NOT permitted to wear ANY type of earring or other jewellery.
MAKEUP & NAILS - Students ARE NOT permitted to wear makeup, nail polish or acrylic nails.
SCHOOL BAGS - In the Senior School, with the issue of the laptops, a new specialised charcoal grey backpack with
protective rainshield and laptop pocket was authorised. Alternately, students may continue the older style blue school bag in
conjunction with a protective laptop case approved by the School’s IT Department.
On excursions, sporting events and out of school activities, the lightweight School Sports bag may be used instead of the
larger blue schoolbag or the grey backpack. However, no other bags are approved for use.
SPORTS SHOES MUST be a supportive type and MAINLY WHITE.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR SENIOR SCHOOL DIARIES
Students MUST NOT have TATTOOS or FACIAL PIERCINGS
Female students MUST ensure that skirt hemlines touch the floor when kneeling
Male students MUST be clean shaven
These are examples of supportive, MAINLY WHITE, sports shoes
APPROPRIATE for a range of sports activities at school sport and PE
These shoes DO NOT offer sufficient support and are NOT APPROVED for
use at school sport or PE
These are not MAINLY WHITE and are therefore NOT APPROVED
