30 Years in the Making
30th Anniversary
This year will see initiatives
of earlier years come to
fruition. In this edition
of Redeemer Record we
celebrate 30 years of
Redeemer in the making,
together with ongoing
developments.
As the first semester has unfolded we have begun to modestly
celebrate Redeemer’s 30th birthday. Many former and
existing students, parents and staff can be very proud of the
wonderful school community that they have helped build
over three decades. At Redeemer’s annual celebrations, such
as Grandparents Day, we have been giving due attention
to this milestone, and the practice of acknowledging the
service of many in developing and growing Redeemer is being
acknowledged throughout the year. Later in the year we will
also take the opportunity to produce a ‘whole of school photo’
as was produced for the 25th Anniversary.
Junior School Development
After approximately five years in the planning, during the
second week of Term 1, a select group of Junior School classes
moved into permanent facilities on the Junior School site for the
first time in the college’s history. I refer to the Year 5 classes in
the Multi-Purpose Centre (MPC). Additionally, Outside School
Hours Care (OSHC) was also able to move into their permanent
facilities early in the same week. This is a significant milestone
well worth giving thanks for.
Parents and Friends Association
Redeemer has always been blessed with a supportive and very
hardworking P & F. There is no doubt that parent volunteers
operating in support of a school are an enhancing characteristic
of excellent schools and to that end Redeemer is equal to the
very best school communities this nation has to offer. I cannot
thank enough the parents who give tirelessly and endlessly to
the college. While tangible and measurable examples of parental
contributions are given in this Redeemer Record, there are
numerous other contributions that are as equally important,
but without public profile.
Term 1 in review saw much to thank the P & F for. I refer to
upgrades at the pool which included new competition standard
starting blocks, hot water in the change rooms and the visually
stunning resurfacing of the pool deck with a soft-fall compound
found around many public and school pools these days.
Additionally, the P & F through their ‘Grants Application Officer’
have been able to provide shade umbrellas and tables and seats
to both the pool and Junior School.
Signage
Term 1 also saw stage 1 implementation of new signage across
the college, with all rooms in the Middle and Senior Schools
having new room number signs installed. In due course the
Junior School will likewise be signposted following the new
alpha-numeric system.
Stage 2 of the signage project will see new signs erected at
the Rochedale Road entrances, as well as prominent buildings
like the Kleinschmidt Centre. Our implementation goal for the
Rochedale Road signs is for the second half of this year, when
these three new signs are in place they will dramatically enhance
the face of the college on Rochedale Road.
Stage 3 of the project is planned to include directional signage
throughout the college.
Staff Changes
Mr Michael Kleidon’s departure during Term 1 follows in the
footsteps of other distinguished Redeemer old scholars who like
him have returned to serve their alma mater as employees and
then have moved on due to promotion. Mr Kleidon joins Mr Tim
Kotzur (Principal of St Andrews Lutheran College, Tallebudgera)
as a Redeemer old scholar who has progressed to principalship,
something the community should be very proud of.
Mr Mark Rasi (another Redeemer old scholar) officially stepped in
to the Acting Head of Senior School role as of Monday 8 March.
It is with thanks that Redeemer has been blessed with someone
as capable as Mr Rasi and who has such strong links to the college.
Mr Rasi’s former role as Curriculum Leader for Health and
Physical Education is being filled by Miss Meg Sippel who will
act in this role for the duration of Mr Rasi filling the Acting Head
of Senior School position.
During Term 2, Mr and Mrs Vickers enjoyed Long Service Leave;
Mrs Sandra Vickers’ teaching load was covered internally, while
Mr Bruce Vickers’ Curriculum Leader role of Science was filled by
Mr Themi Georgiou.
The Middle School welcomed Mrs Kathy Stock into the role of
Acting Head of Middle School from week 3 of Term 2, when
Mrs Judy Powell went on Long Service Leave. Upon her return,
Mrs Powell will become the Acting Deputy Principal at the start
of Semester 2 while Miss Frieberg is on Sabbatical and Long
Service Leave through to the end of this year.
College Council Leadership
The College Council of Redeemer, like the P & F, is one of those
bodies staffed by volunteers.
With Mr Col Vietheer’s retirement from the role of Chair at the
end of last year, Mr Ross Warbrooke was elected as the seventh
College Council Chair. Ross Warbrooke attains the position of
Chair following a decade of service to Redeemer’s Council with,
God willing, many more years to come. Ross Warbrooke is a
parent of the College and a highly respected, active member of
the Lutheran Church.
Welcome Hub
Redeemer’s wonderful Chapel has served the college and Our
Saviour Lutheran Church for a decade. The Chapel is not only a
spiritual focal point for both communities, it is a highly utilised
facility for mass gatherings of all kinds and to this end it is one
of the college’s greatest assets. In partnership with Our Saviour
Lutheran Church, Redeemer is seeking to enhance the Chapel’s
serviceability so that its benefit to both communities, in the
future will be outstanding as it has been in the past decade.
This project is about providing better catering and amenities, this
project will substantially benefit the youth ministries of both Our
Saviour Lutheran Church and the college. It will likewise benefit
Redeemer’s promotional and community building programs such as
Grandparents Days and Awareness Day, to name but two of many.
Our Saviour Lutheran Church will oversee an appeal for this project
and take responsibility for any construction loan that may be
required. We look forward to this development and the blessings
that it will add to the Redeemer – Our Saviour partnership.
Our Changing Educational Paradigm
In the last twelve months government initiatives have brought
tremendous blessing to Redeemer, specifically the Multi-Purpose
Centre and the School Pride projects.
As indicated in the media, government initiatives in education at
both the State and Federal levels continue to be rolled out at a
revolutionary pace. With Australian Curriculum (formally National
Curriculum) upon us as well as the Kindergarten and Year 7 in
to High School initiatives, Redeemer’s curriculum planners and
managers are being kept very busy. These developments, as in
all Queensland schools, will have a major impact on the college
in the next few years, and Redeemer will embrace these changes
as necessary.
Redeemer however must remain true to its educational values and
to this end through this period of rapid change we will continue to
endeavour to deliver the curriculum using processes that embrace
the individuality of each student, while challenging them to reach
as high as they are able with the talents that they have been
blessed with, always to the service of others as modelled by Christ.
Mr David Radke
Principal
Unless God Builds It...
For 30 years Redeemer has been well
served by its building and grounds.
We today enjoy an extremely beautiful
and pleasant campus. This year we are
adding to the buildings again. Buildings
exist to support communities and not
communities to serve buildings. We see
this in two of the new buildings this
year. The Multi-Purpose Centre provides
another large meeting space, as well
as undercover area, sporting venue and meeting place for the
community. The new ‘Welcome Hub’ addition to the Chapel
is also designed to increase the facility of Redeemer’s most
distinctive building. It adds the room and facilities to support
the community gathering around the events of the chapel.
Both of these additions to our landscape however will only be
the place of community, they will not be community itself.
They can support and enable the life that we will share
together, but they cannot create it.
Of course, Redeemer does not lack for healthy community.
Redeemer has a reputation for a strong caring and supportive
ethos. We strive to be a place where all can find a place and
experience support, along with excellent teaching. But even
more, as a Christian school, Redeemer recognises that we need
more than good buildings, or even good human community
or skilled education. To really achieve what we desire, we need
the presence of God. Psalm 127 says, “Unless the Lord builds
the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Without the divine
grace, we cannot be what we want to be. Indeed the best of
human community only comes from the presence of God and
a people who live out the character of God.
“
Redeemer has a reputation for a strong
caring and supportive ethos. We strive to
be a place where all can find a place and
experience support, along with excellent
teaching.
”
King David wanted to build a ‘house’ for the Lord, but God told
him that he would rather build a ‘house’ (the Hebrew word also
means ‘household’) for David. David wanted a building for God,
but God wanted to create a community for David. In this 30th year
of Redeemer we continue to pray that God will build a community
for us. For the last 10 years the chapel has helped us to put God
at the centre of life here at Redeemer. If our dreams are realised,
the Welcome Hub will serve his mission among us, God will
continue to build us as a community with himself at the centre.
God bless
Staff Profiles
Ms Hannah Richter
Junior School, Year 5 Teacher
I graduated from Redeemer Lutheran
College in 2005, and God definitely
answered my prayers when I was given
the opportunity to come back and teach
in the Junior School as a Year 5 teacher.
I am truly humbled by the overwhelming
support and compassion from staff.
Before graduating from Griffith University, I have spent my
schooling in numerous Lutheran Schools and having a father
as a Lutheran Pastor, I was immersed in the ‘Lutheran culture’.
I have learnt the importance of strong Christian values, role
models and compassion. As a teacher I want to provide my
students with the opportunity to learn and share parts of my
own faith with my students.
In my personal life, I cherish my time spent with family and
friends. I love anything to do with art, crafts and creativity and
love exposing my students to this. It is always good fun trying
to find new challenges in this area. I also love getting outdoors
and exploring in rainforests and going to the beach with friends.
And when I get the time, putting my feet up and reading a book
or watching a movie are some of life’s greatest pleasures.
This year has brought many rewarding experiences from really
getting to know my students as wonderful individuals to seeing
their faces light up when they finally understand something
they have struggled with. It truly has been gratifying and very
entertaining at times! I look forward to all the new and exciting
experiences Redeemer has to offer.
Mr Frank Ford
Middle School Teacher
I was born at Warrnambool on the south
west Victorian coast and never expected
I would be spending the final years of my
teaching career at Redeemer Lutheran
College in Queensland. For many years
I held senior administrative positions in
a number of Victorian government and
independent secondary schools. About eight
years ago, my life suddenly changed. I met and married Narelle
Bowden, a past teacher from Redeemer who taught at this
college for 21 years.
Narelle works as an Overseas program Coordinator for Australian
Lutheran World Service. After several years of marriage, she took
me on trips to Mozambique and Cambodia. Five years ago we
went to PNG and stayed for three years, while Narelle managed
a number of ALWS projects in this country. During these three
years I was the Curriculum Coordinator at Coronation College,
Lae – an International High School. When we returned to
Australia last year, I spent a term working at Redeemer as a
supply teacher and this year received a permanent appointment
as an English and SOSE teacher in Years 8-10.
I enjoy teaching in the Christian environment at Redeemer
College. As a Catholic, I believe my faith as received a new
dimension through my daily experiences in a Lutheran
environment. One of my main activities outside of teaching is
my involvement with St Vincent de Paul Society and its many
outreach projects to those in need. I am looking forward in the
future to assisting with musical productions at Redeemer and am
currently involved with inter-school debating. My other interests
are my family and friends, gardening and reading. My students
will tell you that I have a passionate interest in the Collingwood
AFL team.
Mr Adrian Ford
Senior School, Wilson House Leader
I was born in England and moved to
Melbourne with my family when I was
six. After completing primary school my
family and I moved up to Brisbane for my
dad’s work for 6 months. This has been
the longest 6 months of my life as I am still
in Brisbane! I attended St Peters Lutheran
College for all of my high school years and
after graduating I began studying a Bachelor of Behavioural
Studies. After a year of that I realised that my passion was
really in education and working with young people. I had some
fantastic teachers as I went through school and it was because
of the time and effort that they put into me that caused me to
want to become a teacher.
I have a passion for seeing young people realise their potential
and encouraging them in all areas of their lives. During my
university studies I worked back at St Peters in the boarding
house and then moved into a teaching position at the
completion of my studies. I have taught in senior, middle and
junior schooling and have enjoyed all areas. I especially like
working with senior students.
In my personal life I am married to Emily and we have two
young boys, Josh (3) and Timmy (1). In my spare time I love
playing with the boys, playing volleyball and I am involved at
my church in the worship team and youth events.
Semester 1 Events
Particular highlights so far
this year have been:
Our Year 5s moved into their newly
built classrooms at the end of January.
This brought about great excitement for
both staff and students.
Our Saviour congregation kindly presented
each one of our Prep students with their
own Bible in February. This initiative of Our Saviour Lutheran
Church occurs each year and our Prep students delight in reading
and enjoying the pictures from their own Bible.
In March we saw both our Years 4 and 5 students depart for
camp. Year 4s attended Bestbrook Mountain Resort which allowed
students to participate in farm type activities whilst Year 5s
attended Camp Currimundi, a camp focusing on beach skills. For
some students, these camps were the first time away from home.
Celebrating and remembering ANZAC Day in April was particularly
special this year with Troopers Philip Mostert and Tom Dawson
from the Lockyer Light Horse Troop (2nd Regiment ALH) attending
a unique ANZAC service.
Our regular Mother’s Day stall was held in May and as usual our
Senior School students studying Early Childhood played a major
role in wrapping, pricing, and even making goods to supplement
the donated items. The Prep students also did a pamper session
for their Mum which involved a hand massage, filing nails and
applying nail polish. This was a memorable event!
The theme for our annual Under Eights Day, also held in
May, was “Living Diversity – Act Locally – Think Globally”.
The events and activities enabled our young students to
experience the many diverse elements of their environment,
as well as, tolerance of others and respect for all people in their
communities and their world.
It seems as though each semester is busier than the last,
however, in the Junior School we continue and endeavour
to provide opportunities for the students to learn, engage,
socialise, build community and have fun!
Middle School News
Middle School Camps
Our camping program provided an
exciting start to the year for our Year 6
and Year 8 students. Year 8 converged
on Luther Heights at Coolum Beach in
mid-February and came back a couple
of days later having made new friends,
enjoyed new experiences and stretched
themselves with initiative tasks, physical
activities, brain teasers and theatre sports.
Fortunately the rain eased enough for Year 6s to go to Camp
North Pine, although the dam was so full (amazing!) that the
canoeing activity could not be safely done. Despite this minor
setback, the Year 6 students came home bubbling with stories
and news about their camp.
Our Year 7 students are eagerly anticipating their trip to
Canberra in July.
Interhouse Carnivals
Interhouse Carnivals for Swimming and Cross Country were held
in Term 1. We witnessed some outstanding personal efforts and
I applaud the success of these students. While there were a few
outstanding swimmers and athletes, the majority of students who
participated in these carnivals were not place-winning champions.
They were kids who were willing to have a go and give their very
best effort in each event. I salute these students who participated
with such energy and enthusiasm, and whose efforts encouraged
great House spirit. Mansfield proved to be the strongest House this
year, winning both carnivals. Lavarack, Wilson and Ramsay will be
making a huge effort next year to rob Mansfield of their position.
Middle School Staff News
There are two new, or
at least newish, faces in
Middle School this year.
At the beginning of
2010 we welcomed
Mr Frank Ford as a
teacher of English
and SOSE and also as
a Year 8 Home Group teacher. Mr Ford has recently taught in
Papua New Guinea, so Redeemer is something of a change for
him. (See the Staff Profile on page 4). Also working in Middle
School this year is Mrs Kathy Stock, who was formerly in our
Junior School. Mrs Stock was Assistant Head of Middle School
from January and from late April is the Acting Head of Middle
School. Head of Middle School, Mrs Judy Powell, disappeared
temporarily on Long Service Leave during Term 2 and will
reappear in Semester 2 as Acting Deputy Principal of the
College when Miss Rosilyn Frieberg takes her Long Service Leave.
Senior School News
Senior School Staff News
Friday 5 March was
Mr Michael Kleidon’s
last day at Redeemer
after being the Head
of Senior School for
the past two years.
Mr Kleidon leaves
us to take up the
position as Principal
of Luther College in Melbourne from the start of Term 2.
He follows in the footsteps of other distinguished Redeemer
old scholars who have returned to serve their alma mater as
employees and he joins Mr Tim Kotzur (Principal of St Andrews
Lutheran College, Tallebudgera) as a Redeemer old scholar
who has progressed to Lutheran principalship, something the
community should be very proud of.
Mr Mark Rasi, another Redeemer old scholar, officially stepped in
to the Acting Head of Senior School role on Monday 8 March.
It is with thanks that Redeemer has been blessed with someone
as capable as Mr Rasi and who has such strong links to the college.
Japan Tour 2010
Pavement Art
The theme for the 2010 Redeemer Lutheran College Interhouse
Chalk Art Competition, “Off Your Block” was inspired by the
tradition of Japanese wood block printing. Each of the four
Houses entered three teams of four students. Many of these
teams reflected the vertical house ethos and were made up of
a mixture of students from Years 9 to 12.
It was a tough challenge to judge the winning work and the
scores were very close. 1st Place: Ramsay (pictured),
2nd Place: Lavarack, 3rd Place: Wilson, 4th Place: Mansfield.
Shave for a Cure
Eleven Redeemer Japanese students and two staff members
departed for Japan on Saturday 27 March. This was a beautiful
time of the year to be in Japan as the cherry blossoms were just
coming into full bloom providing us with a spectacular display of
pink and white.
We all spent the first four nights with host families from our
Sister School Shibakashi. This time provided the students with
an invaluable insight into everyday Japanese life as they were
blessed with opportunities to experience things such as sleeping
on a real futon, eating a variety of local home cooked food,
and using a Japanese style bath.
Some of the tour highlights were: witnessing the drastic change
in pace between the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and the quiet
and calm of Takayama; learning about the devastation that
happened in Hiroshima; challenging the Tokyo subway system.
We were also lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji
from the Shinkansen (bullet train) as it sped past at over 300
kilometres per hour.
It was a wonderful two weeks for all involved and a privilege for
RLC staff to be given the opportunity to show Japan to 11 students
who were perfect ambassadors of Redeemer Lutheran College.
‘Shave for a Cure’ is the Community Service Committee’s biggest
event of the year and is certainly one of the most fun fundraising
events held in the Redeemer community! This year it was held
on Wednesday 26 May. A grand total of $3,000 (and counting)
was raised this year (up from $1,200 last year!), with all money
raised donated to the Leukaemia Foundation to assist in the
search to find a cure for cancer.
Swimming Carnival
The 13th Annual Senior School
Swimming Carnival was held at
Aqualogan Aquatic Centre on Friday
5 February 2010. Congratulations
to all of the students in the winning
house, Lavarack for your efforts and
participation!
Student Leadership 2010
From the College Captains...
This year signifies Redeemer’s 30th year of providing high
quality Lutheran education. It is a time of celebration of our past
achievements and a time to build on the foundations set by
former students and teachers. Redeemer has grown from a small
school of 56 Year 8 students in 1980 to a vibrant community of
1,102 students across three sub-schools and thirteen year levels.
As the College Captains of 2010, we hope to lead the college
into the new decade by being strong role models for other
students and upholding the school ethos of Christian values.
This year we would particularly like to focus on fostering
closer relationships between the sub-schools. We aim to do
this by informally spending time with the younger students at
lunchtimes, by attending and leading devotions and attending
assemblies. We hope that through our actions, we can share
God’s message and provide strong Christian leadership.
As student leaders, we pray that we can fulfil our roles to the
best of our ability while believing in the school motto:
‘Our Hope is in Christ’.
College Council News
Introducing Mr Ross Warbrooke
Presently Redeemer’s Council
is made up of nine members:
With Mr Col Vietheer’s retirement from
the role of Chair at the end of last year,
Mr Ross Warbrooke was elected as the
seventh College Council Chair at the
first meeting of 2010. Ross Warbrooke
attains the position of Chair following 14
years of service to Redeemer’s Council
with, God willing, many more years to
come. Ross Warbrooke is a parent of the
College and a highly respected, active
member of the Lutheran Church.
Ross Warbrooke (Chair), Andrew Spyropoulos (Vice-Chair),
Sarah Dixon (Secretary), Elaine Forster, Margit Hubbers,
Michael Hoopmann, Darren Pope, Caroline Ryan, Robin Stelzer.
The College Council meets monthly. The Council is also served
by two sub-committees, Finance Committee and Building
Grounds and Technology Committee, who also meet monthly.
The role of the College Council is to provide governance to
Redeemer Lutheran College ensuring it is well managed, well led
and suitably resourced. As with all Lutheran schools, the College
Council is answerable to the Lutheran Church of Australia,
Queensland District.
Former Chairs of College Council
over the past 30 years have included:
Ian Kelly (1980-1982), Darryl Glover (June-December 1982),
Don Gowanlock (1983-1986), Owen Scholl (1996-2000),
David Spann (2001-2006) and Colin Vietheer (2007-2009).
We are very thankful for the support and commitment of
College Council, ensuring that Redeemer continues as a
Christ-centred school, providing the highest standard of
education possible in a genuine, caring environment.
Interview with Dick Smith
Five students from Redeemer Lutheran College had the opportunity
Grandparents Day 2010
What a grand community we have become! On Thursday 22
and Friday 23 April, the Redeemer community celebrated our
Grandparents and Special Friends. Grandparents Day 2010 saw
a record number of Grandmas, Nannas, Grandpas, Pops, Aunties
and Uncles come to school to experience a piece of Redeemer
through the eyes of their grandchildren.
As our Junior School and college community continue to grow,
so too have the number of our Grandparents!
Prior to our Junior School in 2006, we averaged around 250 visitors
each year for Grandparents Day. This year, our numbers over the
two days peaked at just under 800 special visitors to our college!
Grandparents came from as far as Tasmania and we even had
international guests fly in from California, USA! It was the final
Grandparents Day for our Year 12 families, with many attending
each year that their grandchildren have been at Redeemer.
Many of the grandparents really look forward to being able to
spend this special time with their grandchildren.
Our Junior School Grandparents and Special Friends were
treated to an impressive Junior School concert on
Thursday morning where each of the classes presented an
item in Redeemer Chapel. On Friday, we started with a special
Music Concert where our special visitors were also treated to
performances by the Intermediate String Ensemble, College
Choristers, Voiceworx, Senior Singers and the Intermediate
Concert Band. Our Years 11 and 12 Hospitality students and
staff are to be commended for an enormous task of preparing
and providing enough morning tea for our 800 visitors over
the two days.
Building a Future
Multi-Purpose Centre
In our 30th year at Redeemer, the college has seen the
completion of our largest facility since Redeemer Chapel
was built 10 years ago.
This facility, our Multi-Purpose Centre (MPC) is situated
between the Junior School campus and Middle School
campus facing Rochedale Road. The building houses
three Year 5 classrooms and our Outside School Hours
Care centre (OSHC) which moved into the building at the
commencement of the 2010 school year.
The remainder of the building which has been funded
by the Federal Government’s ‘Building the Education
Revolution’ (BER) is in the final stages of construction and
includes a multi-purpose stage, a hall which incorporates
a full size basketball court, amenities, canteen and sports
storage. We look forward to the use of this state of the art
facility from the commencement of Term 3, 2010.
We also rejoice at the progress of the Junior School car
park and associated work on Rochedale Road as this work
is a prerequisite to the commencement of Stage 1 for our
Junior School permanent building program.
Building a Future
Welcome Hub Appeal
In 2010 Our Saviour Lutheran Church will help Redeemer
to ensure that the College continues to be a place of
welcome and community. We all want a place wide
enough for our ever-growing student and family
population, as well as those involved over the last 30 years.
Our Saviour Lutheran Church, partnering with Redeemer
Lutheran College, is launching an appeal to help the College
by providing an upgrade to Redeemer Chapel. There are
special benefits for the College which are beyond present
College building capacity.
The Our Saviour plan to upgrade the Redeemer College
entry area has been named the ‘Welcome Hub’. It is
inspired as much by future opportunity as present need.
The Welcome Hub plan will extend the existing Chapel
kitchen (three times the current size), provide a toilet block
(four female, three male), build a storeroom for outdoor
furniture, and give a large covered area from the new
kitchen to the College Administration building.
The Chapel was opened 10 years ago with room to seat
the whole College at that time. Its function has grown.
It is now not only a worship place; it is the entry way to
the College grounds and the meeting place for all who
come and go, or stay for events. But the Chapel facilities
are inadequate for this. It has almost no toilet amenities,
a very limited kitchen, and inadequate shelter for
outdoor community life.
This new ‘Hub’ will effectively lift the Chapel amenities
and shelter so that several hundred can be involved at
the Chapel entrance, with food service, band space, PA,
projection screens and toilet facilities. The kitchen will suit
as a coffee shop. The sheltered areas will provide shade
and shelter for hundreds of students or others, including
lunch time activities, arrival/departure traffic, plus a
‘stop, sit and talk over coffee’ zone for parents.
We commend this project to you.
Lutheran Schools Week
Lutheran schools across the nation celebrated
their contribution to the education of
Australians, since 1839 during Lutheran
Schools Week, held 3-7 May 2010.
At Redeemer, for the most part, celebrations were low-key,
centring around reflective Chapel devotions, with thanksgiving and
appreciation the central themes. In contrast to events at Redeemer,
the peak bodies, namely Lutheran Education Australia (LEA) and
Lutheran Education Queensland (LEQ) conducted their annual
celebrations which include formal recognition of achievements by
students, staff and school communities as a whole.
As with recent years, Redeemer was the recipient of a number
of LEQ awards. Three of our students received Art awards with
Ashleigh Bentley (Year 12) receiving the Senior Art Award and
Madeleine Nicol (Year 11) and Katie Hewitt (Year 6) receiving Highly
Commended Awards. Additionally, Redeemer as a community
received a ‘Highly Commended in the TT Reuther Award for school
excellence’ in the category of School Congregation relationship.
The citation celebrates recognition for the wonderful way in
which Redeemer and Our Saviour Lutheran Church work closely
together for child and youth activities, modelling service to others
as a Christian community.
TT Reuther Award 2010
Highly Commended
Citation: Redeemer Lutheran College
has established and nurtured a special
relationship with Our Saviour Lutheran
Church over an extended period of time
that serves as a model for all schools that are
co-located with a local congregation.
The college is not unique in having a Lutheran congregation
calling the school Chapel its spiritual home. What is unique is
the level of interaction between the two institutions, the quality
of that interaction, and the equality of the partnership between
the congregation and the school. Just as unique is the steadily,
continuing growth of the relationship that manifests itself in
new ambitious programs coming to fruition each year.
Those within the Lutheran Church and its schools are very
aware of the need for a close relationship between the two
institutions. Invariably, congregations see ‘their’ school as part
of their mission and ministry, and the schools are ever mindful
of the governance relationship between the two. Both of these
viewpoints are borne out of one owning the other, if not literally
then at least historically. At Redeemer Lutheran College, Church
is at school and students are in Church. This is seen in the
everyday life of the school where both school and Church
are committed to seeing a need, and then serving that need.
This has led to a vibrant, young, growing congregation and a
school that feels part of, and cared for, by the Church.
Some of the ways in which this harmonious and productive
relationship is seen at work include the sharing of facilities and
resources, shared promotion of the activities of each, shared
Pastor with a special focus on youth ministry, regular informal
meetings of the leaders, a playgroup, and shared preaching.
The Sunday Night Live (SNL) fortnightly youth service is a major
event which draws youth from as far south as the Gold Coast
and Redcliffe in the north. This event is promoted by the school,
involves current students in the music and liturgical dance and
still draws past students from the school back to the school to
be a part of a church family.
Redeemer and Our Saviour have every right to be proud of
their relationship and have much to teach fellow schools and
congregations of the way to nurture a shared ministry in the
service to God.
As a school Redeemer has much to be proud of and thankful
for: in the context of the Christian faith we give thanks for that;
in the day to day context we give thanks to the many staff,
students and parents who commit themselves daily to making
Redeemer a wonderful school.
Chinese Ministry at RLC
On Sunday 25 April, the Our Saviour congregation in partnership
with Redeemer, congregation celebrated a big new step in its life
and service to the Redeemer community. At the start of the year
we adopted a Chinese congregation as part of Our Saviour and
on 25 April, its pastor, Pastor Elwin Lai was ordained into the
ministry of the Lutheran Church of Australia.
Pastor Elwin has led churches and missions in Malaysia before
coming to Brisbane and serving a church here for several years.
He is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. He initially
studied theology in Hong Kong and Chicago. (The Lutheran
Church even plans to use him in theological training of others.)
But most of all, he is well known for his deep personal faith,
his love for people and his willingness to sacrifice for the sake
of the work of Christ. We are blessed to have such a gifted man
as part of the team at Our Saviour.
Pastor Elwin is establishing a Chinese speaking congregation here
at Redeemer College with Chinese-language services held every
Sunday in the Kleinschmidt Centre. (9.15am Cantonese, 11.00am
Mandarin.) The success of his endeavours are already seen in the
six baptisms and confirmation that we also celebrated on Sunday.
Our Saviour congregation has always served the Redeemer
community. My position being part-time shared with the
College, and our Senior Pastor, Robin Stelzer, and Counsellor,
Kerry Groch, are available for those who need help, but now we
can also offer the services of Pastor Elwin to those who would
like pastoral care in Chinese language.
We are excited about this new endeavour for our school and
congregation, and pray God’s blessings for Pastor Elwin.
Hitting the High Notes!
2010 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year for Performance
Music at Redeemer. Already this year, we have seen our talented
musicians provide the College with many reasons to be proud;
the music program is bursting with excitement.
Some highlights from the year so far:
Chamber Strings won their heat in the Queensland Youth Music
Awards with an exceptional score of 92 out of 100. Overall,
they placed 2nd in this prestigious event. Undeniably, this is an
astonishing achievement at such an early stage of the year and
cements Redeemer’s Chamber Strings as one of the finest string
ensembles in the state.
Students in Junior Choir, College Choristers, Voiceworx and Middle
School Flute Choir filled two buses and headed off on a ‘Road Trip’
to Tall Trees Tanah Merah and The Plains Retirement Village. The
day of performances was greatly appreciated and warmly received
by those very special, elderly members of our society.
The first of Redeemer’s Concert Series for 2010 saw performances
from Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band and
the 40-piece Queensland Wind Orchestra under the baton of
Mr David Law. There was, quite literally, standing room only as
QWO wowed audiences with an impressive program including
music from Star Wars and an extraordinary trombone solo from
Redeemer’s Senior Concert Band conductor, Mr Stuart Bent.
It was a memorable evening.
Finally, an amazing group of 56 students from Year 5 have
taken up the opportunity to learn a band instrument. Certainly,
they have made an astounding start to the beginning of their
musical journey and it is wonderful to see so many of them take
up the opportunity to also be part of the Junior Concert Band.
Junior String Ensemble is also bigger than ever with 22 students
rehearsing each Monday morning. Take a moment to imagine
what Redeemer Music in 2017 could look and sound like. There
are many great moments ahead.
Redeemer’s Concert Series continued on 27 May featuring Senior
School and Middle School vocal ensembles, string orchestras
and our talented Music Extension students. This concert did not
disappoint and was also a terrific event.
A reminder that the Redeemer Concert Series is not just for music
students and their families; these concerts are an opportunity
for the wider Redeemer community to enjoy a night of inspiring
music making.
I look forward to the College community’s ongoing support of
our fine music program.
Habits of Mind
Traditional schooling based on a largely academic curriculum
simply cannot provide what is needed if it is only about blindly
doing. Doing without understanding is sterile. It leads to thinking
that is mechanically correct but patently wrong. I believe a
challenge for us here at RLC is to make sure we are not ‘blindly
doing’. To address this issue the College has commenced the
introduction of Habits of Mind in the curriculum.
The habits work on the premise that ‘all kids can learn, but not on
the same day and not in the same way.’ They do not displace the
agreed upon standards of learning developed and adopted by the
school. Rather, course content serves as a vehicle and provides an
opportunity for learning Habits of Mind. In addition they provide
a common terminology for communication by all members of the
school community: parents, teachers, administrators and students.
They provide a shared vision of the attributes and characteristics
of students completing schooling at the College.
The first steps in introducing the Habits of Mind to RLC are
already in place, with all staff attending module one of a
professional development series designed to assists schools
before and during implementation. From here we have selected
a group of teachers across the three sub schools that have been
working on mechanisms and processes to ensure a whole school
approach to the integration of the Habits of Mind. The first in a
series of parent information evenings was also held on 27 April
in the Multi-Media Theatre.
In the midst of the great debate about the quality of education,
the relevance of teacher performance cannot be underestimated.
A recent report by McKinsey (2007) concluded that:
“The available evidence suggests that the main driver of the
variation in student learning at school is the quality of the
teachers...(and)...the quality of an education system cannot exceed
the quality of its teachers...The top performing systems recognise
that the only way to improve outcomes is to improve instruction...”
Through the introduction of Habits of Mind I hope it is evident
that we are putting in place measures to continue teacher
development and support improved pedagogy. This aim will
always be at the heart of any development occurring at the
school, now and in the future.
Class of 2009 Excels
Redeemer Lutheran College is extremely proud of the OP
(overall position) results received by the class of 2009 late last
year. These results not only reflect the hard work of the students
but are also a testament to the school’s policy of encouraging
students to undertake a program of learning that best suits each
individual. The professionalism of the staff, who focus on high
academic standards while developing the whole person, and
commitment of the QCS preparation team were key ingredients
in the success of the class of 2009.
Ultimately, however, academic success occurs when individual
students utilise all resources on offer and strive to achieve to
their full potential. It is safe to say that the class of 2009 did this,
deservedly producing some of the best exit results the College
has ever seen. As the figures below show, not only did we
achieve a high number of OP1 scores, but excellent results were
attained across the entire year group. These fantastic results
follow on from the class of 2008’s outstanding performance –
further evidence of the College’s commitment to a range of
educational pathways tailored to suit the individual and the
support structures in place that guide each student during their
time at Redeemer.
Congratulations to the class of 2009 on their outstanding OP
results. This diverse group of students are an excellent example
for our current cohort, showing what commitment and a good
work ethic can achieve. As a community we should celebrate
and thank the teachers whose dedication and care have been
important elements in our students’ success. We are very proud
of the class of 2009. Well done!
Parents Provide
As parents we are very used to providing the best we can for
our children. They receive the best of us. Our children have first
dibs on our love and find new and interesting ways to empty our
wallets... and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
It therefore seems logical that the parents of the Parents and
Friends Association keep doing what parents do, providing
facilities and resources for the benefit of all our children here
at Redeemer. As we celebrate the 30th birthday of the college,
we can look back with enormous satisfaction at the valuable
contribution this willing band of volunteers has made to this
community over such a long time.
In recent times, the P & F has completed a major refurbishment of
the Tuckshop which has been of considerable benefit to all who use
the service. The refurbishment of the pool area has been a major
improvement with the remainder of the project to be completed
this year. Apart from the new starting blocks, hot water and soft fall
around the deck area, shade and seating will soon be installed.
The arrival of the shade and seating for the Junior School is from
a successful grant application. These grants, and many more in
the future, have been facilitated by the P & F Grants Officer.
The P & F have bravely invested funds into this position in order to
have the best opportunity of success with these grant applications.
2010 will be about finalising the Pool project and brainstorming
ideas for community events the P & F can sponsor as well as
working through which projects we can concentrate on in the
next few years.
It is a privilege for me to be amongst people who truly value the
role of the P & F in the life of our Redeemer community. They are
people who are willing to participate in a myriad of ways so that
together we can make a substantial contribution to the college
now and into the future.
THE OFFICIAL OPENING
“The opening service in February had been an important low key event. The official opening on
13 April was to be different. The premier of Queensland, Mr Joh Bjelke Peterson, accepted the
invitation to perform the opening, and Pastor Reinhard Mayer, the President of the Lutheran Church
of Australia Queensland District, dedicated the college and the first building to the Glory of God.
The Commonwealth Minister for Education had been invited, and was Senator Neville Bonner. Pastor
Mayer in his address reminded the new school community that the focus of the school was always
to be on the care of the individual students, on their spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and
physical needs, rather than on the needs and success of the school as an institution.”
