Performing Arts The Willow Pattern Nothing beats the thrill of standing backstage, madly running lines like there’s no tomorrow, striding on stage towards the spotlight, sweat pouring down your face and then finally uttering your first lines. I think this was how all of us felt on the Willow Pattern’s opening night: panicked, anxious and eager to make our directors – Mr. Huxtable, Ms. Glisson and Mr. Eades – proud. Upon hearing that I would play Knoon-She, a Chinese princess, in the school production, I was thrilled. My character is in a forbidden relationship with her father’s secretary, she’s set to marry a silent warrior, and she dies at the end of the play. A challenge. Early rehearsals were spent working on using animal traits (from the Chinese Zodiac) as part of our characters - I was the tiger, fierce and ferocious. Costumes were traditional hanfu robes and huge, anime style wigs. This concept extended into UV cloth and makeup to complement the Black Light Theatre techniques, a crazy mix that really added to the story and fun. The Willow Pattern was quirky, amusing, clever and entertaining. And now when I see a plate with the blue and white willow pattern on it, I feel like it’s something special - that we share a special connection. - Olivia Jones 8KK Being part of the Black Light Theatre ensemble was a truly magical experience. In Black Light Theatre anything is possible. The aim is to create a world in which your imagination can flow and one where the audience can be amazed. This is a really specific theatre style - I had to wear a black lycra suit, head to toe, which took a while to get used to. The fabric created a dark shade, and when the theatre was pitch black you really couldn’t see much at all. But every time I was on stage my senses seemed to come alive. I could find my way on stage instinctively, even carrying drinks, a basket or rope. One of my most treasured experiences is the rush you get backstage, when you can hear the murmur of the crowd, when the actors whisper a last minute ‘good luck’ and you step on stage to create a moment for the audience to remember. On the nights of the production, in my head, I would go through what needed to happen and where I needed to be. Performing Arts Barnyard Hullabaloo The Early Years put on a delightful Summer Concert this term. “Barnyard Huallaballo” was based on a farm animal story inspired by the children’s book Cock-a-doodle-doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo! by Giles Andrae and David Wojtowycz. The children performed wonderfully, with superb singing, marvellous moves, delightful dances and colourful costumes, all of which thrilled the audience. Thanks to Musical Director Ms. Hategan and her team of creative, enthusiastic and energetic teachers. -Ms. Pyper, Reception Swans DUCKS Mandarin Soirée The Year 1 and 2 DUCKS Mandarin Soirée in May provided a wonderful opportunity for the many children who love learning Mandarin, practise regularly and enjoy sharing all that they have learnt. The evening kicked off with an introduction and welcome from Mrs. Woodward. An impressive acrobatic performance started the show, followed by songs, poems, dances and drama. The children all performed very well, and won an enthusiastic round of applause from a very impressed audience.
