2. Foreword by the
Research Institute Director
Psychology research continues to advance steadily
and is particularly well placed to score well in terms
of research impact in the new REF exercise. Our
research activity is both interdisciplinary and highly
applied with excellent examples of influence on
policy and practice. A good example here is the
proactive contributions that Ulster psychologists
have made to Assembly policy consultations over the
past year. Particular mention here must go to Tony
Cassidy and the members of the new NIBPS Health
Psychology division who have responded to numerous
new Assembly health initiatives. A listing of these
consultation responses can be found at:
Excellent progress has made in building links between academics and both
policymakers and end-users of research. These include contributions by Christine
Liddell to the area of Fuel Poverty; Gillian Robinson’s ESRC funded work through
ARK which provides an ideal format for research dissemination and Mickey
Keenan’s work with parents and children in the area of Autism.
Our postgraduate activity also continues to grow, with large numbers of full
and part-time postgraduates on our Magee and Coleraine campuses being
complemented by research led master’s programmes. These include applied
masters in Behavioural Analysis; Careers Guidance; Mental Health along with
a new programme in Health Psychology being planned for a 2010 start. It is
particularly pleasing to see this growth in postgraduate research activity, which is
a key underpinning feature of our research enterprise.
On the Magee campus recent developments have centred on the Mental Health
area with strengths in methodology, international collaborations and strong local
relationships with Trusts and the Trauma Centre all indicative of real progress.
Excellent synergies between postgraduate course provision and research group
strengths provide a sound platform for future growth. A new honorary professor
in Mental Health (Gerry Leavey from the Northern Ireland Association of Mental
Health) has been appointed to further strengthen this area and we eagerly await
new initiatives by the MRC the R&D Office and the University which will further
build on this area of research excellence.
As universities are being asked increasing searching questions about their roles
and future directions, Psychology at Ulster is well placed to help address these
through its applied regional and international research activities.
Professor Maurice Stringer
Director of Psychology Research Institute
