The 5th National Utilities Summit was held on 14th and 15th October 2008<br />

at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur with a theme this year on “Plowing Through<br />

the New World Order - Towards Greener Developments, Greater Efficiency<br />

& Synergy”. Dato Shaziman Abu Mansor, Minister of Water, Energy and<br />

Communications, officiated the Opening Ceremony and delivered the Opening<br />

Keynote Address at this National Summit.<br />

This unique annual summit was categorized into three main sectors of the<br />

national utilities industries: namely, water industry, energy industry and<br />

telecommunication and ICT sector. The summit started off with the first<br />

session: CEO Roundtable on ‘Overcoming Challenges & Moving Towards<br />

Efficiency’ that focused its discussion on industry update and recent changes<br />

in the national utilities industry, impact of recent political changes on the<br />

national policy & its implementation, key challenges in the national utilities<br />

industry moving forward, growth opportunities and sustainability in the utilities<br />

industry and overseas expansion opportunities. Key panelists who spoke<br />

at the roundtable discussion were Dato’ Pian Bin Sukro, Chairman, Energy<br />

Commission; Dato’ Teo Yen Hua, CEO, National Water Services Industry<br />

(SPAN); Dato’ Sri Che Khalib bin Mohamad Noh, President/Chief Executive<br />

Officer, Tenaga Nasional Bhd; and Datuk (Dr) Ir. Mohd Annas Mohd Nor,<br />

Special Advisor - International Business, Genting Sanyen Sdn Bhd & Former<br />

Chairman, Energy Commission.<br />

For the water industry, the key topics of discussion were integrated water<br />

resource management, sewerage sector under SPAN and greenhouse<br />

effects and sewage management - zero waste management. For the energy<br />

industry, key issues were deliberated at the roundtable discussion on ‘New<br />

World Energy Order - An Inevitable Change?’ For telecommunication<br />

sectors, the discussion took on an open forum style on ‘Pricing and Quality<br />

in Telecommunication Services’ and followed by respective presentation of<br />

thoughts on ‘Rolling Out Broadband in Malaysia’.<br />
