THE INAUGURAL GLOBAL EMERGING MARKETS SUMMIT 2008<br />

The Global Emerging Markets Summit 2008 was co-organized by ASLI and Perception<br />

Management International Sdn Bhd (PMI). The idea was mooted in October 2007 by<br />

PMI and crystallized with a Memorandum of Understanding signed between both<br />

organizations as founding partners and sponsors. It was agreed that should the project<br />

succeed, it would be institutionalized for the long term. Part of the agenda was to tap into<br />

the growing importance of the global emerging market in the context of the changing<br />

international economic order. GEMS made its debut in London from August 5-6 and<br />

the response was positive.<br />

At the Opening Ceremony, the Opening Address was delivered by Sir John Stuttard,<br />

Lord Mayor Locum Tenens, and followed by the Keynote Address on “The Role of<br />

Tourism in the Branding & Development of Emerging Markets” delivered by the<br />

Honourable Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, Minister of Tourism, Malaysia.<br />

Among the key topics in the programme were Global Economic Challenges & Emerging<br />

Markets: The Rise of China and East Asia, BRIC & Mortar - Real Estate Potential in<br />

Emerging Markets, Africa Beyond Aid -The Time Has Come, Relooking ASEAN - Has<br />

Southeast Asia Regained its Shine, Energy & Infrastructure in the Middle-East and<br />

Investing in Emerging Markets - Managing Risks, Maximising Returns.<br />

GEMS 08 featured 20 international speakers from 10 countries - Ghana, Malaysia,<br />

the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Hong Kong, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brussels,<br />

South Africa. Among the distinguished speakers were Mr. Ronnie Chan, Chairman,<br />

Hang Lung Properties, Hong Kong; Mr. Stephen Perry, Chairman, The 48 Group Club,<br />
