6. The computer
In 1985 one of my twelfth grade students at the Sacramento Waldorf
School told me he could not hand in his assignment because the computer
had erased it. I told him, “I’ve heard every excuse possible about why students
could not hand in their work; ‘It was in my jean’s pocket that was put
in the washing machine.’ ‘My cat urinated on it.’ And so on. But this is the
first time I’m hearing an excuse based on the computer. This is a watershed.”
The advent of the computer has affected life on every level – on
science, research, communication, social relationships, political communication,
as well as influencing thinking itself.
